PSP concept model, The REAL deal.

Form follows function, but that form doesn't look too functional...

I think the concept artist and the ergonomics specialist should sit down and have a nice long conversation :p ;)

well, for once it lacks the analog stick already confirmed by sony. so I guess the whole buttons layout is just a placeholder

The analog "stick" is the small round circle in the middle of the digipad.

Fredi

PS: I really like the design.

Ok, so this is supposedly somewhat 'official concept art' from Sony (unless the whole powerpoint presentation is just some hoax).
They should get rid of the 'snap on' loose cover thing and do a clamshell design.

I just thought of something (a random thought, which probably stops making sense just as soon as I press the 'Submit' button).
Is the reason that the buttons are so level with the surface (and possibly quite sensitive) because they don't want encourage you to press the buttons too hard?
I can imagine the UMD reading mechanism not liking if there is much pounding on the buttons.

The analog stick seems to be missing?
Or is the small circle in the middle of the d-pad the analog stick that is just in 'resting position' and erects when you press it down (you know, that kind of spring mechanism that is used in some devices, basically like the top of a ball-point pen)
Maybe there'll even be some mechanism that raises the all buttons a little when PSP is in 'Game' mode.

Oh BTW that ring on the back of the PSP concept is probably just a ring shaped window on the lid to see the UMD spinning ;)

Hey, and it's not the monstrosity that many here claimed it would be; not that I would know any people who were saying it wouldn't be.... ;)
Dude... it's 7 inches wide. It's friggin' huge. And that's assuming that there is no border around the screen at all.

To quote myself:
"No evidence? We know the screen size 4.5 inches in a 16:9 format. That translates into a width of approx. 3.9 inches - just for the screen.

In comparison the GBA SP is 3.23 inches wide and a modern MiniDisc player is just over 3 inches wide.

If Sony goes for a flip-top design similar to the GBA SP I doubt they'll be able to make it much smaller than 4.3 inches wide. It would likely also be considerably thicker than a GBA SP or a MiniDisc making for a very bulky unit. A horisontal design similar to the original GBA is probably what they will go for making the PSP quite big indeed."

It looks nasty as hell too.

no l-b, it will not have 'Dual Shock' type vibrating function, that'd wear the batteries out much too fast.

LMAO...hehe and some people actually believe it's a keychain piece

I guess a wrist strap seems too big to be used as reference, which is what that really IS, so using the term keychain would seem to lesson the blow. :p

Yeah like somebody is going to put that thing on a keychain...

I'd really like to have that dangling from my ignition switch.

Why the clammy love? I think clamshell design sucks. Didnt like the GBASP, didnt like those clamshell cellphones. Feels flimsy and definitely not as cool as a full length elongated horizontal design.

BUT now that i know its around 7inch/19cm length, does feel pretty big. About the size of the Casio portable scientific calculator im using! Thats quite a lil monster!

In other words, if you have a Casio calculator, you should take it out and do a lil adjustments to the size and see how "big" it is. The concept screen certainly made PSP "smaller" than it will actually be!

SONY used to be the masters of miniaturization...I guess times are changin...

IIRC SONY originally entered the videogame business because the original GB put their well known reputation of making portables electronics to shame.

Well, 7 inches actually it's more like a bit less than 18 cm.
Still, I don't understand how that 7"/18cm width was calculated.
4.5" screen is about 91 cm wide (3.6")
There's no way 5cm (2") space for the buttons on both sides.
I'd say more like 3.5cm at most (1.4").

That would make the whole length about 16cm (6.3"), that's 3 cm less than 19 cm, and everybody knows that 3 cm can make a diference (still biggish by any standards)

miniaturization only gets u so far when u have millions of people wanting a bigger screen.....

u give them a small compact design, they complain the screen is too small...

u give them a big screen, they complain it's too big....

Just realised that a 4.5" screen is actually very big for a handheld gaming device!
It's huge, they should make it 3.5" and it would still be big enough for games and occasional movies.
If 4.5" really is the screen size they are going to keep, then I see no other option for PSP than to go for a clamshell design, unless they want reactions like 'Oh my GOD! Teh PSP is HuGE LOL!!'

I opened the image in Photoshop, rotated and cropped it. Took the width of the display which we know is approx. 3.9 inches wide (not 3.6 as you write) and held it against the width of the entire unit. Quite simple really.

18 cm is pretty big. But hey it is called Playstation Portable, that doesn't necessarily mean handheld. I think I could live with the PSP's size if it comes with a lot of features. Then it would be more of a multimedia device...

Yep... Which would explain the price (or the one thats being speculated, since we still have nothing confirmed yet)...

Big no-no for little kids. But i guess that's not Sony's "target".

I'm still waiting for AIBO to become commercial and affordable. now THAT is something i will buy when i have the money :D

I saw this slide, it was a surprise that GBA is that hot!

That said, Sony needs the kiddies! You cant leave em out. Every lil bit counts.
