Sony Financial Results, Q2 2008

 Let me guess.... you don't have a kid yet ? I have the lowest status at home. The pecking order is the kid, the mom, the cats, the ants (or any other pest problems), ..., me, and finally the thrash. I always get to take out the thrash. Without fail.
Patsu, sometimes I forget why it is I enjoy your company on B3D

Carl, thanks for all your input on these statements... makes life much easier. Cheers.

Carl,

can you confirm this:
Net Income (in millions)

-Sony Corporation $ 1,229

-Nintendo Co LTD $ 1,161

-Sony Computer $(1,104) (Operating loss)

Blatently stolen from gaf!

Yeah I can confirm those numbers, but you should have added the context of the time period as well. I didn't know what I was looking at at first! :)

Those numbers are for the first half of the fiscal year, so inclusive of the last two quarters. I would have also written it in yen, because the truth is the converted dollar amount will change daily. I used ~114:1 for my conversion.

To make sure it's clear to everyone that the SCE loss isn't being subtracted from Sony's results after the fact also, I'd write Sony out as:

Sony $2.333B + SCE ($1.104B) = $1.229B group net

Thanks Carl. All said n' done, a net profit of $1.2B is a good half! They Bravia sales should be through the roof this holiday season esp as the price drops a bit on them.

A good half, not quarter. :)

The reason why I think the GAF poster did that is because Nintendo only reports every half, rather than quarterly, because they don't file with the SEC.

It's not that it's old or not old, it's just that it's GameIndustry writing it. :)

I couldn't make sense of their phrasing, and where 50 and 100 billion yen were coming from or referring to, so I followed the link to Reuters for the original story, and basically it simply recaps what we know...

TOKYO, Oct 27 (Reuters) - Sony Corp (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research) said the operating margin at its electronics operations is expected to beat its target for the year to March, but operating loss at its videogame unit will likely be double its initial forecast. Operating loss at its game unit, which offers loss-making PlayStation 3 game gear, is estimated to exceed 100 billion yen

($876 million) for the current business year, compared with its original projection of 50 billion yen, a Sony spokeswoman said.

A larger loss at the game unit was expected since the electronics and entertainment company said on Thursday its game unit aims for break-even in the October-March fiscal second half after posting a loss of about 126 billion yen in the first half...

This kind of confuses me with what you stated earlier. Current business year they say it is $876 million of losses. This is their losses as reported in their Q2 Earning reports. So is this number their Q1+Q2 losses or Q2 losses only?

Whoever wrote the article for Reuters is themselves confused unfortunately... yeah the ~876 million is just for the quarter. They get it right in the third paragraph though, with: after posting a loss of about 126 billion yen in the first half...
