[Rumour] PS3 games..Sony doing a little shopping?

Huh? SONY had an advantage over Xbox this generation because they entered the market sooner to establish a significant installed base long before MS entered with Xbox.
Which helped how?

Where's the URL for the gamespot rumor of those news btw?

It was gamespy, from there new years predictions:

http://www.gamespy.com/articles/578/578391p1.html

They make it sound bigger than this, though (though maybe relatively speaking this would be a big defection for xbox), and I'm not sure if "lightsaber" and "through the head" go so well together, but..

It's always possible this is what they've heard, and Mr. Nighttrain thinks it's what Gamespy also heard, and that's why he refers back to it, when actually they might be two different things. Who knows?

You seem like a smart individual so you shouldn't have a problem in figuring it out...

So it's about these lines in their "predictions".
2) A Major Defection Will Occur -- New consoles often result in breakups and new couplings. Longtime Square fans were surprised when the company went to bed with Sony and announced that Final Fantasy would be a PlayStation exclusive. Well, we have a slew of new systems in the works. Though they'll be coming out over the next two years, a big announcement will take place this year, probably at E3 2005. I'm talking enormous -- along the lines of Square taking Final Fantasy back to Nintendo or Rockstar taking Grand Theft Auto to Xbox 2 exclusively.

My sources have given me an idea of who will be leaving who, but I can't really say right now. I'm pretty sure I'd get an easily identifiable weapon through the head. (Perhaps that's a hint.)
For Square, it was when Playstation could get enough audience in terms of business (3 millions or so), but defection at the new console launch? I wonder what's the logic behind this (if it's true).

Dunno about smart! :p Best I can think, userbase=mindshare, better software selection, for new buyers, general stuff. The idea I suppose is that the earlier you roll your snowball down the ski-slope, the more snow it picks up, the bigger it grows. Someone following later with their own snowball will never catch yours up in size because you started earlier. I don't think the markets really works this way. Many a product that has been first to market hasn't dominated and I don't see larger intial userbase as any real strength compared to the other factors a product faces with its competitors.

At best with a larger userbase, PS2 was obviously more appealing to develop for than XB with no user base, but with the amount of money MS were throwing around and willing to use there was nothing to stop them securing quality titles, something PS2 lacked from what I hear. I don't think anyone ascribes the PS2 outselling XB so strongly to simple being first out there (except maybe Microsoft!).

MS's biggest worry shouldn't be PS3 having an early installed base (which won't happen this round of course; they've made sure of that) but that PlayStation is synonymous with home gaming.

I'm guessing it could be part of a wider strategy aimed at getting as many Xbox fans, and generally people who are interested in buying a X360, to have another look at PS3 and to encourage them to wait things out - to wait for PS3, in other words. Targetting well-known "xbox" games is one way to take the wind out of MS's sails, especially with the hardcore that put MS where they are, really. I would be surprised to see some very good looking FPSes on PS3 at E3..

I guess they also might just be learning from PS2 mistakes in terms of launch lineups. They need appealing launch lineups from day one in the US and Europe, so targetting western content now makes sense.

Actually GAF is in a ...strange mood right now, where just about everyone is an industry insider.I've seen regular posters(with no previous "credibility" whatsoever) suddenly becoming the ,know it all, insiders. It's like never-neverland or something.

There's only 2-3 people who are actually involved in the gaming industry and are posting on GAF and none of them have started any rumors. It's hillarious watching regular posters becoming "industry insiders" and hyping the kids there. In fact GAF is the place to be right now for a good laugh

I completely agree.

There's a lot more than that, but I can't personally vouch for the 3 dropping hints here. As I said, grain of salt for now..

Yeah, you can take it with a grain of salt forever, not just now buddy!

Honestly the surrealistic "feel" of GAF right now is something else.I'm an xbox fan(and have n problem admitting it) and i've never had so much fun with a videogames' forum before despite all the "doom and gloom" concerning the xbox360 that takes place in there(or because of that??  ).Honestly it takes me back to 2001 again(only wth more "insiders" this time).

