PSP Impressions

Here's a couple of answers I got from a happy new owner of a PSP (DCharlie)

Q: When playing Ridge Racers, do you notice that the game is running in 16bit color? Basically, is there any dithering visible or perhaps some color banding?

A: I don't see any dithering/banding.

Q: What's the image quality like in general? Any shimmering, jaggies, stuff like that?"

A: In ridge, there is a very slight bluring when cars move - i cant figure out 100% if that is by design (there is heavy blur when you activate nitro) or a display issue, but i think it's a design choice.

Q: How does analog nub feel like in Ridge Racers?"

A: Feels good, but it did take a little time to adjust to it.

Q: That Chinese guy said the quality of sound from PSP was even better than from his Ipod. What's your take on this? (talking about the sound through the headphones, of course)"

A: The problem with the Ipod is it's packaged with really crappy headphones, so not sure if that's taken into account. But yes, the sound quality from the PSP via headphones is really REALLY nice. I've only ever used my Ipod with stock headphones, and it does sound pretty crappy at times, so i can see why people would make the quality distinction.

Q: How warm does PSP get after you play it for an hour or so?

A: it didn't - or at least i didn't notice.

Agreed, however, like I said being 1" wider makes it less pocketable. Why somebody would not aknowledge this is baffling.
Well, I probably wouldn't keep neither in my front or back pants pocket. They are both just too thick (DS especially) without even going into other measurements. However, they both seem fine for jacket or coat pockets.

PSP is wider than DS, but it's shorter, thinner and lighter (slightly). Also, less voluminous, and has a lot less frontal surface than DS in it's opened state. What's so difficult to understand about this? (talking to both sides arguing about what's width and what's height)

i was just posting that for his information. i dont understand how someone can argue about the dimensions of something when he cant tell the difference between length and width.

pc-engine. if you know the lengh of something, which HAS to be the greater dimension, then you dont AGAIN measure that dimension for width. :rolleyes:

Do you enjoy arguing about definitions while ignoring the the meat of the argument? :LOL:

Let me ask you a question using your defintion then. Is PSP 1" longer than NDS? Yes or no? Thank you.

I have a NDS and I keep it in my front pocket when carrying it with me and my pants are not baggy. PSP would force me to hold it instead. The reviews so far seem to point in that direction.

i dont enjoy argueing about definitions, but its impossible to argue with someone when he doesn't know the definitions of the words he's trying to use.

yep, PSP is 1" longer. ive stuck a DS in both my coat pocket and my pants pocket. adding 1" to the length would not make a difference in my particular pockets. also i carry a backpack to work and to school. both would fit in there too. NEITHER would fit well in my pants if i were sitting down though, they're both too long. i carry my cell phone in my pants, but i take it out when im sitting at my desk because its just uncomfortable...and its MUCH smaller than the PSP or the DS.

It is common practice to refer to the width of something as directionally from Left to Right from the the point of reference eg. if you're holding a PSP like you're supposed to, width would be from left to right not top to bottom. Depth is used the exact same way depending on the orientation of the object you're measuring.

Width = along X axis
Height = along Y axis
Depth = along Z axis

I'll just stop right there...

Nice selective quoting to try to prove a shaky point. The full quote isn't so kind to your PSP vs DS size argument:

He says NDS is bulky which it is. He didn't say anything about it being not pocketable.

Comparing the same venue (Yodobashi in west Shinjuku) for the NDS launch and the PSP launch...
the demands for the NDS and the PSP are like 1 : 10+

The NDS line

The PSP line

True but preorders for NDS was around 2 million, so there's reason why people didn't need to wait in line. Also NDS sold 240K units the first day so that picture doesn't really tell you what the demand for NDS is relative to PSP. What it does tell you is that a lot of NDS preorders were pickup later and not on the first day. How many PSP units were sold on the first day? ;)

This thread amusingly has too many distorted comparisons using pictures that don't really tell the whole story.

Definately true.

Both will sell well so there's little need for either fan boy camp to be worried.

I think IGN said that all the 200K units were sold in the first couple of hours after the stores got opened.

PSP is going for up to $800-900 on Ebay now.

More DSes sold on the first day in Japan than PSP's were shipped, if I'm not mistaken. :LOL:

Well the PSP supply is capped as you know :p BUT the additional production has been already decided apprently based on the launch reaction.
Pictures tell more than words :LOL:

So do you like it FAT on SLIM!

Just a reminder that the screen on the PSP is Coated with that TDK blabla chemical that should make it scratch proof. And i think we all saw the pictures of those plastic shields that was on the E3(?) display?

One thing that suprised me was the brightness, it looks like you can turn down the brightness level on the PSP to a DS level and save battery time without any problem.

3 pages of arguments over what is biggest, i'm surprised that PC-Engine is involoved :rolleyes:

I checked the IGN site and they said that by 10:30 most of the stores in their area had sold out which wasn't really a couple of hours, but yeah it seems the shortage forced a lot of people to buy them up pretty quickly. When is the next shipment due?

Holy crap, will you people get a grip with the size semantics arguement?

With the PSP you'd need a deeper pocket, and with the DS you're going to need a looser pocket/pants to actually stick them in there comfortably. Realistically, even though the PSP is thinner-but-not-longer you'd also have to add in the extra size of soft case, as I can't imagine ANYONE who'd want to stick that screen in their pocket next to their car keys! :oops: ...and that pretty much catches the rest of its dimensions up to the DS, not to mention adding even more to its length.

Regardless, I haven't yet met someone who wants to tool around with the DS in their pocket either. It's thick, heavy, still pretty long, and is stylish enough that people want to keep the case from getting scratched too. Add a soft case to THAT and...?

Basically, we have two machines that people are rarely going to stick in their pockets for any period of time. Jacket pockets, sure, and perhaps with soft cases belt clipped... That, or they'll simply carry around the small carrying case that will fit all the gear they want.

The GBA-SP was tiny, like, and cheap enough to just sit in your pocket and let you pluck it out to play your favorite game when you're bored. Both the DS and the PSP are hampered by being "gaming experiences" right now. Playing lots of different games and wanting all your cool peripherals around... Heck, people will be showing them off! For the time being neither is a "if you're bored" device.

People certainly toss portables in their pockets--even expensive ones. But cell phones are universal and "must be handy" devices, PDA's typically very light, small, and with a rugged exterior... iPods get less pocket play, but then they're status. ;) But the DS and PSP are pretty much going to fail the pocketing test, and I imagine the GBA2 and whatever "real gaming portables" to follow will as well.

But then, you'll always have your SP around. ;)

Notice how those PSP screens are dimmed down (actually dimmer than NDS) looking nowhere near those other previous glamour shots. :LOL:

Oh please will you just stop trolling :rolleyes: You know damn well, that LCD screen brightness and contrast depend on the viewing angle...

EDIT: same goes for the DS & PSP shots showing the DS at an unfortunate angle
