Sony is bleeding money - business strategy discussion

With MS effectively axing Nokia, who's going to be making wonderful Win 10 handsets as part of MS's new push for Windows? There must be some phone manufacturers on board.

Microsoft is still going to release at least 6 Lumia handsets per year (compared to approx 15+ midrange/low-end models this year). The two first being the high-end Lumia 950 and 950XL in October and an another rumored Intel powered one in Q1/Q2 2016 (in addition to 3 or 4 mid-range models in 2016).

The entire top ten is using a sony sensor, and every single xperia Z have placed in the top three during their launch period. Nokia is long gone. They made one phone with a great camera in 2012.

There's little room for improvement when everyone is using the same sensor in the high end, other than a brute force expensive and bulky phone.
Anyone who has ever used any of these phones will tell you that the Nokia 808 and 1020 still shoot the best pictures (with the 808 edging the 1020). the Mobile DXOmark is BS at best.

Sony exmor rs sensors also have horrible colorful noise in them. Sony keep refining their software thought.

What I learned is to nrvrt use device with the first exmor rs.

The new Z rumored to use new 22MP sensor. I wonder will Sony can release properly this time.

About lumia 1020 quality. It is a lot better in indoor than xperia z something, I think z2. At least that's what I get when trying them on phone stores.

But 1020 is super slow for each shot.

Lumia phones also have 'refocus' that works really well, even on unsupported phone. Completely on another level compared to Sony 'defocus'.

The weird thing is, if you use Google camera instead of Sony's camera app, the quality is similar but the camera become much faster. Only tested this on xperia sp, xperia m4, xperia z2.

There's also problem with quality of same Sony sensor across different phone brand. This is very apparent in lots of Chinese phone with Sony IMX something sensor.

Tried on xiaomi something vs other Chinese phone I can't remember the brand at all. The camera response, the focus, the quality is really different.

Did Sony did not give standard camera firmware? Or their standard firmware is so bad, thus only expert developer can truly extract the best quality? Because they focused on making the camera sensor hardware and letting their clients to provide the software.

Yeah, some apps are better than others. There's Camera FV-5 that supports android 5.0 raw api, but only the nexus line is fully compliant so far. The next galaxy or z shoud support it, that will open the doors to universal raw editing instead of relying on the phone manufacturer driver (and not having access to the raw).

DXOmarks seem to have a correct methodology. The 808 had a very impressive low-light performance, but as I said the compromise is a 17mm thick phone. Brute force. Big sensor. Thick phone. I don't see this as a good idea for Sony. They could make a phone with a very slim F2.8 fixed lens using the 1"-class sensor used in the RX100, and that would add up to maybe 25mm thick for a DSLR-like performance... but I can't see this as a market worth pursuing.

Sony just announced their midrange phones. The new M5 is practically flagship performance at midrange price, it's almost the same as the Z3+ even with an IMX230 (but mediatek chipset instead of the overheating qualcomm). It will really cannibalize the Z series, unless the upcoming Z is a true redesign.

Maybe phone makers could start using better quality materials for their lenses instead of plastic. That way, higher performance optics could be had without needing to sacrifice thickness (to a certain extent anyway of course...)

They're probably focusing on the Tokyo game show, which MS are skipping this year.

Or maybe they all realised all these shows are a bit too expensive and releasing news and trailers online, and basically keep doing their jobs, is the way to go?

They still have a major floor area at gamescom. They said their european conference have been moved from gamescom to the Paris Games Week event. And obviously there's TGS very soon.

the company has rescheduled its international media briefing for October 27th during Paris Games Week, an annual event launched in 2010 by French game industry trade group SELL that has since grown to be one of the largest (in terms of number of attendees) game-focused trade shows in the world.

Speculating wildly, one reason they might wait until october would be to announce a price drop, and the new PS4 revision should be out worldwide around that time. To hell with profit! Market share is king!

Or they need to wait until then to announce a price point and/or release date of Morpheus?

It is the biggest booth of Gamescom and they have PSX too with TGS and PGW.

No press conference. A conference is a waste of time if they have nothing more to say since E3.

Yeah, Gamescom is very close to E3 this year. They moved the pressconf to Paris Games Week [which is after TGS], but they will have massive showfloor presence at Gamescom [as usual].

I see no issue, Sony continues with "4 big pressconf events" per year - one event for each big market [US, EU, Japan] and then end of the year celebration @ PSX.

sony now use borderlrss display, 21.5MP camera for midrange phones. but my beloved led stripe on Xperia SP still have no successor.

In PGW we will see true demonstration of Dreams, Wild sure about this I have good sources and probably Quantic Dreams games(not sure need to ask maybe PSX but I doubt it), Rime, other european indies games. I think in PSX they will show Sony Bend and Sucker Punch games. This is why Yoshida tease journalist with Quantic Dreams, Sony Bend and Sucker Punch games, they will have first demo in 2015.

In TGS we will see more Japan studios games and 3rd party japanese games.

Edit: Maybe at PSX we will see a new GT (rumoured GT sport?)

I think the point of phone cameras is convenience and ease in producing things like panoramas, HDRs, time-lapse video, stabilized video, etc.

And putting fun filters on them and sharing them right from the phone.

If you want to process RAWs, get a proper camera.

People expect the PQ of phone cameras to be about the level of those old disposable cameras people bought at tourist shops, or those Kodak Instamatics, which probably produced millions of memorable photos.
