Silicon Knights and Nintendo Part
Developer of Eternal Darkness to create software for different consoles in the future.

April 13, 2004 - IGNcube today learned that Canada-based development studio Silicon Knights has ended its second-party status with Nintendo Co. Ltd. The company will effective immediately be allowed to develop software for multiple consoles including Microsoft's Xbox and Sony's PlayStation platforms.

Though no official reason was given for the decision, IGNcube speculates that the philosophies of the two companies did not mesh. Silicon Knights has always been a very content-driven studio with strong beliefs in the elements of game creation including story, artistry, sound, and technology. Nintendo has recently downplayed the role of technology in game creation and has been known to de-emphasize story, graphics and sound in favor of classic play mechanics.
"Silicon Knights and Nintendo have agreed to mutually part ways," Silicon Knights' president Denis Dyack told IGNcube.

"Nintendo and Silicon Knights have reached an agreement allowing Silicon Knights to pursue its vision of videogame entertainment with other companies," said a Nintendo of America spokesperson. "Nintendo respects the creative work of Silicon Knights and the parties have left the door open to work on future projects that meet the creative vision of both companies."

Asked if today's news meant Silicon Knights would not continue to develop for Nintendo platforms, Denis Dyack said: "No it doesn't. It's possible that we may do another game with Nintendo, actually. It just means that we've decided to break our exclusivity with Nintendo."

Dyack confirmed that Silicon Knights is now fully able to develop for competing consoles as well.

An official announcement from Nintendo is expected in the coming weeks.

Well I can't remember the last time I heard Nintendo related news this bad! What the hell are Nintendo thinking letting Silicon Knights go? Have they lost what's left of their sanity?

I find this comment a little odd however:

While I love ED and liked MGS: TS a lot none of them were state of the art technology wise, or even anywhere close. They were both nice looking games, excellent art work in ED for instance and some really nice visual bits in MGS:TS. But they're hardly a top developer as far as graphics technology goes.

Maybe it's better for overal quality to have an independent company as a partner.

Yeah I'm sure Nintendo will agree with you when those quality games are on competing systems...

This has to be said a second time. The first Legacy of Kain game was 10X better than what came after it.

That's unfortunate. ED was my favorite Cube title and my second favorite game of this generation after Halo. Really nice texturing and filtering in that game and some of the best game dialogue in a long while.

I wonder if this is part of Nintendo's "bold new direction". LOL.

Baaah they sucked anyway!

Seriously, this is too bad for Nintendo. Creative differences can be a bitch (if that's really what happened).

Personally, I really enjoyed ED. Couldn't get enough of that game. I didn't bother with TTS, being a remake and all. There just didn't seem to be enough of new stuff in the game. Still, ED left a good impression on me. I'm looking forward to what they'll be doing on whatever system they decide to work on.

If I had to guess, I'd say that back when ED was being developed everything was fine on both sides. Nintendo probably wasn't thrilled with the kind of sales that the game produced but, they couldn't really fault SK for that. ED was still a quality game.

But I'm thinking that the decision to remake a 5 yo game probably didn't sit too well with the folks over at SK, except Denis Dyack who didn't seem to have a problem with it. I remember when I heard the news I thought "a remake of MGS? Why??". I try to put myself in their shoes and, I wouldn't want to work on remakes. I'd rather work on new stuff.

But who knows really what happened. Maybe neither party was happy with the results that this exclusivity deal had produced so far.

Perhaps the sales of ED/TS on GC weren't high enough to sustain Silicon Knights? Neither Nintendo or Silicon Knights would ever admit it though, as it'd be huge bad press.

Didn't Eternal Darkness bomb saleswise?

I do not remember where I red it but they admitted that the slaes at least in the US barely hit above 100K. So that is kinda weak.

ED sold in line with other survival horror games but MGS bombed in Japan and looks to have done the same in the US. I actually didn't expect MGS to do well but I think it actually ended up doing worse than it had potential for as neither Konami nor Nintendo seemed to acknowledge its existance. Now the lack of marketing was basically Konami's fault but Nintendo should've realized that the game wouldn't sell on GameCube. Oh well...

Sales and image change were the primary reasons for the SK buyout. Both did not yield good results. Nintendo GC is still a kid console and SK games were huge flops (even MGSTS considering the licence).

Remember Rare was thrown away because Rare games did not sell anymore.

Do you mean Blood Omen or Soul Reaver?

I liked Soul Reaver :?

Blood Omen. That was the first Legacy of Kain game. Soul Reaver was O.K., but nowhere near as good as Blood Omen. And Blood Omen 2 was just horrible. They pushed out a half-finished game.

Blood Omen.

Soul Reaver was a game with no licence until late in its dev stage, and then they did get the LOK licence onti it to boost sales. At least, according Denys Dyack.

170,000 were the last U.S sales I saw for ED.

wazoo

Rare were sold because they wee barely releasing games anymore never mind selling them. Star Fox Adventure sold well though AFAIR. Or at least ok anyway.

There's no way SN can be discarded because of poor sales from ED and MGS. ED was the first in a new franchise and was just one of those great games that slip through the cracks sometimes. MGS was a exactly what ED were asked to create, an updated remake of MGS. If it doesn't sell then its not really SN's fault. You have to be far more patient then 2 games with such a talented developer, especially when there games are getting/have gotten such good reviews.

On MGS sales:

I don't know how MGS: TS is selling in the U.S or Japan. I haven't seen total sales of games since it was released. But here in the U.K its selling billiantly fom what I can see. It was sold out everywhere when I tried to buy it on release. My local GAME, HMV and three other independent stores I looked at were all sold out. Amazon was sold out, so was Play.com, Gameplay, SimplyGames ect I finally managed to buy the game a few days later as one local store got more stock. But everytime I look around in game shops (I work right next to a massive indoor shopping center so I'm often in there looking around on my dinner beak) its either out of stock or in stock then out the next day. Even now weeks after its release its still going out of stock regularly and HMV have it in there best sellers section. So it suprises me quite a lot that its doing so badley in the U.S and Japan, if that definitely is the case. Although it initially suprised me at how well it was selling here. After all it is just a remake...
