Rift, Vive, and Virtual Reality

699 euro for me! Damn. At 399 I wouldn't have hesitated. Now I am going to want to wait.

Anybody an idea what the shipping rate is ? Bit strange they state excluding shipping, but they charge you for an amount without shipping it seems.

699 euros is bit steep. Curious what HTC/Valve and Sony will do now.

That $0 price point makes a little more sense now (and feels even better). I'd still have ordered if I had to pay, but that's definitely higher than most were expecting - especially when you factor in the Touch controllers that almost certainly will add another ~$150. Worrisome if this is indicative of what HTC/Vive are facing considering they're needing to make a tidy profit on their hardware sales on top of including a bigger hardware package.

Managed to preorder rift. Pretty expensive but I have a feeling vive will be even more expensive. There is room for sony to dominate on volume if their solution ends up being significantly cheaper.

I have to say I'm happy oculus is pushing the boundary on technology rather than trying to cheap out. In the long run I will enjoy better product more than if they had cheaped out here and there to get to better price poiint.

well its USD

be charged when your order ships.
Tax: $0.00
Shipping: $30.00

Estimated Total: $629.00

I pre-ordered one from Taiwan. Total is US$745 (shipping is US$96!). Also I don't understand why the price is suddenly US$50 more compared to the US...

Bundled cheap headphones, Xbone controller no matter what. What were they thinking?

Also I would say that if these are the sort of prices that have been batted around behind the scenes the past year, it makes a lot more sense why we haven't heard of any major commitment from Valve in terms of funding a wave of their own first party content. Neither of these devices are probably going to be selling more than 500k units each this year, so unless Valve is willing to eat development losses, it makes far more sense to just sit back and let the third party indies trickle out content.

Oculus answers the big Rift questions

As for the eventual price: the consumer version should come in similar to what DK2 costs now. "We want to stay in that $200-$400 price range," he states. "That could slide in either direction depending on scale, pre-orders, the components we end up using, business negotiations..."

"Whatever it is," Luckey adds, "it's going to be as cheap as possible." Mitchell nods: "That's really the goal."

Interview from late 2014.
As cheap as possible. Yeah right.

Well it still sold out.

Until they disclose exactly how many units they sold so far, "sold out" could mean they sold 200 units.

"Cheap" is relative. No one else has announced their prices yet. If their list price isn't justified then their competition will look even more attractive and people will be able to spend their money there. The price projections from several years ago really are no longer relevant because the product and market conditions have changed dramatically in that time.

With that price and that h/w requirement this thing isn't going to be relevant for a long time. And that's the problem, who wants to develop games specifically for luxury h/w that nobody is going to buy? Sony and Valve have the luxury of already owning IPs that could be translated on VR in some way, what does Facebook/Oculus have? Maybe they can include Facebook support day 1 in some way, i don't get it.

2016 was still going to be "Year 0" for VR regardless of whether the Rift was $300 or $600. The tech is not refined enough yet to deliver the sort of plug and play, high value per dollar experience that's generally expected by mainstream consumers. In some ways this might be a blessing in disguise as the price will keep the user base focused on the more forgiving enthusiasts and/or those with a lot of disposable income.

Worst oculus could have done is to come out with crappy product and have people hate and dismiss vr. This could still happen but I hope rift is good.

I feel there is pretty good range of products coming out. There is the cheap options of using your phone for vr. I would expect this to be the solution for masses. I personally much rather have slightly better oculus rift than the crappified version for 200$ less.

It remains to be seen how sony and htc will play the game. They might choose to fill in the gaps. My expectation for vr solutions ordered from cheapest to most expensive is

mobile vr
sony morpheus
oculus
htc vive

You might try out oculus at best buy and feel the same way you feel about that brand new lg 8k tv... Amazing, but I'll wait until the price is right. But perhaps that sparks your interest and you get that gearvr for now.

The hardware is literally an OLED screen, two lenses and plastic around it. They should at least release the option of buying the headset alone without all these extras at $349-400.
