Sony is bleeding money - business strategy discussion

I wasn't really blaming them. But it is yet another massive cost to write off.
Nah, they'll have insurance against things like this. Not specifically North Korean hackers but events which precipitate a film not being released due to factors outside of their control, force majeure etc.

Not sure. That's one hell of an insurance claim to prove.

Are the threats of actual terrorist attacks even realistic? I mean, should every tv show, film, book, play, speech that gets threatened be shut down just in case?

I find the whole thing so absurd. An investigation resulted in the US thinking that the hackers were North Korean but it's not 100% sure. So ultimately there's a chance that all this panic is due to a couple genius kids playing around in their bedroom while mum is making them pancakes.
Now THAT would be funny.
The US loves the panic and the drama.

The movie was removed from theatres not because Sony or the theatres found the threat to be credible. They removed the movie because they believe that enough movie goers might find the threat to be credible and avoid the theatres over the holidays. Thereby lowering revenue for movies across the board and hurting their business.

But they're basically not going to release it at all. DVD or video on demand, as far as I know. Seems like they've caved to a terrorist threat that may not even be real.

No one knows. Sony pulled the movie because basically the biggest theatres weren't going to show it. Sony is probably trying decide what to do going forward. It has several options. A delayed release, straight to DVD/VOD or cancelling it outright. Its not a decision that has to be made right now.

It has been reported globally and USG are investigating. Looks a slam dunk. What are there insurance company going to say? They've not heard about it ;)

Does the insurance include terrorist attacks ?

From what I understand there are 4 or 5 sony movies that were leaked / effected by this. So depending on insurance policys it may not be good for sony.

I know there was no attack. But a hack isn't the same thing as a threat either. There are two aspects to this story. 1) A hack. 2) A threat. Hence :
They got hacked. That's it.
Is wrong. That's not it. To be accurate you'd have needed to post :
I hate that people are calling this a terrorist attack. There were just threats and probably unfounded. They got hacked.
:p

You can get insurance for anything and it doesn't need to specifically list terrorist attack, just set out the circumstances in which the policy pays. There are all sorts of things that can result in a movie not being completed or released.

Individuals are used to having standard policies, companies generally have bespoke insurance specific to their businesses.

I still don't think they will lose money on this. Sorry but I just don't believe that they will shelve this movie entirely, more likely that they will cower in the corner until things die down and then release it to bluray and online streaming. If anything there will be more people wanting to watch this movie now than before.

Right but what insurance company will cover Sony itself pulling the film ? The film is complete and ready to release at any time they want so an insurance company will argue that there is nothing to cover the film is complete.

News flash : Films are not a very profitable business at the best of times. So for a major studio film not to get released at the box office pretty much guarantee's it will incur a loss

Lloyds of London. This group of insurers insure wars. They insure anything. They are famed for insuring anything.
