Resistance: Fall of Man update! BIG READ , come inside!

Interesting I think is where Resistance does score very, very high in the IGN review - Lasting Appeal: 9.5. Gears scored a 7.5 here. Resistance really puts the PS3 on the online map prominently, and that's definitely a good thing. Resistance is far more a Halo 2 competitor in that respect than a Gears competitor, I think.

One thing I'm starting to wonder about - can you even compare ratings on different platforms? I mean I know people do, and some reviewers do, but others don't. I think you can, but you really shouldn't normally, or do both. I mean, if you'd do that then graphics on the Wii could never score a 10, or they'd have to have a certain artistic talent that is unique, but then the whole judging system becomes very muddled. I think you have to separate ratings per platform, and then you can occasionally put some games on different platforms head to head, regardless of their respective scores. Just take the best game (of a certain genre or in a certain quality) on different platforms, and compare them.

It's best not to when it comes to different platforms. For example it's not truly fair to compare PSP graphics to DS graphics. When I asked the Wii question earlier, it was more rhetorical as theres really no direct answer for it. From a reviewing standpoint for example, Zelda looks amazing compared to the rest of the Wii games, but compared to the PS3 and 360 it's not truely fair. But from a marketing/consumer standpoint, people will definately make those comparisons between platforms whether we think it's fair or not.

Yeah. So I think reviews should be platform specific, and then there should be separate features and buyers guides that compare gaming experiences across platforms, so they can also be meaningfully related to price, cost of ownership and so on.

That to me would count for a lot. I'd rather have a lower graphics score that'd I'd get more playtime out of, than vice versa, what with being a cheapskate and all!

That's why whole review scores aren't much use. Seeing a 9.5 Game A versus a 9.0 Game B, without knowing which one is stronger in the areas that matter most to you, doesn't make for a good selection process.

Hmmm... why don't people play the game first before they judge it ?

Because before we can judge it, we have to play it. And for many people, before they can play it, they have to buy it. And for many people, the decision on whether or not they buy it, is made through reading reviews.

And so we are discussing reviews. Clear? ;)

You mean these ?

OPM: 9
Famitsu: 8.25 (average of 9 / 8 / 8 / 8)
Dengeki-PS: 95 (average of 90 / 90 / 100 / 100)
IGN: 9.1 (Presentation=9.0 / Graphics=8.5 / Sound=8.5 / Gameplay=9.0 / Lasting
Appeal=9.5 )
Gamebrink: 9.25 (Gameplay=9.25 / Graphics=9.00 / Sound=9.00)

Looks like a solid FPS so far. But without playing through, at best we are talking about your/our perceptions of the game (or may be the review framework, or how well the marketing worked).

Since PS3 is out now, I was (and still am) hoping for real player comments (e.g., memorable moments, most difficult levels, toughest enemies, things that need practice to get right, ...) soon. :)

I know it's hard to believe, but some reviewers are actually 'real players' too. I used to review games myself, for a Dutch site. But of course it will be great to have opinions from trusted B3D forum visitors too. ;)

Theres a lot of detail and things going on at once with resistance, but I think gears has raised the bar. Thats not to say the graphics are not impressive for resistance. 8.5 sounds reasonable to me from their perspective.
Well, I'm sure Insomniac would've managed something more comparable to Gears graphics-wise if they took the same approach with onscreen characters.

But like Shifty pointed out, the lasting appeal would be the most important rating IMHO. For me, that's the difference between a rental and a must-buy!

You to each their own, I've played a dozen FPS exactly like this, it brings absolutely nothing new to the table. Maybe it is fun, but I'm getting a huge been there done that vibe from this game, also if the comments on the 1up show are anything to go by, it really is not that much fun.

God forbid I don't praise the almighty Resistance...

You never played the game but it's not fun  . If the comments by Eurogamer are anything to go by this game is better than that other repetitive linear cookie cutter game...

It makes me sad that we have to constantly compare games that aren't really similar, simply because there's a "console war." I agree with Scoob that the gameplay of Resistance looks very similar to many other FPS but that's based on watching videos not playing the game, obviously. Why this has anything to do with "that other game" is beyond me.

Certainly ! Good reviewers are also more neutral and level-headed when they dish out their scores. But they may have to work within the framework of their companies (=> article length restriction, short of time, need to balance review with advertising revenue, blah). I'm just looking for informal and insightful comments from people (including reviewers wearing gamer hat) who have played RoFM long enough. It's a bit early, but...

This and many RoFM threads were here long before PS3 was launched. I guess I'm just getting more curious while I plan for my own purchase.

Gamespot put up some pictures, they seem blurry to me or something though(maybe the down sizing?).

Sorry if this has been mentioned but does RFOM support voice chat while playing multiplayer (does any PS3 game for that matter)? IGN seem to rave about the multiplayer aspect of the game but fail to mention anything about communications, if not hopefully this will be something that could be implemented via an update.

Also what devices can be used for voice chat, any Bluetooth headset?

Yeah it supports voice chat. You can use *almost* any bluetooth headset you would find for cell phones. Sony is supposedly going to release a list of which ones are supported but havent yet. I say "almost any" because IGN tested 1 or 2 that did not work yet.

You can also use any USB headset like the one for the PS2.

I like the fact that in those recently posted pics...

the backpack straps looks rendered and doesn't look like a flat texture map!

I don't think FPSes are that big in Japan. And who knows, maybe Japanese FPS gamers don't visit Beyond3D's forums too often ;)
You should wait for the US launch, and then a couple of days extra to get those "genuine gamer" impressions. They'll come.

1up review

Pick up the controller for a shooter these days and you're bound to wind up drawing comparisons to others you've played. Not even shiny new hardware can help Resistance: Fall of Man for the PS3 escape a similar fate. In fact, it happens early and often. Walking through a war zone of bombed-out mid-20th century buildings rendered in soft sandy hues, wearing Army-issue olive drab with a trusty carbine in hand heavily channels Call of Duty 2 -- all of this before you even fire your first shot. That is but one of many similar shades that haunts the game to its very end. And though Resistance is an excellent experience throughout, it never manages to completely exorcise those influences and establish its own unique identity.

Is it just me or did Ted Price (Insomniac president) just put him self inside the game?

Lolol, there are ALOT of similarities with Ted Price aren't there?
