Sony delay PS3 until November

I'm actually quite interested in the impact this will have on the next-next gen (Xbox-3). If the Xbox has a 4 year cycle, really, they'll launch a new machine less than three years after the PS3's launch. That will have a pretty significant impact on the industry.

CAN WE FINALLY STOP WITH THE 4-YEAR CYCLE SH*T, PLEASE?

MS won't go to a 4-year cycle. MS has released the X360 early because Xbox was making a loss and because this way they are a year ahead of Sony. Now if both keep a 5 year cycle, MS will remain a year ahead of Sony, which is more than enough for them. And Sony will probably not move to a 4-year cycle either.

Would PS3 release October in NA, with various multiplatform titles aleready out on xbox360 (Fight Night, Madden, MoH, CoD, Rainbow Six:Vegas, FIFA....) and some exclusives like Heavenly Sword, a Tekken game, Warhawk, Ridge Racer, Unreal Tournament 2007, I-8, Untold Legends, Motor Storm, F1 game etc.
how do you think it compares with the xbox360 current lineup and the announced games for this year?

I know for a fact that some of these games won't be released this year...

Sony may have just given their bread and butter a serious identity crisis. Do all of the gamers in the World really want to hear that the PS3, which is supposed to be a gaming system, has been postponed only because it's HD movie playback capability is not ready yet?

There has to be something bigger going on if that announcement was Sony's best option, because I think it could potentially do a lot of damage to the Playstation brand. Basically, Sony has told the World that the PS3 is more important to them as a HD movie player than it is as a gaming platform.

I've had a sneaking suspiscion all along that from Sony's point of view, the PS3 is a BDA device that just happens to play games. If the reason for the delay is true, with no other mitigating factors, then this just might be confirmation of that. Think about it , alot of people play games, but even more watch TV.

What would you do if you were Sony and planned to have this thing out there for the next 5 years?

Ditch the Blu-Ray drive, replace it with a HDD, and get the system out ASAP.

You are correct that Sony sees the PS3 as leverage in the next gen optical disc war, however while more people watch TV than play games at this point, the amount of people who are equipped with TVs that can playback an HD DVI/HDMI signal is miniscule compared to Sony's installed base of gamers.

This is a huge gamble/error that could kill the most profitable side of Sony Corp. if left on it's current course.

Sony are always so hell bent on having the defacto standard format in the marketplace, and it has never worked out for them (Beta, MiniDisc, SACD, etc.) That MO appears to still be in place at Sony, and it appears it may once again cost them dearly as a company.

how is this bad for Sony?

Takes the wind out of their sails when trying to dominate the market with Blu Ray devices and their vision of the PS3 being a Blu Ray player which will flood the households.

If combo drives are out in full force by the time the PS3 launches, you can safely assume that Sony will go back to pushing the PS3 as a gaming console. The success of Blu Ray is very important to Sony and it's also what has delayed the PS3 until november. For conumsers the combo drive is the optimal choice. They wont' look at the PS3 and think "hmmn, i could just get a PS3 for watching Blu Ray movies and I could game on it if I wanted to." Their reaction will now be "I already have combo drive and I don't game that much to spend another $500 on a PS3."

I seriously doubt Sony is jumping for joy hearing about this.
