Radeon 8500 OpenGL Driver Performance

Has anyone else noticed a startling increase in OpenGL driver performance on the Radeon recently?

I've not been using it for a little while due to the various reviews however I plugged it back in recently to do some performance numbers against the Wildcat and there is a shocking increase in performance in RtCW from the review I run only a couple of months ago - we're looking at +20FPS in 1600x1200, which is a pretty good increase by any means. It would certianly seem that the texture thrashing bug was quite an issue because there seemed to be no hard-disk accessing at all with these drivers unlike the ones used for the Radeon 8500 review. It seems that ATI are doing some pretty good work in this area recently.

However, they have more work to do if Radeon were to be used in a professional environment - I'm currently running SPECviewperf 7.0 on it and its now on it 4'th hour of rendering one of the demos, and its only 56 frames in! Still, at least its not just completely failing.

Yes, the Radeon boards have been increasing in GL proformance pretty steadily since it's release. ATI just released new drivers on their web site recently.

The specViewperf results are interesting, though it might not really be a driver issue for the Radeon, as its drivers are tuned for games. The Fire GL 8800's drivers are tuned for professional apps, and it would be more "fair" to see how it does on the same test.

Is this particular demo designed to test a specific aspect of the card?
