PSP - is it worth it?

so 18 in 4 months compared to 16 in roughly a week...great point

So you think PSP developers made all these games in a week PSP has been out in the US? :) PSP has been out in Japan for the same amount of time as DS so its not suprising that its game development is at a similar stage to DS's. Just because Sony held back PSP's US launch to wait for more stock doesn't make its current library of games any more impressive then if it had released in December with few games and worked its way up to its current library of 16 games. Then again either way it doesn't change his point. He just corrected someone who said PSP had more games out. No matter how you spin it he's correct.

i didnt say he was wrong. he is correct. in a few weeks the PSP will surpass the DS in available software. is that due to the fact that Sony held back the PSP launch or Nintendo rushing the DS :?: lets not deny the fact that the DS software flow is pure crap right now. anyways im not gunna get into any DS vs PSP stuff.

getting movies onto the system could have been alot more inovative for the casual consumer.for those who understand computers its a piece of cake. but i can see moms and little timmys having a fit. i already have 4 mpeg4 converting converting programs because not one of them works perfectly on my comp. watching movies on the system is cool right now but i dont see myself doing it that often in the long run.

Well you did question how worthwhile his comment was, but whatever its not important I suppose.

in a few weeks the PSP will surpass the DS in available software

In the next 2 months PSP is scheduled to get 20 new games and DS is scheduled to get 17 new games. So yeah that would put PSP 1 game ahead. Its not an astronomical difference though. We'll see how things stand after E3.

I say NOT WORHT NOW.

I know the pressure hype and novelty is strong now, i feel too! but you should wait at least end year. i never recomend sony launch hardware. and no garentee psp will have large successful softwares.

unless u have speical plans as darkblu said, or full of cash...

but u already order so...cancel? u must lean back n think in dark room, why i DESPARATELY need psp NOW, when i KNOW sony WILL have better bug/quality squashing revisions, no more premium price lil later and better judge on how psp sales success with possible major original games, less rework ports?

dont forget psp-hd coming.....

i have one , and love it.
if you are into racers: try RidgeRacers. it has all the tracks of all the racers except i think from RR V .
i'm waiting still for my wipeout to import from usa

the battery is NOT horrible, a play sometimes an hour a day . so an average of 4-6 hours depending what you do is NOT horrible for me.
i dunno, some of you guys play 5 hours straight on a portable.?
when you see the screen quality , viewing angle and clarity you will love it.
there are already very good launchgames out and more to come, why wait?

I think the PSP is friggin incredible. Sadly, however, I don't own one and though I do plan on purchasing it eventually, I think I'll manage without it for the time being. Hopefully memorystick prices will be much lower and memorystick capacities will be much higher by this time next year.

I have one on its way. Just prior to its launch I was very neutral on PSP - I easily saw myself waiting till maybe the end of the year before picking one up. However, the combination of a surprising lineup + online play + unexpected ebay bargains = my picking one up over the weekend. Can't wait to get it!

I never cared for portable gaming and never dreamed I'd ever get into it...

But man, do I have the lust for PSP! I definitely plan on getting one, along with Wipeout Pure. The thing is just too beautiful to resist!

Damn, this device is going to attract thousands of people who, like me, thought portable games were for kids - or at least, too dumbed down to be taken seriously.

I still can't believe I want a portable game player, and I still can't believe how sweet and sexy the PSP is...

How surprising coming from you, Chap.

And u're telling zurich to cancel his order? What planet r u from?!

Let him have fun! You should too.

Actually I agree with some of what Chap said. PSP seems like the kind of thing that a lot of people will buy because they think it "just looks so cool and sexy!". But then, after gawking at it for a few hours, they realise its not a peice of jewelry its a games system. Don't get me wrong, its a very good games system. Just make sure that your buying it on its merits as a games system and not because it looks cool. Resist the shiny sexiness and, as chap says, sit down in a dark room for 20 minutes and have a serious think "why do I want a PSP?, do I really want it right now or is it just the hype and look of the system making me want it?". Think about its games and its features and nothing else, and if you then decide its worth the $250 then buy it.

To show I'm not trying to bash PSP I'll relate this to a Nintendo product :) I bought a GBA-SP last year, because I just wanted it. Didn't really think much about why, it just looked great and called out to me "buy me". So I bought it, but after the novelty had warn off I realised that I really didn't want it that much.. Luckily it only cost £60, the PSP costs $250, so think long and hard.

I have had one for the last three months, and it's been getting a lot playtime from me. More than PS2 actually. Zurich, since you ordered Wipeout and Lumines, I think Ridge Racer should be your next purchase. Those three games are probably the best three choices on PSP right now.

Oh, and sitting in a dark room over a $250 device that plays games and media? Give me a break, it's not a life and death decision you are making. Why would you want to suck the fun out of it? Just buy it and enjoy it.

Well that's fine if your on the kind of income were $300 (with a game) is just a throw away thing, but not everyone is. I just meant if someone is wondering if they should biy one or not then my advice is to think about the important aspects of the device. So consider the games, why you want it from a functional point of view and ignore the shiny shine. Make sure your buying it for the right reasons and you can't go wrong.

Did you buy your DS for the right reasons? ;)

I'm pretty much just buying it for Lumines, actually. That, and a couple of friends are picking up PSPs so it should be pretty fun multiplayer.

What are the right reasons again? Don't get me wrong, I think the PSP launch software is fantastic, but half my electronics were knee jerk gadgety purchases, and I very much enjoy toys on that level.

What kinda high horse is this guy on! heh

Did you buy your DS for the right reasons?

Yep, DS isn't super sexy and shiny though and costs a lot less. So the decision wasn't as difficult to make. I only sat in a dark room deliberating it for 10 minutes instead of 20

Gurgi

I assume your talking about me? Quite clearly my advice wasn't meant for gadget freaks, but for normal gamers. Most people don't want a house full of stuff that they liked the look of once, spent a small fortune on, and then got bored of after an hour. Hence the advice to buy something based on its more tangible qualities, rather then its aesthetics (PSP has plenty of tangible qualities of course).

BTW how can you possibly utter the line "What kinda high horse is this guy on! heh"? Considering your views on game copyright my horse could be 15 feet tall and smoking a joint and I can guarentee yours would still be higher :)

I think getting a gaming device just for one game that you really like is worth it. If you like, just look at $/h that you'll spend on it.