On a serious note(and as a GAF veteran,i've been reading and writing on that forum since 2000),the only people that are trully reliable there are Chespace and Johntv.(and sometimes Blimblim but only when t comes to xbox0related news). The rest are just...well a bunch of characters that have transformed from regular posters to.....industry insiders(and not common industry insiders these guys suddenly know EVERYTHING).
Anyway these rumor-threads have turned into jokes right now(with multiple...megatons) and it's not worth arguing about.

I mean E3 us just a few days away and all will become clear.....

So KOTOR is one, and another...? With colorful avatars the long GAF thread is a bit hard on my eyes  BTW I'm still holding the idea of the PS3 2005 launch (at least in Japan). The mature 90nm tech is there, the new HD disc standard will come soon (at least its physical format), and games will complete it.

If you really were a GAF regular, you'd know there were far more than this. Off the top of my head: Nathkenn? MarkMcD? DCharlie (though he may be "out of the industry" for now)? Bishoptl, even?

I know that says nothing about these guys, but GAF does have a lot of industry people on it to one degree or another.

Who knows? There may not be another. I'm saying it could be one part of larger strategy encompassing a number of different things, not just specific "xbox" games. For example, a showing of some nice looking games of the type normally associated with Xbox (e.g. FPSes), crowing about performance/features leadership (basically taking that position previously occupied by Xbox). It just wouldn't surprise me to see Sony highlight those kinds of things since MS is their first competitor, and they'll want people to wait...so they'll want to attract the typical xbox-buyer's attention, i think (even if just as a short term strategy).

 Every second thread on here is quoting GAF on someone's lies or what he heard from his cousin's friend's sister's pet Parakeet. Half the people who post these rumours think they're Dr DoLittle and talk to animals...example 'a little birdy told me'. :p

Why's the PS2 install base matter? PS2 sold well before it had a huge advantage in install base; that's how they got the large install base! The install base advatange PS2 did wield was that of original PS owners who upgraded, and that advantage Sony take into the next round too.

Huh? SONY had an advantage over Xbox this generation because they entered the market sooner to establish a significant installed base long before MS entered with Xbox.

Do you have any idea how you sound? It's true, Sony launched before, Microsoft, but Sony is continuing to roll over Microsoft, week by week, and month by month. If your logic made any sense, that would mean the Deamcast or Nintendo would be rolling over Sony by now. They are not, however. That lead that Sony had did not grant them more than half the number of consoles sold.

Now, you talk as if they will be entering the next round on one limb. The last time I calculated, they still had that installed base and they are raising the stakes this time. You are simply underestimating them due to pure hype alone.

More over, I honestly don't get you people. First you talk about Sony only having a few months ahead of Microsft to prep their console before launch - leaving a very small leap in hardware, which also says little for Microsoft's early advantage. Then you talk about the postponing of their console to a whopping few years at most due to a DVD drive. Either way you look at it they are gaining an advantage in one of the two areas regardless of how you may see different. So either you aren't conceiving the flaws spewed or you are choosing to be totally naive. Pick one.

Certainly current generation will remain far more profitable for a few years than the next-generation consoles. The installed userbase is there, developing is far easier because no additional cost is required compared to next-generation,...
A large number of blockbuster titles (FFXII, The Legend of Zelda,...) still has to be released this generation, how will this affect the release of the next batch of consoles?

DCcharlie-No.
Marcmak-Yes.

O.k i might have forgotten a name or two but you know what??You'll never see these guys starting BS rumors, they are much more serious in their posting while the guys that have started this...insanity at GAF the last few days sound like 10 years old fanboys....

I've seen many of them drop hints before (though nothing as controversial as these). There are fanboys in the industry too, you know ;) With regards to johnny nighttrain, nintendo is actually his "company of choice" so to speak, so i don't think him saying this was borne out of that anyway.

I'd appreciate your point if they were being very vague, but specifically with regards to KoTOR, you gotta wonder if he'd risk his credibility to throw out something he knew to be false...we'll all know pretty soon if he was correct or not, probably next week. If he's wrong, he'll be "cast out" - along with the others who have corroborated, and they know that , so..
