He didn't falsly indicate anything. You seem to have a very romantic image of business in your mind, where a company is "sworn enemy" with another one. Very Japanese. But it's just not the case.
All these companies compete with each other but at the same time are joint in many businesses, like MS is partnered to Sony in the PC business (ot liek Sony had much choice really).
There's no "being enemies". It's about money, if 2 competing companies see a way to make money by joining forces, they certainly won't go "Hell no! You're an enemy!" and give up.

London boy romantic image nothing. ;)

Listen, of course they will cooperate on some things. Maybe one day they'll be the best of 'allies.' But what I'm discussing here is marketing, a field I was in for quite a while. All I'm saying is, expect some sort of cross-promotion, from one if not both of these comapnies.

And if I'm wrong I'm wrong, I'll freely give you your due 'I concede defeat' a couple of months from now if I turn out to be mistaken in reading these tea leaves. ;)

Same here matey!! :D

Samsung is known for their DLP rear-projection sets. They also sell a cheap line of CRT HDTVs, mostly to Walmart. Some of their models have a more shallow picture tube depth so those would be good choices for kiosks. I think the smallest HDTV they make is a 16:9 26-inch CRT. That's quite a jump up from current kiosks but on the other hand, if you make it much smaller, you lose the impact of HDTV too.

I've heard some people have had problems with gaming on DLPs?

Also, if people who don't know much about HDTVs buy next-gen consoles based on HDTV kiosks, maybe there will be complaints that the games don't look anywhere near as good as they did at the store.

They may need to put disclaimers saying you need HDTV sets to get picture quality comparable to what's demonstrated on the kiosks.

I have to disagree on that one. I had my Xbox hooked up on my 22" crt-monitor, and for example Soul Calibur 2 looks stunning on 720p, even the 480p games looks so much better than interlaced games. The difference is huge. Now I have 61" dlp tv and ofcourse it delivers better experience, but 720p is nice no matter what you use to watch it. I don't even bother buying games that doesnt' support progressive scan anymore, interlaced looks really blurry on big screen.

This just sounds like a nice strategic business deal. If you all recall Samsung is making the new flash hybrid HDDs for Longhorn. It's just smart business to kill two birds with one stone. I'm sure MS got a good price on these HDTVs since kiosks only need a cheap HDTV, it doesn't need state of the art. Also Samsung is the leader in terms of LCD and Plasma glass size, quality is getting better too. They've shown IIRC a 100 inch HD LCD/Plasma the largest in the world. Also remember that SONY LCD tv with that nice tricolor LED backlighting? Well Samsung also sells that exact same model under their own brand too. ;)

Uh no, you're mistaking Samsung for Sanyo. As a matter of fact Walmart doesn't carry any Samsung tvs at all.

This is the one I was thinking of:

http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Sams.../sem/rpsm/oid/91175/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

It's only 20-inches deep and seems a bit lighter than normal 27-inch tubes would be. It'll still make for big kiosks but not as bad as it could be.

It's only $700 but I'd rather spend more to get a bigger screen and probably better performance than these entry-level models. Should be fine for a kiosk though.

Nah theyd probably use this:

pretty and pretty cheap too

I don't think they'd use anything too big for the demo stands.
The monitors will likely be 16:9, so maybe something 20" wouldn't take too much space.

the monitor i posted is wider but much much thinner and lighter and about the same price $799 from digital 1234 as the CRT...

Nope, they said it's the 23" one. They got 25000 of them, they better be very good

The new 23" Samsung LCD TV (LNR238W) to be paired at retail with the new Xbox console offers a super-fast 12 millisecond pixel switching speed, which will enable intense action while overcoming any motion artifacts.

What would be REALLY good is a special discount. "Get an Xbox2 and get THIS new Samsung HDTV with a 10-20% Discount!!1one1!".

That would be nice.
