What did turn me off though is the rather slow loading time. When waiting for the first video of Ridge Racer to load in the memory, I actually thought the machine went off, so long it was.

;)

They just need to add or have some sort of loading progress bar (I'm assuming it doesn't because how would one think the machine went off during this time).

I remembered that people claimed the Saturns loaded games much faster than the PS1 (which really was horrible, even if your drive didn't skip yet).

One of the specs. mentioned was that the Saturn drive had a much bigger cache than the PS1 drive.

Saturn has a processor (SH-1) and 512kb memory specifically dedicated to running the CD-ROM (the SH-1 is the only processor in the entire system you can't run code on).

PS1 has something like a 16kb load buffer... or was it 8?

We have the first numbers on battery life. Some guy reported playing the UMD with max brightness did make the battery go flat after 4h and 20min.

If true, that's good news for "streaming heavy" games like GTA or Jak.

^^ certainly, at least that would put an end to PC-Engine & Co. claims of 2 hour playback with everything at it's best (constant UMD fetching, highest brightness setting).

If it's true then I'm happy for them and myself as well since I already said I'll eventually get one when the price drops to $100. ;)

heh, it's not as if you're the only one that was concerned about battery life. I am equally relieved if this proves to hold true - yet we don't go out dishing it before it's a little more than just speculation. ;)

Actually it wasn't speculation at all considering the 2.5 hr figure came from SONY themselves initially. They later revised that to 4-6 hrs probably because they added the higher capacity battery. Again all depends on if this is true.

The 2.5hrs wasn't an official statement AFAIK. It was said by some SCEE guy from what I remember. People just latched onto it b/c it was negative. PEACE.

Sony did give a sweeping statement a while back, stating anything from two to ten hours "depending on what you're doing," so what if you have every feature running on a graphically demanding game...? (Then again, will we ever have the UMD spinning constantly while the WiFi pumps consistently, while the graphics are pushed near their limits...? Or will Sony keep tight reins on that to make sure some games won't drain it too fast?)

Regardless, articles immediately after siezed every number from two to ten in their statements, then Popular Science ran a "scientific analysis" reporting it should run games consistently for eight and music for ten... then Sony releases actual specifics which are much more to the point.

You can see just how useful siezing whatever's handy and making predictions can do. Just wait for the retail product and the testing that will follow--that's really all that counts anyway.
