Sony Home - The official thread*

Shame I cannot stand Criss Angel. Still, and as wise old slider prophecised decades ago, good to see more and more presences from outside of gaming in Home.

Rolly Polly "Music Cafe" in Playstation Home, Japan:
http://rolly.jp.sonystyle.com/motion/special/sp12.jsp#motionplayer

A waste of time for me since I wrote off Rolly as gimmicky, but heck, at least they are using the platform to market their product.

Problem is it's for show only (non-interactive). Playstation Home should be an interactive marketing platform.

If they want to explore toy robots, they should look at integration with PS3 (e.g., robots + PS Eye + new controller + Cell), or at least integration with PSN. A standalone, single-function robot like the Rolly experience is so 80s.

EDIT: Sony's Automatic Photographer is another product that could benefit from better integration with PS3:

It has built-in support for motion detection, smile detection and face detection.

EU getting MotorStorm "stuff" and Gamescom Presentation Podium

EU Home Update: http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2009...entation-podium-opens-its-doors-for-gamescom/

we have some very special race costumes coming to you straight from MotorStorm Pacific Rift. These new outfits will be available in Home Threads…

...

This space will be accessible for a very limited time only (so be quick!). By entering the MotorStorm Sphere you will secure yourself a rare PS Home Reward and the opportunity to see the very first work in progress artwork of a new MotorStorm Space (which will be coming to PS Home later in the year).
[Looking good ! Video in the link]

...

Next up, we have the Presentation Podium section of the PlayStation Events Space re-opening its doors – this time hosting content from the forthcoming gamescom event in Cologne, Germany.

...

Finally, make sure you check out the Shopping Centre, there’s been a lovely little apparel update for MySoti, Home Threads and the V-Store.

US getting Bat Cave and MotorStorm sneakpeek also

They seem to be syncing their update now:
http://blog.us.playstation.com/2009...ace-and-tons-more-coming-to-playstation-home/

we’ve worked with the fine folk over at Eidos to ensure that their next release integrates tightly with our platform. Those of you who scoop up the highly-anticipated Batman: Arkham Asylum for your PLAYSTATION 3s next week will be pleased to see that the game unlocks a special Batcave Outpost personal space. It’s safe to say that hardcore Batman fans are going to seriously spazz out when they unlock Bruce Wayne’s secondary lair under Arkham

we will be launching a new game-themed event space specifically to host our MotorStorm: Pacific Rift game launching parties, set to occur every Monday night between 6pm and 10pm PT. This space, which marks the first ever “Globe of Death” to publish in Home, will showcase some rad MotorStorm footage and will serve as a hub for all of you racing fanatics in the Home community to meet and launch into games of MotorStorm: Pacific Rift. This event space will be released in conjunction with a bunch of awesome MotorStorm clothes and will only be up for a limited time

Many core areas of Home will see content updates this week, with new tunes being loaded into the Listen@Home kiosk, new clothes and furniture appearing in the Mall (including animated furniture – this stuff has to be seen to be believed!), and some new videos screening in the Theater. One of these videos, scheduled to go live on Sunday the 16th, is part of the ongoing Criss Angel: Mindfreak event.

Now, cue complains about redownloading updated spaces. :)

Really ? I vaguely recall I could start several background download one after another.

EDIT: They NEED to make that Batmobile drivable Home so that more people can see them, and buy the damn game.

You can, but he probably means click one option that says "download all new content". And in fact, I wouldn't mind having an option that downloads all new content automatically in the background when I log in.

That's hardly a solution. . .really, why aren't these spaces added to the store as a single *free* downloadable pack? This whole loading screen for a loading screen business in home is way out of hand, especially with all the sub-loading in each area.

The other thing is what is with the apparent lack of caching of space tiles for the location browser? The last time I checked out Home (to snag the coffin couch) every time I went to the map screen it was anywhere from 30 to 60 seconds for the map tiles to actually load, presumably because it was bandwidth choked due to some video downloading in the background for one of the movie screens.

I think it is time for Sony to launch a new "Facepalm" space since that is what most people spend their time doing there anyway.

=)

Cheers

I don't have a problem with that. It has the download in background option under a simple button shortcut, and it alerts you when it's ready and you can immediately go there at that point with two simple button presses.

Yes, this lack of tile caching is one of the bigger flaws. It's not THAT hard to implement background caching for these things.

This I don't agree with. Did you try the Fat Princess event space for instance? It's very nice. The EA spaces are also pretty good, especially the poker. I also enjoyed the shooting games in Resistance and inFamous spaces (as well as the phonenumber minigame in inFamous), etc. I look forward to sixaxis support in Home, hopefully it won't be too long although there's a chance they'll postpone it until PMSC, which would be a shame in my eyes, because the minigames style suit even the current sixaxis I think.

