Red Dead Redemption

Wow. I don't know how many of you have seen this and it probably isn't anything for those of you who have played the game, but for those of us who haven't. Holy cow! The options that you have for what you can do in this game are phenomenal!

Interesting ! R* must have paid a lot of attention to the world creation.

Was wondering about the overlaps between open world games like RDR and MMOGs. The boundary seems to be blurring.

EDIT: Also, was waiting for this patch:
http://kotaku.com/5544100/rockstar-patches-red-dead-redemption-invisibility-glitch

"We have just deployed a fix that should address the issues some people have been experiencing in Red Dead Redemption online multiplayer. This fix should address a specific issue that was found where the player's multiplayer avatar, their horse or their weapons would occasionally not be visible in multiplayer games as well as an issue that some players were experiencing where they would lose connection to the various multiplayer modes."

...

To apply the patch, simply make sure you're signed into your consoles respected online services with a valid username before booting up the game. Both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions will update automatically.

The GTA series are not about a bunch of Boy Scouts either. Another pass for me but I have to admit the graphics look really great.
well.."mostly" you cannot openly draw your weapon & kill anybody here like you could in GTA.
You break the law ....you suffer the consequences. (there's a notoriety/karma level too)

That's another thing I hate about the game. You can't look at anyone with zoom .

Maybe, but when your outnumbered by many you don't just hide and watch everyone be picked off one by one.

This is true, but on the otherhand...in reality if you get outnumbered and the AI would react accordingly (either hide until you reach them - defensive, or rush at you - offensive) you wouldn't have a chance, right?!
But I agree with you that I would prefer them rushing at me as well, would increase the tension (maybe somthing similar to Uncharted, where the foes don't let you too much time to rest/hide )

Yes, it ends up just simple and more like a shooting gallery.

Ok, so i went with the PS3 version. My god the lighting is just incredible! I can`t recall another game with lighting as good as this. You literally feel as though you`re there! Framerate is very solid for me. Screen rez is fine for me, shimmering, pop up etc etc ...no problems. Blown out of proportions a bit i think.

Yeah definitely blown out of proportions, you just need to sit down and play it for awhile on a proper setup, not 2' away on a 24" LCD....

The game is a little buggy it seems, which is rather un-Rockstar-like, especially since they had 5 years of development. My wife was playing poker last night and one hand it said she got a red Queen high straight flush, and so did her opponent. Neither of them had anything close to that kind of hand.

Had a few issues with ghost people going crazy very briefly on occasion. Like a static person zooming around the tavern for a few seconds with no walk animation then disappearing.

The only bugs I've encountered were in free roam. They were the disappearing models everyone's been complaining about, and I saw a horse and rider spawn on the roof of a building.

Sharing some thoughts and interesting anecdotes:

Horse Riding
I'm now 8 hours into the game and--after switching over from 'horse relative' to 'camera relative' in the options menu--find that it's a really fun and awesome mechanic. It's a complete joy to use and I aint afraid to admit it. :)

Conversations
There are times where I really wish I could walk up to someone, anyone, and strike up a conversation.

Yesterday at the crack of dawn I was in Armadillo walking around soaking up the atmosphere and I just felt like find out more about the people in the town beyond the local newspaper. I spotted a few people walking around town wand was strongly hit with the urge to strike up a conversation. Like in GTA4 you can hit the B button when you're near someone to say a random one-liner (usually a greeting), but I want something beyond that (and totally optional and not a required by the game.) Nothing massive either, but just a little something deeper than what happens now.

I would like to hear what some of these people have to say about their lives in Armadillo. I want to hear how messed up life can be in living in 1911. I'm not looking for something as deep as Mass Effects conversation system either (although I have to admit I would probably like it).

Horse Collecting
The horse system is confusing and I feel like Rockstar has done a poor job explaining things to the player.

Within the first few hours of the game you're gifted with one of the fastest horses in the game. My immediate recation was "cool!", but after finding out that there were horse deeds in the store it completley deflated my desire to purchase them? It turns out that the golden horse you're gifted is only good until it dies. If it dies, then he's done for good.

The deed, as far as I understand it, allows you to select it (litterally, in the menu system) and whistle to summon it as much as you want. So in essence, once you have the dead you can unlimited access to that particular horse.

Plus, the wild horses running about in the wild are available for you to capture. Did you know that to basically own it, all you have to do it wrangle it and hitch it to a post in town and it will magically get a saddle when you come back to it? Why not force the player to ride it to the Corral over at MacFarlane ranch to turn it in and own it for good (like a deed)? You know, a 'collect them all' sort of thing that seems to be so popular these days. It would also be nice to have some kind of rating system for the horses outside of the store.

