Rift, Vive, and Virtual Reality

Cool, It'll be interesting to know what kind of experience you get with that. I'm in the same boat waiting for Pascal with a 670 which isn't massively faster than your GPU (by modern standards anyway).
yes they're quite close. I'll post pics here when the bundle arrives. I'm tied into nvidia because I bought into g-sync, otherwise I'd have a few more options available.

Palmer had mentioned in an interview a month or two ago that Kickstarter backers were going to potentially get something extra, but I figured that might mean getting a tshirt, extra game voucher from their store, or perhaps being put to the front of the pre-order queue. To get the actual kit for free seems unbelievable. I guess there's only something like ~7k DK1 backers so maybe it's not that big of a hit for Oculus to eat, but I'd still be really curious to hear what the internal conversations were like when that was proposed. Perhaps Palmer himself lobbied for this (or even paid for it), because it's hard to imagine the bean counters or market strategists being able to justify the expenditure over something else that could have sweetened the deal for a much larger pool of prospective buyers. A couple months ago I was figuring I'd possibly buy both HMDs (had the Vive launched on schedule), then decided on only Oculus, and now neither. lol. This is especially nice given the Canadian dollar right now o_O

I think it's really awesome that rifts are actually going out now and you're getting yours soon but I'm a bit confused. You backed the kickstarter and they're sending you the product you paid for right?

I Kickstarted 3 years ago and received a Oculus SDK 1.0. The worst of oculus sets.

That cost me 330 with shipping. That was the end of our arrangement.

I get an email asking me to clarify my reward today which was confusing. Turns out they will be sending out the oculus bundle to all SDK 1.0 backers free as charge for supporting the initial investment that got oculus off the floor.

I don't even need to pay shipping LOL. Too good!!!! I've been jumping up and down cause he CDN dollar is mad shit right now! Lol

Who better to extoll it's virtues than the original backers who are now all gooey eyed at Oculus for the freebie. The best advertising for VR is still going to be word of mouth at this stage. I think it's a great idea, just wish I'd have been a backer myself.

I guess...? I dunno, I sort of assumed that the vast majority of DK1 backers were likely to purchase the CV1 on launch anyways. The millions that this is going to cost them could have gone to more premium packaging, a $50 coupon for all DK2 buyers, etc and brought a much wider PR splash. That's sorta why I wonder if this was something Palmer dreamed up. When you have a net worth of some $700 million that's in large part owed to a successful Kickstarter launch, I could understand justifying a ~$5 million thank you. Facebook share holders? Not so much.

Wow, that's awesome! No wonder you're so happy!

I think it's a very wise business investment. Among these are the people who have helped make Oculus a thing, and it also covers a lot of small and big developers that have helped ensure software is available. Now they can spend the money on building more software (or buying a competitor's set ;) ). Either way, it's a great move.

Yeah, it's going to be software that makes or breaks VR. Also if you only care about short term profit you wouldn't be a Facebook shareholder anyway :)

wow 599.99 bit to rich for my blood. I preordered but will most likely cancel esp if the vibe is close in price and comes with room tracking.

Yeah. If I have that much money to spend on luxury, I would wait for vive price. If it's a bit higher, fuck it, I'm getting vive (room scale and seated tracking, MOTION CONTROL).

But I don't (my pc also bloody low spec), so I wait unpatiently for psvr.

Btw even if the pre order did not explode, rift already got lots of user base in consumer / developer due to the free for kickstarter program.

Price is a bit steep:

699 euro for me! Damn. At 399 I wouldn't have hesitated. Now I am going to want to wait.

$600 before taxes and shipping. In many European countries, this is definitely going towards close to 900€.

Good riddance. If it's such a premium product after all, I'll rather wait too see how Vive performs, or even StarVR.

StarVR seems really cool. One dedicated 1440p screen per eye and a 210º horizontal FOV.
If all else is equal, I'd probably pay €1200 for StarVR before paying 900€ for Occulus.
