Samsung to back Blu-Ray format 100%

South Korea based tech giant Samsung has said that they are fully supportive of the Sony’s Blu-Ray format and have no plans to launch HD DVD players in the future.

David Steel, vice president of Samsung Electronics said in a statement: “Samsung is going all-out for Blu-ray. We were the first one to market the Blu-ray player.â€￾

The company added that they also have no plans to develop the so-called combo devices, which support both the Blu-ray and HD-DVD platforms.

This is the first time Samsung has clearly stated its preference for the Blu-Ray format over the Toshiba’s HD DVD format. Their local rivals in Korea LG Electronics also have abandoned plans to develop HD DVD players.

Blue-Ray drives use a blue-violet laser beam to read and write to the disc. It has storage capacities starting from 25GBs for a single layer disc.

Dude there's a whole lot more to B3D! The "Video Technology & HTPC" subforum of "3D Hardware, Software & Output Devices" would've been a good choice (although it would've taken me a few extra days to see it there!).

I can't believe the nature of this format war. One side makes gains then the other rebalances and. When will it all end...? (No need to answer that.)

Wait, what...? Seriously? What with the combo chips (likely followed soon after by not-much-more-expensive dual/combo laser heads) getting cheaper and more plentiful, I would assume it only MORE likely that large manufacturers would support both. Certainly not drop one so early in the "war."

I think its relevant, kinda to console section. People are wondering if it was the right choise to include blu-ray player to PS3. (In my opinion yes)

But yes, it could be posted in another section. It will be interesting to see if Sony's gamble pays off, if it does, sony's stockholders should be having more than big smile on theyr face when they are doing everyday business.

Is this news? I thought Samsung was one of the original partners in Blu-Ray development along with Sony?

As far as including the drive in the PS3 goes, the pictures from 360 HD-DVD threads have really made me sit up and take notice.

Believe it or not, that's a positive for the PS3. I had no desire to buy a HD-DVD or a BR player prior to reading those threads and looking at those pictures. Now, I want a next-gen movie player. And one comes standard on the PS3.

Heh... If only they could make a proper player, this would actually be good news! As it stands, they're giving a bad image to the format.

Well, the article not only shows that Samsung has fully conmitted to Blu-ray, it also says that other korean manufactures like LG have decided to drop HD DVD entirely. With the majority of movie studios and hardware manufactures favoring blu-ray, each announcement regarding a company supporting one of the sides is really important.

And regarding the section, i already said that i wasnt sure where to post it, one of the reasons for posting it in the console section was because Blu-ray is part of one of the console´s technologies.

Also, i would have never imagined that "HTPC" would be the correct section to post it when i dont even know what HTPC is

In reality, these sorts of statements mean nothing. They can always say something like "due to market situation we have to change" or "We have to adapt to the market shift" if things turn to another direction.

I still think it's more likely to have combo players in the future. Even with less successful formats such as DVD-Audio vs SACD, there are plenty of combo players which can play both.

Link to those threads?

Anyhow, isn't the 360 hd-dvd drive MADE by Samsung? (Edit: N/M, Toshiba it seems)
I also find it strange to see hd-dvd dropped when it so far has been doing better than blu-ray (and without the sony hype behind it, there's not really a single major backer to look for with hd-dvd), but I guess blu-ray, contrary to sony's comments, is expected to succeed solely due to ps3 and not due to its own merits and sony's ability to market it.

HD-DVD players aren't intrinsically cheaper to make than Bluray - they use the same components. The price differences are due to a lot of subsidising going on. Toshiba - the only significant manufacturer of HD-DVD and Microsoft subsidise HD-DVD players in an attempt to win the format war, and Sony subsideses the Bluray drive in PS3.

The other manufacturers are pricing high due to the supply shortage. When the shortages are resolved and component prices drop, it is likely both will be under $200 and possibly Bluray cheaper due to more market competition.
