Ryse: Son of Rome [XO]

Crytek combats Ryse QTE concern with improved AI

So it seems they've improved the AI and reworked the QTEs to be more subtle.

It's mind boggling they had to go through the whole backlash to this. Did they really not anticipate this? QTE's have been hated since the sega CD, and even when their implementation is good, they just have a bad reputation among general gamers. Where do the guys at crytek live?

It was never QTE. It still isn't QTE. To say that it was or is, is pure insanity. It was simply a stylistic representation that the uninformed mistook for being QTE..

Yup, just like the the Blue Lightning bolts above opponents heads in Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City aren't QTEs (they respresent that you should hit your counter button) or the or the Red Lightning bolts above opponents heads indicating that you should either use your stun button (dagger wielders) or redirect button (dagger and stun baton enemies).

It's pretty much the exact same thing and doesn't represent a QTE.

I believe people thought of QTE because this game was originally a Kinect 2.0 title, but it's not anymore.

Which is quite a big shame, because the game is so beautiful to look at.. Imagine using Kinect 2.0 to give orders to the troops, and watch how it all plays out, like you are a real life King Leonidas, only better of course because you have even stronger troops to command.
I really see it working: voice commands, gestures. 'Thumbs down' to order a no-POW -kill.
Is it possible that there will still be Kinect 2.0 features?

Now all they have to do is redo their animation system.

and make the gameplay fun :p ! j/k

Tell that Final Fantasy creators. They think western gamers love QTEs and specially added them into their games.

I believe people thought it had QTEs because that's what was reported in the press and basically what was in the E3 demo.

If a button prompt shows on screen and if you hit the button to get a desired effect, that is a QTE by most definitions. It's just like God of War, unless that doesn't have QTEs now.

I've always felt the difference is that in a QTE, a button press sets off a *series* of actions of the character, its much more cinematic.

In the GOW games when you would press a button in a QTE, he would do a number of actions before getting to the next "node" where a button press is required.

In this instance its a 1:1 mapping where you press a button and he does a single finishing move instead of "jumps on dragon's head, stabs one eye, pulls out four teeth, and starts to strangle it with its own tail."

In both games it is a finishing move. How extravagant or cinematic they are is kind of irrelevant and subjective. Lots of normal creatures in GoW have QTEs finishers which are pretty quick. The idea for both is, push the button in time, get a cool effect, don't push it get something less cool and typically less reward (xp).

There are different kinds of QTE, and here's it's not like shenmue.

Shenmue had the best barber shop QTE though.

"We went to Andy Serkis and The Imaginarium. We worked with some of the best performance capture people and all you saw was this X icon," Esteves explained. "Our cinematics director was like, you're killing me man!

"When you play it now it feels fresh. We still give you the hints: the blue outline or the yellow outline, but once we removed the buttons and went with the outline, aesthetically it felt better. You start seeing the facial animation. You still have this loop, okay, what button is it? And hit the timing. So it just made it a bit dynamic."

Then we look at what exactly is QTE, from wiki

In video games, a quick time event (QTE) is a method of context-sensitive gameplay in which the player performs actions on the control device shortly after the appearance of an on-screen prompt.

So what makes Ryse not a QTE?

Context-sensitive, check
player performs action on the control device, check
action requires to be done shortly after, check (or you lose it)
on screen prompt, check (before it was icons, now it's an outline)

Being no-fail doesn't free it from being a QTE.

Being no-fail doesn't free it from being a QTE.

That basically makes almost all modern day games QTE games. And almost all past games QTE's as well, just they didn't show the button prompt.

You'll notice that an event is generally a series of actions. Note that your own quote is "actions" and not "action" or "action or actions". God of War boss battles end in QTE's. A series of "actions" that must be performed in order to resolve the event.

Otherwise shiving something in TLOU would be a QTE (limited duration chance to perform action), grabbing a enemy in TLOU would be a QTE as it would meet the "player performs actions on the control device shortly after the appearance of an on-screen prompt. " assuming it was singular "action" and not plural "actions. Opening a door would be a QTE as well going by the strict wording, again if it was singular "action" and not plural "actions". Taking down an enemy in stealth in Splinter Cell would be a QTE. Countering an enemy in Batman: AA or Batman: AC would be a QTE. The extremely simple act of hopping on the back of a mutant after the circle of stars appears over their head in the Batman games would be a QTE. Hijacking a car in GTA would be a QTE. Etc.

Except they aren't.

Guitar hero is an entire game dedicated to a QTE. Ninja Blade had a lot of QTEs. GOW is built on showcasing cinematic QTEs at the end of boss battles. The original Witcher at launch featured QTEs at the end of boss battles.

Who really cares about the definition of QTEs???

Either the game is fun and entertaining while playing, or not.

Ryse gameplay for me looks good. People seem to be a bit hostile towards Ryse?!?

Let's wait and see what the devs deliver...despite the 'but teh crYsis 1 is open world' moaning, Cryteks latest game Crysis 3 has fabulous gameplay and is super fun!

If context sensitive actions were QTE, then every single game would be a QTE since you need to hit Start to begin.

Just wanted to bring this up again to show the absurdity over the "omg qte r evilz and hat3d. Ryse is teh suck" mentality.

People seem to be a bit hostile towards Ryse?!?

Certain people are because:

It looks so good (real next generation graphics not current gen uprezzed)
Is exclusive so can't be played on that other console
Uses Crytek's state of the art next gen engine
Shows that console bench racing is pointless

I get the feeling that this is going to be the xbones Heavenly Sword equivalent. Technical showcase, looks pretty good, but ends up being shallow and repetitive. And then is quickly forgotten when the next wave of games arrive.

HS didn't really have any kind of identity to begin with...it was neither here nor there. Ryse seems to be more focused and knows what kind of game it's supposed to be.
