PSP concept model, The REAL deal.

ooh looks very very nice. I agree with you guys though that the controls might need some work, you don't want to be getting hand cramps after playing for long periods of time.

It is an interesting concept no more.

Do not think Ken K. does not want to get on stage at Sony E3 conference to show the PSP just to hear "we already know it for months".

I don't know if I like the backside, but the front is really good looking IMHO. Almost borders on sexy.

I must disagree. I always prioritize how sexy it looks from the backside over how good-looking the front is. ;)

On a serious note i'm shocked that they did not use a clamshell design. And that control pad looks horrendous, and the unit is too wide. Slightly bulgeing buttons/d-pad in addition to clamshell would compensate greatly for this. Aesthetically, it's quite beautiful, better than any of the train-wreck designs Nintendo has used over the last decade and a half for the Game Boys. :p

I pray they greatly modify this concept, but I fear they won't.

I thought it was to be a folding design?

Sweet though. I just don't see how they can cram much battery into that thing...

Hehehe... I can picture that tiny thing weighing like 2 lbs. for the battery now. XD Thanks ^_^

Small + heavy = harder to hold up for extended periods than large + heavy.

I like it. Hell, I love it. Sexy as hell.

Clamshell design be damned, I hate it on every device, and avoid it whenever possible. My cellphone and my pocket PC are not clamshell, and they feel a lot more solid to me than respective clamshell devices, and easier to hold and handle also.

I don't like it. :(

I hope they do a folding design like GBA SP, later on.

That design is too wide or long to be carry around, remind me of that Atari handheld.

But on the good side that design is kinda good functional wise, but its something that I'll keep in the drawer, than something I'll put in the pocket of my suit.

I think the artist got a little too carried away with form rather than utility.

I agree completely with you. Design should be the combination of form and utility. That thing looks really great, but has 3 flaws:

1) D-pad and buttons:
should be sticking out -> better ease of use and controllability;

2) metal edge:
that silver edge reduces ergonomics; that's not very comfortable to hold for several kours

3) screen:
the screen should be lower than the rest of the case -> prevents from scratching or from falling directly on to the screen when dropped; could be resolved by 1).

But that things itself looks just

Didn't you noticed that design is actually pretty thick. About 2 cm probably more. And wide about 3 times as wide as the UMD.

This is disagree with. It may be less ergonomatic, but as far as utility goes it's huge when you drop the thing or hit it against something.

And it might not feel that bad when you look at your hand's anatomy. The rest of the points I agree with to some extent.

I like the front very much, slick and sexy. (can't say for utility, but I like the looks and I am not afraid of the analog stick sticking out somewhere far anymore).

Btw DM, Workstation = Console = 2TFlops. Foiled again doh!

Yeah, it 's some protection against falling and hitting. didn't think of that at first. But I'd like them to do sg. about protecting the screen as well.
Concerning ergonomics: I am still not sure. But I don't want to judge it prematurely, so I'll wait till I can hold it in my palms.

Actually, that nipple thing, Does it errect, when you touch it ? :)

Me imagines Tagrineth stomping on V3 screaming "PIGSSSSSS" ;)

Anyways, I hope it doesn't some PSP units might feel like it tickles and that turns them off.

Now that is being mean :p, didn't mommy teach you to stop kicking when the opponent is on the floor ?

(I can't BELIEVE no one gave a rimshot to this man! Oh well, better late than never.)

*ba-dum, KSSSSH*

As much as im ready to declare DEATH to KK and his dreamy hype, i could never fault Sony design philosophy. That does look hot as hell!

Then again, let note thats still concept art, meaning it HAS to look great. As such, mentioned by others, the functionality has taken a backseat. I be hoping that the final unit has protruded buttons, By then it might mean +1 function -1 design, since the slickness of this art has to do with the overall smooth look.

Anyone know the dimension and weight of PSP?

I have just thought how troublesome it might be for some guy to hold the unit and stare at the screen for a movie length. Games are alright since you are interacting with the unit, but plain lookin.. hhmm ie Movie viewing might be a lil too taxing.

ANYWAY, that strap, i believe, is more like a cellphone strap where you can sling in around your neck. Thats what many cellphone today are doing. Not a keychain for sure. ;)

From that concept art, you can reference the UMD which is about 60 mm wide.

So the whole thing would be 18-19 cm x 7-8 cm x 2-3 cm (pretty darn big).

Weight ?, I don't know. Can't really speculate. The battery probably weigh the most.

That concept looks stylish, but not very ergonomic.
I'd prefer a clamshell desingn, or at least a the screen part should be 'clamshell'.
Slightly raised buttons, instead of too touch sensitive 'flat' buttons.

Where's all the connections? How do you add all those gps, camera etc. extra functions?
Where's the speakers? Headphone socket? Shoulder buttons?

I hope this is not the final PSP design (it isn't as it's just a concept made by someone not even working for Sony).
A nice render, but I almost like that '21th century walkman' concept better, that was made by one of our forum members ;)
