PSP Impressions

How does that fit with IGN?
That info is taken from IGN. They revised their initial article saying that there are no three loading segments when you run RR, but rather two (the bootup, and before the race starts)

The guy who measured the UMD video playing time to be 4:20 at max brightness seems valid. He has videos of his PSP playing the UMD video, and also his own video clips that he encoded into MPEG4 and put on the memory stick.

He also made a comment that he really likes the audio quality of PSP, and that MP3s sound even better than on his iPod.

There are no battery times for games, as there are no games being sold yet. Games IGN is playing are on the unit attached to a booth in some exhibition building in Japan, and the PSPs there are AC powered.

Well i figure playing RR PSP should be good for 3h then? Surely the additional processing power will have a greater impact on battery life than the constant spinning of the drive (at probably low speed and without any seeking).

'Rumor' is (from some Faf's friends) that RR runs for about 5 hours on PSP before the battery goes caput and needs to be recharged. Not sure if it's with mid or max brightness though.

Their estimates have been less for "movie playing" than "game playing," which leads me to believe that the disk-spinning would be more of a power issue for them. I'm sure they could push the chipset enough TO be more of an issue, but think that for now Sony will be keeping a close eye on developers on that area until the PSP establishes itself and good results on that issue. Work on more power-saving programming techniques first, and then maybe later--when it's not as critical a comparison issue--start letting some high-profile titles push the chipset harder to show off, rather than preserve power.

I'm curious to know what to expect from a good-looking MMO, though. That would end up pushing most ends of the system, and Sony may have to relax restrictions a bit just to make sure they can get an MMO rolling.

You can see just how useful siezing whatever's handy and making predictions can do. Just wait for the retail product and the testing that will follow--that's really all that counts anyway.

But then the Sony haters would have to wait for real data before complaining. And if that happened, what would we talk about around here? ;)

Unfortunatly that screenshot can't show ghosting/blurring when playing games at 60fps.

What is there to deny? We all know PSP LCD is bigger than NDS. But we all also know that NDS has two independent LCDs one of which is a touch screen. We all know PSP screen has a brightness adjustment but it reduces battery life further if not dimmed down. We all know that comparing both units at that angle gives a distorted view of actual quality of the displays especially using two totally different types of games.

That said can you answer the question of whether or not the PSP screens have significant ghosting with 60 fps games?

Must be nice to live in world where everything is based on distorted comparisons.

BTW if any NDS owner played their games at that extreme angle, then they must have some sort of agenda and/or fetish.

If you actually believe the NDS screens look like that when playing games then I totally agree that...

Oh and one last thing look how HUGE the PSP is compared to the NDS. If you call that a portable gaming console then so is a laptop including AC adapter.

The irony being that the PSP is actually smaller than the DS:

(sources: http://www.nintendo.com/techspecds and http://www.scee.presscentre.com/content/detail.asp?ReleaseID=3430&NewsAreaID=2)

DS is 5.85" x 3.33" x 1.13" = 22.012965 (cubic inches) = 360.727866 cubic centimeters.

PSP is 170mm (W) x 23mm (H) x 74mm (D) = 289340 (cubic millimeters) = 289.34 cubic centimeters.

PSP is 80% the volume of DS. :D