Dual Weild
I find it hard to beleive that this isnt an option, at least eventually, in the game. I heard an inverview with two guys from Rockstar San Diego on the Kotaku podcast and one of the questions posed to them was in regards to this. It's confirmed--it's not happening. What a strange, and poor, design decision.

Moral Ambiguity
I know this kind of moral compass mechanic is really tough to do in an open-world game but it's faults are at least worth discussing.

To me it seems like the next logical step for Rockstar, in terms of forwrad progress, is to make some a game with an adaptive gameplay feature. Let me explain.

I recall in GTA4 that, due to the unraveling of the main plot, my Niko was completely behaving in ways that were not relevent or applicable to the way I played the game. I was not running over people on the streets or passing through red lights (I know, I'm weird). My Niko would never perform some of the required kills in some of the missions. It's a mix up and it's sort of an "Uncanny Valley" in terms of gameplay.

The same thing is happening again in RDR. I mean, doesnt it seem odd that John Marston, even though he is in need of help, kills some (mostly) innocent people? For instance Nigel West Dickens, who is a swindler and a theif, is almost accosted by a mob until you step in and kill everyone. Not shout they off or threaten them--but kill them. If it were up to me, my John Marston, I would have tried to scare them off first.

There are players out there who, rightfully so and more power to them, would kill these guys. Absoutely that should be option, but that's exactly what I'm talking about--the option.

What it boils down to is Rockstar, in my opinion, might want to look at games already out there, like Mass Effect perhaps, that already have a system in place that adapts gameplay offering choice and effect to the player. What I dont want is for Rockstar to turn their games into 'Mass Redemtion' or 'Grand Theft Dragon'--find a middle ground so that it retains the Rockstar touch of personality.

Poker & Blackjack
For me, going out at night from time to time is fine, but I like to do the majority of my missions and side quests during the day. When night time hits I like to spend that time indoors making money. Last night I was playing a game and I was getting dealt greaet games (pocket Queens!) and raising the shit out of everyone. One by one the 4 guys at my table got up, mumbled something about the worst part of playing Poker is telling the wife where the money went and left. I was determined to break the game and make eveyrone bust out and, surely, earning some kind of acheivment for me feat. I did it and nothing happened. I dont consider myself an acheivement whore, but I do appreciate the acheivement that marks certain feats in games and this felt like a missed opportunity. Not a big deal in the end.

"New Items Have Been Unlocked In The Store"
Really? Where? What? Each time I see this, and it seems like it happens after every mission I do, I trot over to the Armadillo and...nothing new is showing up. What? Well where is the new stuff? It might be nice to tell me what was unlocked, or at the least where it unlocked. It seems a little pointless to tell me something new has shown up but not where.

"Help me PLEASE!"
When I first started the game I was tricked into helping a seemingly poor and innocently woman whos carriage had broken down. "Help me PLEASE!" she screamed as she waved a white handkerchief in the air. I quickly hopped off my horse to see what the problem was and was immediately attacked by 4 bandits. I killed them without an issue and left the woman alive but bound.

This leads me to two thoughts.

Once bound I rode all the way to Armadillo, walked into the sheriffs office and laid her down before him like a proud puppy for payment and...nothing happened. I turns out you can do nothing with her. What? So I rode over to the nearest train track and left here there. :)

Also, the unfortunate thing about the cool trick was that, now, whenever I see someone stranded I know it's a ploy to lure me in. That whole situation is only good for once. I wish they would have found a way to make it real and only sometimes a trick.

Anywho, just some random thoughts I have been having that I thought I would share.

I felt the same thing since I started. I was going up to people expecting some kind of interaction button, but you can't interact with anyone unless they are mission spawned.

Horse Collecting

So the stallion you get to keep during one of the first missions is the best horse you can get? Doesn't really do much for working on buying the other horses. Why would I want to buy a sickly slow horse? So I can own them all?

One of the outfits require you to beat everyone at the table to complete one of the requirements.

My dream game:

Red Dead Redemption + more environmental objects with physics + destructibility of Bad Company 2 + conversation system of Mass Effect 2 + better AI + more multi-player options and content

Even if the graphics were exactly the same, I'd be absolutely thrilled. Maybe some of that will make GTA5, whenever it comes out?

It's one of the best you can get, but it's got one life. The deed allows you to respawn the horse.

Nice!

yep

was thinking of this last night... I want a visible representation of each horse that I can own, their attributes. I want to own the horse for good after I break it and have each type stabled in my own stable to have choices of rides (like a garage in an auto game) :p
