PSP concept model, The REAL deal.

4.5" screen *widescreen* is not that big. It's about right actually if you want to present any high quality content on it. My old Casio Pocket PC had screen of about that size, and it was by no means too big.

Why the clammy love? I think clamshell design sucks. Didnt like the GBASP, didnt like those clamshell cellphones. Feels flimsy and definitely not as cool as a full length elongated horizontal design.
Preach it on. Clamshell sucks :)

Hey, gifa damn bout PSP or GBASP, but i want my handheld full length, or at least like that latest foldable transformable Clie. I hate those half split clamshell stuffs.

Is the reason that the buttons are so level with the surface (and possibly quite sensitive) because they don't want encourage you to press the buttons too hard?
I can imagine the UMD reading mechanism not liking if there is much pounding on the buttons.

IMO that's really pretty doubtful. I have a "vintage" portable CD player and yet while I pound on the control buttons like a madman the thing never skips (for that reason). Minidisc type media OTOH is even better at this. Besides, the lateral shocks it will receive are of a hundred times worse than the shocks of button presses.

Cthellis: sorry man, it's was just too obvious, someone had to do it.

18 cm is pretty big. But hey it is called Playstation Portable, that doesn't necessarily mean handheld. I think I could live with the PSP's size if it comes with a lot of features. Then it would be more of a multimedia device...

Yep... Which would explain the price (or the one thats being speculated, since we still have nothing confirmed yet)...

Big no-no for little kids. But i guess that's not Sony's "target".

It would be pretty much in line with their corporate philosophy established with PS/PS2 -> Age 16-25+

I'm still waiting for AIBO to become commercial and affordable. now THAT is something i will buy when i have the money :D

Or join a University team working for FIRA worldcup or ROBOCUP. TU Vienna was second this year in FIRA worldcup in several categories; pretty close finals but the Koreans beat our team by a small margin... But hey we won the robot parade

Well, wait till they get more realistic and intelligent! I am sure Sony will come up with an idea to make them as close to real life as it can get

hehe :)
Imagine if you bought the Sony's biped robot (whatsitsname?) and Aibo.
You could put Aibo on a leash and make the roboman walk the robodog, that would be cute 8)

Or program the roboman into thinking he's blind and let the dog walk him around...

That would make the whole length about 16cm (6.3"), that's 3 cm less than 19 cm, and everybody knows that 3 cm can make a diference (still biggish by any standards)

You're probably right its width is actually closer to 16-17 cm than 18-19 cm. Still pretty darn wide.

My guess, clamshell design will be too thick. You'll probably endup with 5-6 cm thick in clamshell.

Seriously I don't think it'll be 5-6 cm thick, then it would be a BSP (brick station portable). No way, the PSP is going to have the dimensions of a Sega Game Gear which was released several years ago...
I am exspecting 2-3cm thickness, with 3 being the absolute maximum.

Anyone remembers Douglas Adam's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy featuring the depressed robot Marvin (His response to the surge of happiness of the automatic door upon opening: "Oh god I am so depressed. Please somebody kill me")?

 That is true.

What I said was, if it was a clamshell design, it would probably be 5-6 cm thick. (This is by looking at the current concept design)

Seriously, I thought it would be smaller. And if Sony is serious, they should reduced the size too. 12 cm x 8 cm x 3 cm, Clamshell design, is what I want.
