PSP - is it worth it?

Unless 222mhz is the true clock speed and then we are seeing the true power of the system expressed .

It was confirmed in last week's Edge magazine, with Ridge Racers' associate producer Hideo Teramoto, that Ridge Racers was running underclocked and that future Namco titles will be using the maximum 333 MHz speed.

I don't know more.... :)

If you want one, and need one, u will buy one and be very happy with it. If not, your loss.

People who don't have a use for the extra functions will not be at a loss. ;)

Nick just said he doesn't have a use for the MP3 feature because he has an iPod and that's exactly what I've been saying. Yes people living under a rock may use it has a MP3 player, but they still need to buy expensive MS. It's great that some people don't mind buying all this extra stuff that cost money to satisfy their specific needs, but most people don't have a house full of SONY products. ;)

I have a $50 1GB SD card that I use with a CANON digital camera that is useless with a PSP. I can spend a fortune on a 1GB MS just to watch movies OTG on a PSP, but it doesn't make much sense not just for me but for a lot of people. Sure there are a handful of people that may have use for the extra features, but that's always the case for every piece of electronic equipment that's ever existed, doesn't mean it's the best thing since sliced bread. BTW surfing the internet on that thing will be like surfing the internet with a keyboard, but I'm sure there will be some people who will think it's the best thing since sliced bread, like those who never had an internet connection. There's always two sides to a coin, but if you prefer to only see one side then just glue it to your eyeball.

Actually, mister, i thought my post was rather sedated (probably cause i'm on valium but that's another story) and in no way a one-sided comment, but to be honest i'm a bit too... err... sleepy to discuss with you, so you win, PC-Engine.

*Applause*

we shall see , There is still no game running higher and edge magazine doesn't exactly have the best reputation anymore

heh, I wonder how many people will jump out of a window once they find out that the PSP will indeed be running at 333 MHz. Talking about grasping at straws... sheesh.

There's no reason to believe that the hard limit is lower than the stated 333 MHz and that the lower clock limit isn't used to force devs to maximize lower clock speeds and tackle the battery time issue now at its most crucial point in life (launch, beginning stage of a new product).

Background colour changes every month?????? Mine has been yellow all this time... and thats 3 months?

Maybe its because of the Japanese version?

Anyone has any comments?

Maybe it's because you dropped it. Twice!

Just kidding. I really don't know the answer.

Good luck. And take care of that thing! :p

Seems like there are a few psp owners in this thread without RR. You guys really ought to pick it up, as it is by far the best game for the PSP right now imo.

There is no reason to believe its not because the chips are only capable of 222mhz .

As for battery time , it will only get worse if they bump it up to 333mhz (if they can ) Unless sony plans on replacing all the psps its sold so far and into the future with new batterys or with more energy efficent chips .

Unless you don't mind getting screwed over ?

That wouldnt be getting screwed over. People got the product they were advertised.

if the psps presently in customers' hands cannot achieve 333 at some point in the future then no, the people did not get the advertised product. go check psp specs on playstation.com, "1 - 333MHz".

AFAIK, there would be no firmware update needed. The 222Mhz lock is in the devkit. Edge magazine's reputability has really nothing to do with it, as it's not a rumor they printed. It's rather whether or not the developer of Ridge Racers is credible or not, as it's an interview with him. Seeing that these people had access to devkits more and earlier than anyone else, it's as much of a confirmation as we can get outside of interviewing Sony engineers themselves.

Thank you, marconelly! I was hoping someone would try to clear this up. The, ah, "Nintendo constituent" seems pretty vocal on this subject. :?

FYI, 222 falls inbetween 1-333.

 That did make me laugh :devilish:

I and many others believe the Ridge Racer's developer statement. What proof do we have to disprove it. Its obvious that their game is one of if not the prettiest game on the PSP handheld so far. 2nd to 3rd gen PSP games will really show what the PSP is all about.

In regards to the question on why this hasn't done before, I would say that it has. The Turbo Express, Lynx, Gamegear, and to a less extent the Gameboy were all more or less graphically equal to the previous generation, (in TE and GG, they WERE the previous generation). I think, though, that right after that generation you first saw the FMV and then the 3D explosion. With FMV, storage space was a problem to replicate on a portable device. With 3D, it's taken off so fast that it took more than a few years for portables to even begin to implement it, much less bring it up to decent levels.

ok, i admit the TE and GG are blank spots in my book, so i should educate myself a bit on them. still, regarding the fast taking off of 3d: we're not talking '94 here, but more like 2001-03, when 3d was well established, and power-efficient hw readily available.

I've not looked a the screen for days as when I use it, its for music only and because the romote (hope Sony or a 3rd party brings something out better!!) can activate the device. I checked it before bed last night and its PINK!!!! :p

I think it changes quarterly as I swear it was yellow for months... I'll test it out later tonight by chaning the clock.