This. But what I meant was highlighting the space icon on the world map, activating the menu and select a download space option. As it stands, you attempt to access the space to activate the download and when you select background download, you are exited out of the world map back into your current space, only to repeat the same process again.

The problem there is that a "download" does not encompass a reasonable amount of content. Most of the newer spaces have multiple sections and often the foyer has no purpose other than to include entrances to other sub-spaces. When you are having to deal with the tedious download menu and subsequent loading screen for a measly 7MB sub-space that simply leads you to another download prompt, something is terribly wrong with your design. It is like having an FTP program that forces you to click a "yes I want the damn thing" prompt for every single file in a recursive download.

=)

This whole sub-space download business is silly, like does anyone enter one of these spaces without checking out the whole thing? What exactly is the benefit of breaking them up? Forcing the user to wait by advertising panes while the next space gets download?

Cheers

Some sort of delta streaming would be great.

And yes, Home Spaces are still too thin in value/features. They should focus more and more on the interactive items. I'd hate to see the Worldmap grow too big. Come now, let's see a drivable Batmobile (with honk, weapons and knock-down physics) in Home. We are *supposed* to be excited about cool things, not complaining about the tedium of downloading.

Lots of new stuff happening. Apparently if you have the new Batman, just booting it up will unlock the new Batcave apartment for you in Home. There's apparently also some very cool animated furniture coming (first time I thought about that is when I thought about getting a transformer miniature as a reward in Home, would be cool if it is exactly something like that ;) ). There's a limited time Motorstorm space which if you visit it also unlocks something, not sure what, Motorstorm Game Launching parties, clothes ...

I think Home is reaching critical mass, pretty good stuff.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2009...ace-and-tons-more-coming-to-playstation-home/

Close, but not yet. Not yet ~~~

I believe Home will not reach its full potential without the following elements:

* Downplay Home Spaces. More emphasis on interactive items. Best is if the items/NPCs can move around and interact with people (like the NPC here: http://forum.beyond3d.com/showpost.php?p=1313490&postcount=1226 but more interactive)

* User generated content and activities (perhaps in some areas only). Upgrade the Clubhouse.

* Continue to improve UI and assorted usability issues.

The tight integration between Bat Cave and the Batman game is cool though. They earned full score there ^_^

Critical mass as in something that receives enough developer support to ensure it will stay for the duration of the generation, with a large enough returning userbase.

The kind of critical mass you're talking about is the kind that would get the majority of gamers on board I think, and I agree we're not quite there yet.

The animated furnitures were shown in the Official Home forum. Here's a summary in GAF:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=17101722&postcount=3474

It's not unlike the animated shirts they showed:

EDIT: Arwin... following from your comment about developer support, someone from GAF made this activity list for US Home:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=17103390&postcount=3493

Buzz Game (rewards)
Burn Zombie Burn Game (w/ rewards)
Siren Game (w/ rewards)
EA Poker (w/ rewards)
EA Racing (w/ rewards)
EA Golf (w/ rewards)
EA Club DJ (w/ rewards)
Guitar Hero game
Resistance 2 Turret FPS (w/ rewards)
Bowling
Pool
Uncharted Arcade
Echochrome Arcade (w/ rewards)
Ice Breaker Arcade (w/ rewards)
Train Arcade (w/ rewards)
Xi (w/ rewards)
Saucer Pop
Infamous Lightning Game (w/ rewards)
Infamous Graffiti
FarCry 2 Mancala

He forgot Red Bull Air Race. The list is a little deceiving because Xi alone has what... 7-8 mini-games ? It's the best production in Home to date.

My favorite is the Buzz! Space/game. I was told the upcoming MotorStorm 2 space has a functioning jukebox.

My biggest disappointment are the Loot Stage and the Photo Frame. The concepts were great, but not well thought through. The released item was too limiting.

 You forgot about the ghost characters. It will mask all character accessory loading.

The animated furnitures will simply pop in and I supposed cut-off your knees if you're in the way :devilish:

Wow, that animated furniture looks amazing, even when it's not moving! :D

Yeah, I noticed the jukebox in the (good looking) Motorstorm 2 space, very nice. Hope you can get something like that for your apartment someday. The muddy Home jeans are also nice (you get them as a reward for visiting). I also checked out the new event space, and it has a new type of bubble style machine that shoots out 2D playstation button symbols, very stylish and good looking. The movie players also seem to have been upgraded with a different buffering counter that seems faster too. There was a Home reel running on the big screen showing off some of the spaces and some upcoming spaces. It reminded me that Burn Zombie Burn space actually has animated zombies walking around, so what you thought about earlier is already possible. It also has a minimgame with similar zombies trying to grab you while you navigate a kind of maze.
