Ryse: Son of Rome [XO]

Oh sweet thanks for the heads up. I just canceled my order and reordered at the lower price. It's still the day one edition so that's cool. Anyway I'm sure you'll see pics and impressions from forum members fairly soon. I know Dave and blakjedi said they got the game.

Looks like Amazon has the other day one games discounted as well...nice.

So anyone here actually buy Ryse? I really want to "see" this game, but want other impressions from our community as I know you are mostly sane. I keep hovering over the buy button..

I bought Ryse. It can be a little repetitive, but it is not a snooze fest like some people are saying. You have three types off gameplay hack n slash, sqaud march and using spears and spear launchers. The story is decent but the assets are outstanding. It is extremely beautiful and the environments have good variety. You can also collect scrolls and collectables.
You gain Xp and use it to level up attack, health and executions. There is also a focus mode that slows down time.

It really is the most cinematic and beautiful game Ive seen. Plus it is fun to play its just not as deep as some games in its genre. The combat reminds me of Darksiders2 mixed with Batman AA.

I bought Ryse, and I like hack and slash game play as well, but I'm struggling to keep interested in it, even though I'm only on the second chapter. It does look very nice indeed (though I'm running it on an old 43" 720p plasma) but the sheer lack of variety in combat moves is beginning to get to me, plus the fact you 'have to' do an execution move to finish things off. Sometimes it seems to flow together quite well but mostly its a bit of a chore. it's pretty though :) One weird thing (which may be my calibration) is that the characters almost seem to jump out from the background , particularly in the cutscenes. I seem to have done well on my pre-orders, got Ryse for the Xbox and Knack due on PS4 next week. great choice of games! Oh - also pretty grumpy about the inclusion of micro-transactions so you can buy gold to improve your character (you can do the same with xp , and it doesn't push it, just seems a very odd thing to have. welcome to the next-gen I guess....

Bugger. My friend would have gotten that but doesn't want to have to put a disk in every single time he wants to play the game. Yay for shortsighted people on the internet whining and destroying marketplace competition. Now his only option is DD (60 USD versus the 50 USD at Amazon) and he can no longer purchase from retail stores like he would have been able to before the changes. Sad...

Regards,
SB

Yep pretty sad indeed...not to mention he won't be able resell it in the future if he decides not to keep it after finishing the game.

Anyway Amazon reviews are coming in and I see lots of 4/5 star verified. One in particular which I found quite interesting...short and to the point...not that I need any kind of affirmation from others so I could feel good about my own purchasing decisions like some people...

"Solid game despite the hating reviews from the "experts", November 23, 2013

This review is from: Ryse: Son of Rome Day One Edition - Xbox One (Video Game)

This is a pretty legit game. Graphically its beautiful and the actual gameplay is subtly challenging in that this is NOT just a button masher, its all about timing (this not a reference to QTE timing) and finesse. Its a cool launch title that will give me my $60 worth just from the campaign.

The arena multiplayer is also challenging! Get play to hone your skills and execution moves. Very cool environments and non-stop hack-n-slash fun.

Whether you buy it at $60 or wait for a price drop, you won't be disappointed.

Anyway high quality videos of some of the other stages in the game. It's a very pretty game.

Also from reading some of the comments it seems it's a 6-9 hour game which is fair for the amount/quality of art assets put into this game.

I'd have very little faith in user reviews from early adopters playing their chosen consoles flag ship game. They're heavily vested in this game being percieved in a positive light.

Then you don't have anything to worry about...;)

Personally I have little faith in paid "expert" reviews that's why I don't really pay attention to them regardless whether they like a game or not...and since I'm a top reviewer with 95% approval rating on Amazon I could probably do a better job than a lot of those so called "experts"...lol.

You dont have to have faith in my review. I dont care what anyone thinks of Ryse.
I was responding to a user request. Not everyone in the world is an uber fanboy of just one system. Still not all fans that prefer a certain brand console over others are trying to make that system look better than competing systems.
I do prefer xbox consoles over sony and Nintendo consoles but I do enjoy them all and there is no agenda in the opinion I gave off Ryse. This whole us against them attitude in gaming is getting really old. Ill never understand people spewing hatred towards a game console just because they prefer another brand.

No offence meant, I was talking about the Amazon reviews.

Btw not all cutscenes are FMV. Some are real-time, like this one

So, the reason that cutscenes are in FMV is not due to not being able to make them in real-time. So maybe loading?

That is very interesting indeed. Would be nice to find out what the reason was. If it was for a better user experience I'm all for it.

I took some pictures when I was able to get up close and work out a good angle. Skydrive Ryse Shares

Hmm..these are the low quality shots. Tomorrow I will see what I need to do to get the high quality to show up.

Edit: Ha - boppy pillow and Kinect at the bottom of the screen. ;)

Not yet, but considering it after reading the user impressions. Can all games be purchased digitally?

I'm curious about Ryse because it's Crytek's attempt at a completely different game. I fully expect the game play to suck, but I want to hear more about from people who actually played it (and don't have an agenda).

Updated the quality of my uploads

I am playing at the hardest difficulty and I am getting attacked by more than one enemy, they do not seem to be waiting around for me to attack them. So I do think some reviewers were on lower levels.

@NRP - Yes all games except for those with accessories (Skylanders) can be purchased digitally. GameStop is mad at me for buying digital money cards, lol.

Yep. Every game is digitally available and day 1. You can even buy them on xbox.com and it'll start the download remotely so it's ready to go when you get home.

*AHEM* Please pardon the recent off-topic thread derailments. It shouldn't happen again as the one who derailed is now enjoying a nice 6 months vacation away from the forums.
