Well that sounds pretty standard to me, although it IS extremely annoying. Most series I've watched haven't really turned into good shit after like half the season has aired, so you're pretty much forced to keep watching if you find a series that you think is kinda good, because it MIGHT turn awesome later, hehe.
And yeah, some of the mecha/monster designs in Mai Hime is definately hideous, but it still looks like a pretty high quality production. But on the other hand, I'll watch anything with music by Kajiura
