Sony Game Studios Acquisitions [2022]

The difference between $10 a month live and $15 a month Gamepass Ultimate is $5, or (12*$5) $60 a year.
Oh I understood the math but you seem to suggest that Gamepass Ultimate is just $60, which it is not. It's $60 more than Live but the Total price of Gamepass Ultimate is $180 ($15*12).

I paid 3*55Euro for 3 years Live and changed it to 3 years Game Pass Ultimate for 1Euro. Sure, the deal might change in the future but that is what you can get it now. Even at full price with the games MS has and will add to gamepass it is a good deal for a lot players. Outside of UBI/Bungie/Take2 content there aren't that many multi platform AAA not on gamepass now/soon(activision).
Oh sure, going from XBox Gold to XBox Ultimate might have cost you $1 as you said and that's great. However, if a PS Gamer is going to leave PSN and PS behind and follow COD to XBox and Gamepass Ultimate, they won't be paying $1. Ultimately(pun intended) they will be paying $180 for a year. Which ultimately(pun intended) is more than they would pay a year for PSN, which is $60(or 12*$5) if they decide to stay on PS. That extra $5 for Xbox Ultimate per month over Live sure is attractive.

If users can still get, "3*55Euro for 3 years Live and changed it to 3 years Game Pass Ultimate for 1Euro." now then that would be a good deal indeed.

*Edit* From what I see, if you upgrade from Xbox Live to Ultimate, you get one month @ $1 then start paying $15 per month after that. Not sure how the Year Live to Gamepass sub works and as I understood it, it was a limited time offer a year and a bit ago when Gamepass went live. I'm not sure this would apply to new users coming from PS to Xbox. Someone can correct me with a new article about it(like a month or two old).

**Edit** And seems it still works if you buy $180 3 year Live subscription and convert to Ultimate.

You also don't have to get Ultimate. You can just get the regular GamePass for $10.00/month. The PC version even still includes EA Play for that price, though the Xbox version does not.

As for Surface being the only quality product to compete against Apple is bologna. Samsung's Galaxy Tab line started making headlines back in 2010-2011 on how good android tablets 'could be' in the hands of a capable manufacture. The main reason wasn't Apple, it was that android OS based tablets (especially from Samsung) started rapidly taking over the mobile device space, something Microsoft would have found more of a threat than Apple's iOS.
Microsoft should make the WSA better and it will help them a lot.

Neither of these are exactly true. Microsoft knows it's a necessity to create hardware that fits it vision and ecosystem(s) of software and services. No different than Sony, Nintendo, Apple, or any other major company wanting access to consumers time and money.

Surface is what MS envisioned for a premium Windows device that they couldn't get OEMs to manufacture.

https://redmondmag.com/articles/2017/06/01/surface-laptop.aspx#:~:text="We built [the] Surface,best of Windows 10 S."

"We built [the] Surface Laptop to do two things: refresh the classic laptop form factor that our customers, especially college students, have been asking for; and make a Surface that works seamlessly to showcase the best of Windows 10 S."

In order to head off a failure similar to what happened with Windows RT and Surface RT, Microsoft is trying to show its OEMs that a more secure and manageable version of Windows doesn't have to run on low-end/cheap devices only. Premium devices can run this version, too. The best way to entice other PC makers to take a risk and ship Windows 10 S on nicer, pricier devices is to show them it's possible.

I timed out of 12months Live on the 21.1, bought 3*12months digital codes and then changed to ultimate. Everybody can do this.

I thought I was pretty clear about it.
If you are going to play it online, you are already paying for Live or PS+, and the upgrade from Live (@$10 a month) to Gamepass Ultimate (@at $15 a month) is only $60 a year, so $10 less.

The 1 dollars to upgrade to ultimate seems never expires. Heck, even if yiu have used it, you can wait for a few weeks after your ultimate expired and you can use the 1 dollars offer again, according to people posting on social media.

And with Sony probably gonna release a service to compete with gamepass, Microsoft probably gonna keep pumping that 1 dollar offer.

Here's something to think about. Bungie mentioned being able to leverage Sony's media arm. Naturally that likely means things like a TV show or Movie on some Bungie property.

However, are there any Sony Media properties where Sony owns the Movie or TV show IP that would make a good GAAS game that would fit within Bungie's specialty gaming genres (currently FPS, but they have made some really good strategy games prior to MS buying them)?

Considering how much Sony has their hands in Japanese Animation for TVs and Movies, there might be something really interesting there WRT making an FPS. Especially if there's some kind of military or shooter like Isekai that Sony owns the IP for.

SB

Bungie and sony can work with the people behind the destiny Japan live action commercial and it'll be awesome.

Heck, keep it low budget and goofy!

Goofiness is part of destiny lore

Square Enix could be a good buy for Sony if they serious about live service just for the Final Fantasy MMO.

That 18 Billion was what Sony budgeted for all of Sony over the course of 3 years. They could have adjusted that amount since, but its still for all of Sony. It is not specific to just the PlayStation division.
Sorry, I was always under the impression SIE was Playstation and had that amount to acquire studios if they wanted.

Very nice podcast with Ian Greve from Psygnosis. Its kinda ironic too how Psygnosis is used as an argument about Sony's hostility during that era. Even if Psygnosis was 100% working for Sony (which it wasnt) it didnt amount as much to the reasons why the Saturn failed and the PS1 became top. Reality is even more interesting. And that is, that Psygnosis was working as a fully independent software company even though they were owned by Sony.
Thats why we were seeing Psygnosis IPs on PC, Saturn and the N64.
But even more fascinating is the fact that they helped Sega with the ManxTT port too.

If this is to imply that I am using Psygnosis as an argument about Sony's hostility ever, I am not. I'm simply pointing out that Sony owned them, and thus any IP they made was Sony IP. And that WipEout is therefore, the longest active Sony video game IP, even if the games appeared on non-Sony platforms.

So, what happened to Wipeout on pc after its initial release? I remember wipeout being of the reasons i wanted a PS2 before its launch. Only to find out Wipeout wasnt all that great on PS2, in my opinion that is. MS had its own answer, Quantum Redshift, amazing graphics, way past PS2's wipeouts, very good gameplay. Then suddenly MS decided to abandon the game and studio just like that. Why did they? MS had a good thing going there.

Not a bad take on how Sony is approaching acquisitions. The Sony and Microsoft Batman/Superman analogy they could have kept to themselves though.

I think only the first 2 games came out on PC, but XL/2097 had the in house soundtrack and not the licensed one. Honestly, hovercraft racing games are kind of a niche now, and I think the rise to more sim-like titles (Gran Turismo, and later Forza) and open world racers (the PS2 Need for Speeds, Project Gotham) sucked all the air out of the racing genre. We pretty much have those types of games and kart racers left.
