Actually the PS3 drain is bigger than 358.3 billion yen.
No doubt, but as I mentioned earlier let's try to keep from going off in that PS3-specific direction, for the sake of keeping the thread focused on the financial results themselves.
Actually the PS3 drain is bigger than 358.3 billion yen.
You're confused. Firstly, we're in fiscal 2008. Secondly, Sony's financial reports are delivered in yen; who cares about articles and what they say? All of my figures are in billions of yen - it's a little frustrating that this means you didn't even read my post notations.
Yes, you find it far fetched that Sony made losses in 1 1/2 years equal to their entire profit from the past ten, but that is nevertheless the case. My numbers are the numbers from their financial reports; there is no room for error and spin. I am 100% accurate in the breakdown, and by keeping all figures in yen currency fluctuations through the years are completely excised.

No, it's definitely you that is confused. We're in fiscal '08 right now.
I have another question. No, it's definitely you that is confused.
Actually the PS3 drain is bigger than 358.3 billion yen.
Fiscal year ending in March 06 includes profits of only 8.7 billon yen. Q1 was -5.9, Q2 was 8.2, Q3 was 67.8 with a -61.4 for Q4 with the losses put on the shoulder of the PS3.
Now all the these figures are inclusive of PS2 and PSP profits which partially cover the loss due to the PS3.
I would be surprised if the PS3 losses were in the 500+ billion yen range.
Direct from the letter of shareholders in Annual Report 07 page #4.
"Over the course of fiscal year 2006 (the year ended March 31, 2007)....."
If fiscal year 2006 ended about 7 months ago how are we in fiscal year 08.
Look at the Earning Release Section and explain how Sony is somehow a year late with their quarterly reports.
Hey dodbal are the numbers in Q4 reports referring to the accumulated earnings/losses since the beginning of year or just the earnings/losses of Q4 specifically?
Ahm...yeah. I love it when I am being ignored
Personally I went in their "Earnings Releases" section and they have slides there for each sector with some summary on their profitability. No for some reason Sony doesn't release a Q4 report they release their annual report during this time (if Im not mistaken or confused). The annual report are listed in a funny way.
Annual report 07 covers fiscal year 06, annual report 06 covers fiscal year 06 and so on and so on.
So I took the Annual Report 06 total profits for fiscal year 05 and subtracted all the profits from Q1fy2005, Q2fy2005 and Q3fy2005 to get a Q4fy2005 figure.
Let me guess.... you don't have a kid yet ? I have the lowest status at home. The pecking order is the kid, the mom, the cats, the ants (or any other pest problems), ..., me, and finally the thrash. I always get to take out the thrash. Without fail.
@Nesh: They do have a Q4, you just need to go to the 'Earnings Releases.' You'll find them much easier to navigate as well. The annual reports are best avoided for their verbosity if you can help it.
Their Q4 reports are conslidated figures for the whole year. Unless you know where to look, which I would pleased to know because this is the one thing I hate when looking at Sony figures as its a@@ to figure out the Q4 numbers on your own.
Check for "Earning Releases" on the left side of the page. Click on it. Pesentation slides are very helpful there
Personally I went in their "Earnings Releases" section and they have slides there for each sector with some summary on their profitability.
I opened some slides and I ve noticed that the first Quarters report less sales than the ones that follow afterwarDs (Q4>Q3>Q2>Q1).
this leads me to believe that Q4 reports accumulated operating income/losses and Revenue. So Q2 of fiscal year 2007 reports accumulated sales revenues and Operating income since Q1.
The losses Sony has according to Q2 2007 from the gaming division is 97.7 Billion Yen since the beginning of Q1. Sales revenues are in total 243.4 since Q1. Difference should give an idea of the expenses Sony is having in total. Sony is having as of now 97.7+243.4 Billion in expenses. How many of these revenues and expenses are from PS3 I do not know, but I think this is much more realistic than "gulp" more than 232 Billion yen in losses as of Q2 2007
this leads me to believe that Q4 reports accumulated operating income/losses and Revenue. So Q2 of fiscal year 2007 reports accumulated sales revenues and Operating income since Q1.
No, Q4 is Q4 and Q2 is Q2 - beyond the formal annual results they are non-cumulative. The numbers I posted earlier that you are questioning were the year '07 numbers, and quarters 1 and 2 of this fiscal year.
And after some dazed research - Dobwal the accepted norm for fiscal year nomenclature is to afix the year in which the term ends, so whatever Sony says on their own site, it's fiscal '08 for them whether they like it or not! My sanity is restored.
