So much for id doing the Doom 3 Xbox port

The development team behind Tony Hawk's Pro Skater on the GBA will be handling the Xbox port of Doom 3.

According to Eurogamer.net, Activision announced at its European Activate event that Vicarious Visions will be handling the Xbox port of Doom 3. Representatives from Activision were not able to confirm the announcement. Vicarious Visions is the development team behind the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games for the GBA as well as the Xbox and GameCube ports of Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast.

Doom 3 is currently scheduled for release on the PC in Q1 2004. An Xbox release date has yet to be officially announced.

Crud.

Tony Hawk for the GBA is solid.

I'd say that gamers waiting for Doom III on Xbox (instead of the PC) might be.. well.. doomed. :) Jedi Knight 2 was a half-ass port on GCN, and the Xbox version lacked multiplayer despite the fact that Xbox Live was available at time of release.

It doesn't mean much, really. D3 is mostly SP, and Vicarious' port of JK2 to Xbox was nearly flawless minus 'no multiplayer'.

Well, D3 on Xbox is a saviour for us who lack the PCs to run it well (if at all). I was hoping The Carmack would port it himself though :? Here's hoping they don't botch it (ie: screw with the visuals).

The console ports of JK2 weren't particularly impressive. I think Vicarious Visions will likely struggle a bit with Doom 3. OTOH, id must have faith in them and perhaps id's code lends itself more to porting.

id has never done any of it's ports in-house, they always get a third party to do them. I always assumed id wasn't doing the port.

Carmack did the Jaguar port of Doom himself, is on the Xbox advisory board and has talked about Doom 3 and Xbox in a way that has lead some ppl to believe that he would do it himself. Todd Hollenshead also said Carmack might do it. Tim Willits OTOH hand said it would be outsourced.

[making this reply on DC, since DSL went down]

I think Doom3 would be better served on next-generation consoles rather than the current XBox.

It will be Doom3 in name only, much like Model 2 arcade conversions to Saturn.

Actually that may not be the best comparasion, since both PC video cards and XBox are both capable of 3D graphics and pixel shading, where as Saturn was NOT capable of producing true 3D textured polygons like Model 2 was.

Still, any XBox version of Doom3 will be watered down.

More like going from 16-Bit arcade
(System 16, CPS1, MVS) down to 16-Bit console (Genesis or SNES)

How much "watered down" do you expect it to be?In what particular areas?
Loading: will a Halo-style loading system be enough for a game like DoomIII?
Will it be somekind of a poor man's DIII (when compared with a nice PC rig); in other words, for those that can not afford a new PC, will the Xbox version do justice to the game?

Thanks¡

From what I have read, the PC version of Doom 3 will be watered down enough, they sacrificed multiplay to keep the pretty graphics. Only offering 4 player gameplay will give it little to no replay value, which will suit the console world better than the PC world, I think when that sinks in on most PC gamers, they wont be happy.

I'm sure id wouldn't give their prize possession of a game that they've spent so much time developing to some coder-schmucks that will screw it up. I expect them to take a lot more pride in their work than that.

Stop worrying so much will ya! I'm sure Doom3 on XB will be all it can be.

I think texture quality is likely to take a hit. The console versions of Jedi Outcast had severely degraded texture quality and the PC version looked like crap to begin with. Framerate is probably another concern.

Of course, M$ will likely do everything in their power to make the Xbox version at least look as good as Doom 3 running on a comparable PC.

hey ! evene their game are not totaly made in-house . 8)

and carmack is too busy preparing the next rocket engineering competion.

Carmack did the Jaguar port of Doom himself

Yes but that was many years ago, id's status and priorities are much different these days...

Of course he'd be on the board (which was really just a commitee for gathering advice. And the bulk of them were of course PC developers since thats all the MS had experience in dealing with.

Well I'd be simply more worried about the time and budget they have to work with. Art assets from PC games tend to be rather overly bloated ("roomy" nature of the platform they come from), and reworking that stuff can be time consuming (and often a low priority). Other than that though the only other worry would be how much the engine leverages CPUs (something which JC has been rather decent at)...

I've been thinking about this for quite some time. There is a fair bit of graphics stuff --reference to work load-- still being done on the CPU, AFAIK.

Additionally, IIRC they're doing some neat stuff with the physics system, looking recalling a few videos it seems like they've got a fairly decent rigid body physic system in place. Of course, there is little demonstration of said system so I'm not sure.

It'd be interesting to see what kind of physics system Carmack could churn out if he focused on it for one game. His experience with mathematics, numerical analysis in the context of computer programming on a fairly limited architecture is extensive to say the least.

I don't think the situation is that different today. Obviously id is now also a middleware provider but ultimately it's always been about the PC for them. Doom for Jaguar was done by Carmack because he felt like doing it. If he really felt like doing Doom 3 for Xbox I doubt anyone would have stopped him.

Anyway, I wonder if the switch to D3D will impact performance. Obviously Q3 engine powered games have made it over well before but those were hardly state of the art.

From what I understand, just for this one game MS is allowing id to use a private OpenGL compiler for the XDK.

Carmack doesn't care much anymore for games. His 3d game engines will feed another passion ;)

With the coming HLSL very powerfull hardware ,tools will become more important than 3d low level tech. And tools aren't ID's speciality (a friend is experiencing doom3 tool ).

Anyway ,i guess porting Doom 3 on Xbox is essentially asset optimisation, then lock the whole at 30 FPS.
