RGB LED backlighting fix the colour accuracy problem LCDs had by making it easier to separate the spectra of the colour components. It can also fix the dynamic range issue by having the LEDs behind the display and individually driving them according to local image intensity (more expensive than using side lit techniques though and there are patent issues, so this won't see universal adoption even among LED backlit displays).
