PSX Details

I too have a PS2 and compared with my Toshiba DVD player (£300RRP)+component cables it's image quality is quite shocking using the S-video (haven't got RGB cables), as is the sound quality (very thin and narrow (using optical digital cable). And some DVD's even loose the audio-video sync halfway through the movie. BTW I used my PS2 as a DVD player for nearly 2 years.

Edit: I'm not saying the PS2 is poor DVD playback for the price, but if you're paying $700 (about £500) then the quality is unacceptable i my opinion.

Sorry if I am being ignorant.. this is the PSX as in, the GBA Killer PSX??

You're thinking of the PSP(PlayStation Portable).

Tommy McClain

Aigh, thanks for setting me straight on that.. so many names got thrown around I got confused.. they really need to get more names.. I still call the original Playstation the PSX.

IN FACT, WHAT THEY SAID IS THAT: (sorry about the caps)

the games will be the same as on PS2, while DVD playback will be the same as on standard DVD players (whatever it means, it could mean "DVD players of the same price range" but somehow i dont think so)

does anyone know whether it supports progressive scan DVD playback? it should, since newer ps2's do...

PS2 playback is a software issue. It's not exactly uncommon for market segmentation to be done on what are essentially equivalent pieces of hardware running different grade of utility software/drivers.

for the price, i think PS2 DVD playback is pretty deecnt. especially if u use full RGB cables. of course if u're using the cables that come in the box, then EVERYTHING coming out of ur ps2 will look like crap...

i'm pretty sure PSX will have a much better DVD playback than a gaming console that came out almost 3 years ago... come on guys give Sony a bit more credit jeeez...

My PAL PS2 using the more recent DVD player software release (not the newest hardware revision with built-in IR etc) looks just fine. Nothing lacking at all, colors are vivid, gradients are smooth, sharpness is great.

TV is a Sony Trinitron.

as is the sound quality (very thin and narrow (using optical digital cable).

...Which makes me think you're just plain biased and hearing/seeing stuff that isn't there, because optical digital out just passes the already encoded audio straight out of the machine without touching it at all!

So what you say about "thin" and "narrow" sound is quite frankly nothing but bullcrap.

And some DVD's even loose the audio-video sync halfway through the movie.

With all the titles I've run on my machine, that has NEVER happened.

EVER.

Bit of a leap, judging the PSXes playback without even having seen the machine in action?

*G*

In all the DVD playback comparison tests between xbox and PS2 I have read, PS2, when hooked up with RPG cable, has won, hands down, every time.

Rocket Propelled Grenade cables huh?

Personal preference, but I prefer my Xbox for DVD playback over my PS2. I suppose they are comparable in image quality (IMO slight edge to XB), but the Xbox drive is alot quieter for one.

Get a component cable for your PS2. The S-video output of the PS2 is horrid. But, with component, my PS2 DVD output is about as good as my Pioneer Elite stand-alone player.

Depends on how old the machine is. Some of the early versions had quite noisy drives, but it has gotten a lot better .The same on xbox

Both consoles give me a noisy mess (relative to my acceptable standard) playing DVD, X-BOX is worse compared to the PS2 from my experience, but I am using that DVD X2 player than the official remote DVD pack, it may be the problem.

The DVD playback in new PS2 have progressive output, PSX should also be providing that, and on top of digital processing during decoding, the other major thing that determines the video output is the video encoder, the analog components, analog and power circuit design, PCB layout and quality of the power supply (not meant to be exhaustive).

Things may be the same when they are still in the digital domain, but when things go into the analog domain, you will see vastly different performance with different implementations.

A really good quote (IMO) "Digital is engineering, Analog is art".

And BTW, it should have been mentioned more than one time before, that little D-port besides the right audio outputs is where you will get component video output.

edit: add some clarifications

Good post as usual Chry

Here's what I find interesting, and infact I would love to see this for PS3.

The machine is slightly raised on small legs so that the controller wires can pass under the console and reach toward the front.

Snazzy. Although I can see it would be a problem if you constantly switched controllers or something.

As for it's Design? It looks really slick. The unit is cheap at 700 dollars, compared to units of the same similar function.

They seem to mention the "network" quite a bit, be awesome if it had basic web TV type functions. A simple web browser would work.

No USB 2.0 and no IEEE 1394/Firewire....which means it can't digitally transfer MiniDVs or any digital video format to DVDs...MAJOR MISTAKE...

BTW that DVD recorder drive better be bullet proof because it'll be doing triple duty.

Ooh- good point, DVD burners like to fail when you actually USE them frequently... my school's technology dude has never had a DVD burner (nor CD burner) last him more than ~6 months...

hmmm...funny...from my OXP, most net reviews and users' comments, i swear it is the other way around...Xbox seems to be able to produce a more "visible" picture than PS2 dvd playback..

I agree! Especially the last part! 8)
I used to love convergence, but when i look at the numerous complaints regarding Ps2 drive...i think it is better to keep things separate and hardy.
