Radeon 9800 "XT" Clues

Mephisto, that report is best left to Dave as he was the one asking most of the questions . I think that was about the calmest bit of information about the meeting.

Well this makes sense, its been ATi's publically stated desire to push forwards with many top range products. I'm sure ATi would like to have the 9600pro at the low end then up from there.
It worked on the GF4 Ti line for Nvidia and it can work well for ATi, especially if they pump out a bazillion R3xx cores.

I believe it all depends on how strong the next next ATI card is (what should have been the R400).

An August announcement and release in September is what I expect - ATI are nowhere near as aggressive in core/mem speeds like NVIDIA are for various reasons already mentioned.

I believe ATI needs to go for the jugular again to create any kind of splash otherwise there will be apathy to a product that is merely "20%" faster than their previous card. If ATI can afford (in their eyes) to wait for R400 (or whatever it is) then I expect 9800XT to be a letdown for some WRT clockspeeds.

Well the problem of course is that you have 2 HUGE, extremely high profile releases coming this fall, at least one of which is going to feature predominantly in hardware reviews for the next several years. Both IHVs understand the importance, right or wrong, of being 'the best platform' for these releases.

I would guess, that will be R360 announcement (R360 is just a higher clocked R350, around 425/400 or something like that).

As for R390 (420/Loci or whatever), i'm guessing it'll be announced later this year, probably around same time as the announcement of NV40 (end of november for now, i believe). It'll be 0,13 for sure but now i don't know any specs further than this...

BTW, there's some indications, that NV35U as we know it, might not be the fastest NV35 when R360 will be announced...

Oh that's new. Same speed as the defunct 5800U would be nice. Perhaps we will indeed find that next chip will use the new DDR-2 chips... Any other guess?

PS: And the name? 5900 mega super ultra?

Respun with GDDR2 (2nd gen maybe) is a possibility. Would sit quite nicely with the NV36.

RV360 and RV360 aren't much of a big deal - August seems a little late. I agree that we'll most likely see Loci at least announced around the time of Comdex.

Damn, things are getting crazy.

Agreed. It should be out ASAP, probably in July - otherwise it could be DOA by Loci's arrival in November.

Yeah. ATI is not gonna miss the christmas fever... ;)

now just why would ATi call it "R360" if it's just a speedbump? The put out multiple speed R300's. I would think that a die shrink (thus requiring the physical architecture to be slightly different as well) would warrant a small stepping, would you not? Then, of course, it would probably be better to call it a 9900 though...

There are a lot of good reasons to use the name "Radeon 9900" for R360 - highest denomination within this generation, correlates with "5900", is representative of a small improvement over 9800 etc etc.

They also seem like pretty good reasons why it would *not* be appropriate for Loci - it doesn't suggest a next generation product (which Loci essentially isn't, but has to be marketed as such in order to succeed), won't bear any similarity whatsoever to the name nVidia choose for NV40, should be a big improvement over the R350/R360 etc etc. Something like "Radeon Jit-Pong Moulinex Uber-Bastitizor GTS Kompressor" would be much more appropriate.

Assuming they will use the name "9900" at one stage or another, R360 seems by far the more suitable candidate. That is, unless they have *another* high-end ASIC planned for launch before year's end which I very much doubt.

MuFu.

P.S. When things get boring we always start talking about names...

RV250->9000 for 4x AGP.
RV280->"9000" for 8x AGP, possibly some process related tweaks.

The numbers are for convenience of reference, probably more internal "marketing" (maintaining focus on the goals of the product) than enthusiast marketing. However, with information on these things being shared outside the company (OEMs, etc), the latter is probably considered somewhat as well.

Yes, I imagine this being quite important if they are going to produce it alongside R350 and market it as a different product.

All R300's were announced in one day. And R360 is a new revision of R350, I suppose, which is coming to market almost 6 months later than R350.

Perhaps. I really think we'll only see "R400" in an official capacity now. None of this R390/R420/Loci nonsense. :p
Does it matter how you call it? It'll still be based on good old R300 core, even if they call it "R400" now...

Some "out-of-the-loop" people over at Rage3D fell for it, and thought it was new info. :-?
Thats mean! :devilish:

Hmm? "out-of-the-loop" wasn't an insult, it just meant that they didn't know about the discussion that had already occurred and mistakenly thought the info at the Inquirer was new. Did you think my ":-?" was aimed at them falling for it? I'm sorry, I can see how it can be taken that way, but I really have no desire to blame anyone but the Inquirer for their dedication to portraying themselves as knowledgeable. Extremely often, they do it by parroting what other people have discussed, and completely omitting any recognition that the source is a public forum. Therefore  :-?
