New PSX details were unveiled at CEATEC 2003.

There are going to be two models:

160GB Version, 79800YEN / ~€615 / ~US$715

product_2_1.jpg

250GB Version, 99800YEN / ~€770 / ~US$900

more details will follow soon ...

Wow, ~$715?! That's cheaper than I thought! I figured $500 would have been "you'd be a moron to pass this up unless all you wanted was a PS2", $600-700 range would be highly desirable and "you'd be stupid to pass this up if you're looking for a set-top burner and/or good PVR", but was assuming in the $800-900 range somewhere, which kicks things a little too rich.

Now, of course, the main thing is waiting to see that the hardware is solid. ;)

Know if the TV Guide listings for the PVR functionality are free--no subscription price? I was led to believe they were going to be. (And that certainly gives a leg up over TiVo and such.

The ~€ 700-800 price is very attractive (if that will be the final price in EU, which I doubt), considering all the features.
I've been waiting to purchase a recordable DVD (+HDD) but been waiting for what the PSX brings.
Only if you want to get the most out of recordable DVD's (+HDD) one does need to have a digital TV tuner, otherwise a lot of the main attraction (IQ to me) of DVD R is lost.
Still, I don't think we'll see even VCR's with built in Digi TV tuners for many years.

Initially, the system will not support recording to the DVD+RW format, but future upgrades downloadable via the system's network adapter, are expected to add this support. Users will be able to dub between DVDs at a rate of 24x.

In terms of gaming functionality, the PSX is equivalent to a PS2 unit that's been equipped with Sony's broadband adapter and hard disk. You'll be able to play games Online, download new content and of course play Offline titles as you please. Games can be played while recording is going on in the background. This includes titles like Final Fantasy XI that are played after having been installed to the hard disk.

well, it could be a bit smaller, but the Xbox just looks too cheap and bulky compared to this, regardless of the PSXs size. This would fit in well together with my Hifi equipment... :D

Then again, I hope PS3 will have some very stylish, roundish, hi-tech design... sleak and elegent. Perhaps silver looking (reflective surface) and hopefully vertically!

The PSX is BIG, sure, but damn, it's stylish too! Heh, it looks like it's 4 times the volume of a gamecube... :)

Anyway, the white color looks damn nice. Too bad it's horribly expensive as well.

Expensive for a game console, yes.
But imo, for a DVD+big HDD PVR it is quite cheap (if the price range holds when it comes to market here in EU).
At least much cheaper than anything comparable currently on market.

Eek!
$700 and DVD playback quality of the PS2!

Hope they sort that out before the european launch ...(if there is one).

There's nothing wrong with the DVD playback quality of a PS2. I've watched many titles, it looks excellent.
