Sad day for high quality. Pioneer ends Plasma Production

By the numbers I'm sure something like the Bravia's Triluminos displays can compete.

RGB LED backlighting fix the colour accuracy problem LCDs had by making it easier to separate the spectra of the colour components. It can also fix the dynamic range issue by having the LEDs behind the display and individually driving them according to local image intensity (more expensive than using side lit techniques though and there are patent issues, so this won't see universal adoption even among LED backlit displays).

From what I saw, it seems to me that even with the expensive LCDs like Samsung's 7 or 9 series you have to turn down the brightness quite a bit, or else your eyes hurt. And if you turn it down, you lose the details.

Also, there is a motion resolution thingy. Most high-end sets are 100/120Hz and if you turn i on, you will increase motion resolution, but also get that video look on film material. So, no benefit, acutally. :)

Film look is right up there with interlacing in the list of "I wish it would die already".

The ideal LCD display at the moment would use high refresh (~200 Hz) with BFI and RGB led backlighting ... unfortunately no one seems to be combining the two at the moment.

I went by the Best Buy today and I saw the TVs and the Pioneer Elite is really amazing...hehe so is its price! I saw the Sony XBR8 on display too and it was quite a stunning tv as well. I noticed in general that the LCDs usually were a bit brighter than the plasmas. For example they had clips of various movies playing in 1080p format across different TVs and I think it was just the way the Pioneer Elite plasma was calibrated...it could be the way the blacks just stood out. I for one am sold! Now I have to wait till April before pulling the trigger :)

For some reason or other I have never really been a fan of the Sharp series.

That's unfortunate because the XS Series is the new top of the line models with local dimming wide color gamut LED baclights, superthin panels and 1,000,000 to 1 CR.

If you have the money why would you buy any other LCD? The XS line is THE BEST LCD line...Period.;)
