*Rumors Spin-off* 360 & Blu Ray

I call bullocks on this rumor just like all the rest of the MS Blu Ray rumors. I can ALMOST get a stand alone drive for the price they are trying to sell it for, and by the time it hits the market you WILL be able to get them for that price.

There is no incentive for MS to do this. Now if they say they will increase their digital download offerings to compete against BR, thats a different topic.

Nothing to see here...move on.

I am undecided on this.

I think the device exists, but the question is whether and when MS intends to release it. They do need something to counter Blu-ray should adoption swing upwards significantly enough.

I don't think they need to do anything with the price diffrence right now. Perhaps they can add the bluray drive into the elite unit though. I really feel that they need to refresh the elite and most likely they will after this holiday but i don't know how much they need bluray. You can already get players for $250 and the rumor is $150 players for black friday. Next year I wouldn't be surprised if the cost of a stand alone is $200. The longer bluray is on the market the cheaper they players will retail for. Couple that the high price of the media and the recession going on in the states and I really don't see it as a must have.

Not this BR add on shit again. I swear, there are more anti MS/Sony fans out there wanting to see this happen just so they can say "told you so!" than people actually interested.

With standalone prices coming down this holiday season and the BR drive having no use for games, nothing good will come of this.

Bkilian,

MS is smarter than releasing this, right?!

Personally, I don't see how Microsoft have physical room for the JVM + gubbins in the console's firmware to support the Java-based layer that Bluray players need.

I believe the hd-dvd add on had ts own flash ram for tat purpose

Yes, I think it even showed up as a storage device in the dashboard as well.

Personally, I dont think this is a good idea for MS to do this now. I think it could actually draw attention to the value proposition of the PS3 since a Pro+this would probably be $450-ish.

!

yep saw one at Sams club yesterday (SONY) for $217... was very tempting but am not ready for that or to upgrade to a 1080p TV until I see the holiday deals.

I had one of the first-generation PS2s which supported DVD playback only after you copied a DVD player executable on the memory card, taking up ~2 of the 8 MBs there. I'm fairly certain they can fit anything they need for Blu-ray playback within 40-50 MB, and Arcades ship with a 256 MB memory card nowadays. (The older "Core" consoles don't have HDMI output and thus make less sense for Blu-ray playback - but you can buy a memory card for them too.) That, an the player executable on the drive itself too is an option.

I'm more worried about decoding performance - I've seen the 360 struggle with some h.264 1080p movies. Then again, the video playback code hasn't been updated for over a year, maybe they have managed to wring out more out of it...

So the BR news emerges again. MS just seem so undecided about an external BR drive that they are now willing to bring to the market.

A bluray add-on does not make sense anymore unless they can price it at/below 100$. Heck, ppl are talking about 150$ stand-alone Profile 1.1 players for black Friday. I think "being a Bluray player" advantage of PS3 will not even hold this xmas shopping season because of cost of players coming down fast and Sony's unwillingness to cut PS3 price.

So how much are profile 2.0 stand-alones? Black Friday prices are irreverent, most people don't stand in line to be one of twenty to buy something during one day only. The cheapest stand-alones are $300 right now, I doubt things will change much in the next two months.

I still think Sony should drop PS3 prices by $100 during the first week of Nov, right in time to ride positive LBP reviews and publicity.

I think you could see the house brands retailing at $200 considering sonys are at $300. An add on at $100 with a few free movies could sell , but i don't think it be huge and i don't think it be needed.

More the exception than the rule at this point but a friend of mine just bought a Sony s350 for $199 today. It wasnt a coupon or anything, just 'instant savings' online.
