Screamer, one of the best 90s arcade racers made to date, is back! (2026)

Milestone returns to its origins and will create a remake of the game that made them popular in the first place, Screamer, one of the best games I've played, which had incredible graphics for the time. The cars were totally original, not versions of cars from that era, and they were very well designed, artistically wise.

It was one of those games I discovered after having my frist two games ever, Microsoft Golf and The Need for Speed 1.

it was the ridge/racer/daytona/sega rally of the PC back in the day.
I remember the slider for draw distance in the settings.
But i had more fun with big red racing and death rally.

Loved Screamer, i have the big box version also Screamer 2 and Screamer Rally
Screamer 2 and Screamer Rally made me drool with those graphics, but I never had them. I still remember in my mind how colourful Screamer Rally looked to me, for some reason.

The draw distance was quite noticeable, but it was typical at the time. I had my first computer and it was a good PC for the era, a Pentium 100 with 32MB of RAM and a horrible Trident graphics card that I thankfully changed over time. Buying the Monster 3D was one of my best buys to date.

My PC was enough to run this game smoothly and the graphics were so impressive.

I didn't play Big Red Racing nor Death Rally, but I played other games like Speed Haste (which was named Circuit Racer in other countries it seems)

I remember the day I launched a demo of Screamer 2 and declared that games have finally achieved photorealism. :D Replayed both games recently and realized they weren't as bone crushing as I remembered. I was just crap at racing games in particular and understanding what game wants me to do in general. I hope this game turns out at least OK.

well, nobody would blame you. that was the golden era of discovery. A lot of advances in a relatively short time. I didn't play Screamer 2 nor Screamer Rally but I remember how good they looked.

However, the original Screamer was more impactful for me 'cos those graphics were some of the best I had seen to date, including Battle Arena Toshinden and a few other games, it looked like you had an arcade machine at home.

In my case Toshinden and Tomb Raider were responsible for countless hours spent "modelling" in POV-Ray.
wow! I remember Povray, and in fact we talked about it the other day in this thread.

My car games look like this:

"Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge" - 1990
"Lotus Turbo Challenge 2 - 1991"
"Lotus III: The Ultimate Challenge" - 1992
"Jaguar XJ220" - 1992

Change from Amiga to PC, due to "Star Wars: X-Wing - Collectors' CD-ROM" - 1993
Did a lot of flightsims and didn't play any cargames until:

"The Need for Speed" - 1994
"Need for Speed II" - 1997

Totally missed this series, have to dig into videos as I have no nostalgia about these games

nice looking games most of them iirc from reading tech magazines.

Of those, The Need for Speed 1 along with Microsoft Golf were my first games ever. in late 1995 when I got a PC -lost the spleen in a car's accident, not my fault, I was too young to have the driving license and the insurance company had to pay me a compensation, with which I bought a powerful PC for me at the time and gave the rest of the money to my parents.

I made the swap after seeing a friend play the X-wing game on his PC, I knew I had to change platform and the Amiga was a dying platform at the time.
Flightsims on the PC also had a pull on me.
Thus I went from the Amiga to the PC and since I liked flightsims I never went the console route.
I still have a joystick for flightsims/star wars games, but also need the keyboard, due to the many inputs/settings that needs adjust on the fly.

I might give this a spin if it is done well (y)

have you played Super Eurofighter 2000? It had a pretty impressive avionics manual with 200+ pages. :p

As for the console route, I went that route in early 2005, and knew what it is the fanboy stuff and the console wars. I was oblivious to both things before. Left console gaming in 2015 and the XB1 is probably going to ever be my last console, dunno, maybe I can get a handheld in the future, but it's more probable I get a Windows based one, so...

This is a short list on the top of my head (and some quick googles for the years):

"F-15 Strike Eagle" - 1985
"F29 Retaliator" - 1989
"Their Finest Hour: The Battle of Britain" 1989
"A-10 Tank Killer" - 1989
"F-19 Stealth Fighter" - 1990
"Falcon 3.0" - 1991
"Gunship 2000" - 1991
""B-17 Flying Fortress" - 1992
"1942: The Pacific Air War" - 1994
"Fleet Defender" - 1994
"Jane's ATF: Advanced Tactical Fighters" - 1996
"EF2000" - 1996
"Super EF2000" - 1997
"F-22 Raptor" - 1997
"Falcon 4.0" - 1998
"Enemy Engaged: Apache vs Havoc" 1998
"F-22: Air Dominance Fighter" - 1998
"Falcon 4.0: Allied Force" - 2005
"Digital Combat Simulator" - 2008

All flight sims came with BIG manuals, like "F-19 Stealth fighter":

And even keyboard overlays, to help you remember the keys in-game:

Thanks for taking me for a trip down memory lane :runaway: :ROFLMAO:

Had all these myself on the amiga, still remember the music for the 2nd lotus game among a bunch of other amiga game music. Good times.

Played nearly all those 90's sims on pc aswell, janes and f22 were probably my faves. Falcon 4 had massive issues, the guys I played with were all keen on the dynamic campaign but we never really got a stable bug free experience back then. I did see not long ago people have still been updating/modding/fixing it.

Your obviously a gentleman of fine taste and culture ;)
