FTC investigation seems to be starting.

The Federal Trade Commission has opened an in-depth investigation of Sony’s proposed $3.6 billion takeover of Bungie, the gaming studio behind Destiny and Halo, according to people familiar with the matter. While the FTC may not be able to block the deal, its decision to review it is the latest example of how aggressive the agency is becoming in reviewing mergers.

Waste of tax payer dollars.

The FTC will investigate Sony's Bungie acquisition | Digital Trends
The FTC’s main concern about Sony’s acquisition of Bungie is about whether or not it will make its games exclusive to the PlayStation platform, especially on the new PS Plus subscription service, once the deal closes. It looks to explore whether or not such exclusivity would impede competition with rival companies, such as Microsoft and Nintendo. Jim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, made it clear in a blog post published the same day the company announced the merger that Bungie will retain its status as an independent and multiplatform game studio and publisher even after the deal closes. Bungie even hinted that the reason for the merger is to expand its entertainment prospects outside of games.

A search on Google and 5 minutes will tell you that Bungie is too small to be worried over. Bungie has release 2 games under the same IP in the last 10 years. Destiny going exclusive is hardly going to significantly impact the market in any negative way.

Waste of tax payer dollars.

Given the timeframes that some are predicting, this does seem a wacky amount of time. If Sony are definitely not planning to make Destiny exclusive to PlayStation then Sony should be amendable to committing to that legally. I assume the FTC have such powers, just like the EU, UK and other market regulators have.

What is there is "investigate"? Is somebody rifling throws Sony's bins for tossed-out printed emails from Jim Ryan saying it's all a ruse? :-?

US law really is like a bad reality TV show, I wonder what will be in next week's episode!

Sony laying more focus on mobile ;)

Edit: why does this news get so much backlash and negativity? Gaming on phones is bigger than any other gaming market….
Good to see where resources are going with the price increases

Er.....for similar reasons Konami got a lot a backlash maybe?
Maybe you have Sony shares and you expect some good dividends from mobile gaming profits?

Savage doesn't make high-budget AAAA Naughty Dog Console/PC games and mobile is not for gaming!!!11

Why acquire Savage when you can get Square, Ember Labs etc!

Sony could make superb TloU, GoW etc. mobile games and people would still complain.

It's a matter of what they can afford. It's like asking why anyone shops at Walmart instead of boutique shops. Why they buy house brands instead of name brands.

This is a good thing for Sony, to expand into mobile gaming. More consumers are on mobile than are on consoles. You have higher potential reach.

Sony is clearly expanding onto more platforms, to pc and mobile. Its the only way for them to survive in the future, console is the smallest market, they cant just cling on to just them.

It's not about the size of Bungie, it's about the size of Sony.
And not just Sony's size. Sony make the games that a lot of people plat, the consoles and TVs they play them on, and they control the distribution of music, TV and movie studios that are or can be used in games. Sony are well placed to make really aggressive moves in the entertainment sector. The baffling is reason is why they really are rubbish at leveraging all of these things.

Exactly , I get that MS is a huge company. But doesn't Sony control like 70% of the music industry ? They also have movie studios and then they own Funimation and Crunchyroll. They are also according to MS the 2nd biggest game company that is big enough without bungie and the latest purchase today to dwarf a combined MS+ activision

Mobile gaming is significantly larger in Japan and the rest of Asia than any other form of gaming. Even the NSW is dwarfed by mobile gaming in Japan. PS5 is basically a joke in Japan compared to mobile gaming and XBS doesn't even warrant an honorable mention compared to mobile gaming.

Sony are basically attempting to stay relevant in Japan and the rest of Asia. This acquisition wasn't about making fans happy, it was about boosting their profitability and increasing shareholder confidence ... especially in their region of the world and more importantly in Japan.

Yeah we understand why Sony cares. Why do YOU care though?

Well, i do own mobile devices, sony expanding there means we could see AA or even AAA games on atleast tablets, maybe even mobile phones. Apple A and latest snapdragons are quite capable today, more so in the future.
Its good to see them expanding beyond their plastic box in the living room.

Question is, why are you offended by Sony going into the mobile gaming market? Ive seen plenty reacting in anger on the twitters comments. There must be a valid reason.
