Sony Invention Beams Sights, Sounds Into Brain

I believe Edward Nygma already holds most of the patents related to this technology.
aye , he does indeed . To bad he is crazy and broke and can't sue them

A Sony Electronics spokeswoman told the magazine that no experiments had been conducted, and that the patent "was based on an inspiration that this may someday be the direction that technology will take us."

SONY is really desparate in trying to make future money.

I guess they learned something from Immersion... ;)

Mehhh...
Everyone know that the real way to do "VR" (or matrix or watchamacallit) is via a datajack. Anything else is kinda.. nono... think of the bandwidth needed.. ;)

MS and Bayer should joint venture to design pills that make you think you're an inter-galactic warrior fighting evil aliens through the cosmos.

This patent system is sooooo screwed-up!

SONY just patented a technology that they DON'T HAVE, and that THEY ARE NOT DEVELOPING, just because they think it has a future, so when developers DO DEVELOP it, then they will profit. How stupid is that?!!! Who the hell is going to spend millions developing such technology, just so that SONY can get their hands on it?!

Stupid patent system! Very stupid! :devilish:

Ummm... I don´t think this would be succesfull, do you imagine a system failure as in that film - i don´t remember the name but it could be "Demond seed"-in which a man died having a continous orgasm ?

Errmm is patenting ideas a new term to you? Or does the fact that we just happened to have stumbled upon Sony doing it switches an alarm bell in your brain?
It's been done for years, not sure what the problem is.

I know this is nothing new. The patenting system is stupid, and it has been stupid for years! It has to change.

Are you really saying that you find nothing wrong in some idiot patenting an idea that they have no way of implementing just to profit from the hard work of others?

As soon as a patent system works to deter technological advancement, instead of promoting it, you have to seriously start revaluating it.

What u on about?!
Someone will come up with a technology based on this idea and they will patent that so they can profit from the technology! It's much easier to sue people over patented technologies (see Immersion) than on "ideas". Simply because it's much easier to change wording in "ideas" patents than changing technology descriptions and blueprints, like it happened with the Immersion case. They patented a technology, Sony used the same technology, and they had to pay.
Yes the system is crap, but what can u do...

Does anyone remember the Sega patent for "idea of texture mapping"? It's not like everyone now is paying royalties to Sega because they patented the idea of "texture mapping"...

Yes the system is crap, but what can u do...

I can't do shit. But the people who can, should really try to change it, otherwise, it's inevitable that the system will loose so much credibility, that some countries and corporations may simply start to disregard it altogether.

Not really, Immersion actually had a working technology to patent. Now I haven't looked at the patent myself but Alejux seems to be saying that Sony are trying to patent an idea only. Without any knowledge of how to actually make such an idea work. If thats actually true then I agree with Alejux that its patently :))) ridiculous. Because if any company actually produced technology like this they would then have to pay Sony royalties for something Sony didn't even invent.. Although I'm suspicious of how this can possibly to true, surely the patent system can't be this screwed up!

Don't worry guys.. Someone can extend the idea and patent that..

If not, this will expire in 20 years as far as I know. And without starting any experiments right now, I do not think they have something working in the next 20 years.

The patent system has some issues, no doubt there - but as far as fixes, I think we're just going to have to live with it for awhile. In the end, it helps do a lot more good than bad in terms of innovation; though the way some pharma companies have been conducting themselves lately I think has left a bad taste in a lot of peoples mouths.

As for countries eventually ignoring, it's ironically the opposite, where some of the countries that currently ignore patents beginnign more and more to enforce them. Requirements of WTO membership and all. ;)

No something like that would be thrown out of court if it ever got nasty.

Whoever is the first to come up with a technology that maybe is based on this idea, will be able to patent said technology. No one will have to pay Sony unless Sony patented a technology that was then found to be copied.

It's as if i patented the "idea of sticking a big spike in your brain through a plug so that you can connect to a computer directly to the brain" and demanded royalties from the Wackosky (sp?) Brothers for using something like that in the Matrix movies.

The Patent one linked to above actually describes a method. If you create a machine that works the way this atent describes, you've infringed it. The patent doesn't just say 'We patent the idea of beaming senses into a brain' but describes HOW to do it. Therefore it's legit. Anyone's free to patent an alternative way that doesn't use ultrasonic stimulation across the cortex.

BTW : Whenever I visit the USPTO, images never show - just the usual placeholder. Do you have to be a registered member or something to view the pictures?
