PSN and XBOX Live Post Mortem

Something weird is going on and I dont think its the PSN. My PS4 cant connect to PSN since yesterday but it tells me that the internet connection is fine and I can sign in to PSN via PC.

Has anyone got this issue?

Port issue? Something change on your router? Assuming you probably tried hard reset on your modem and router or gateway? Almost every home router I've ever owned periodically had to be rebooted because reasons.

Does PS4 have a good network test on it? Xbox One network test can now show "most" problems, because it shows NAT and has a few different tests that will let you know if Xbox Live is having issues and stuff like that. It's still not great, but it helps at a glance.

I restarted the modem but nothing happened. Internet connection test is fine on the PS4 and I get a NAT 2. It only fails on the PSN connection.
When you say rebooted what exactly do you mean?

NAT type 2 is moderate. Ideally you want type 1 (open). For whatever reason I need to hard reset my router once a month. Turn the power off and back on again. Do you mind me asking what kind of router you have and what kind of modem?

Not all isp allows nat 1 though.

PSN also sometimes ban ip. So if you have dynamic ip, just keep restarting the modem / router to get a new one that works.

I always had NAT 2 and I never had an issue. I just reset it to factory settings to see if there is any change. Still nothing. The router is a WTM652

Are you able to login to your router, or does your ISP control it? You may want to try putting your console on DMZ (basically means bypassing the firewall for that device) or follow a guide to opening ports on that router (http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Arris/WTM652/PlayStation_Network.htm). A third option is to make sure your router has UPNP enabled so it will open ports automatically as your Playstation needs them (http://screenshots.portforward.com/routers/Arris/WTM652/System_Settings.htm)

I'd probably prefer the UPNP option, but if you want to open ports manually this is the official list of ports from the PS4 manual:

  • TCP: 80, 443, 3478, 3479, 3480
  • UDP: 3478, 3479

If his isp doesn't allow nat 1, he can do nothing to get nat 1.

In my case my isp only allow nat 1 when subscribed to "dedicated ip" optional feature and bridge their router to my own router.

Yes, if you have a router behind another router, and both are doing NAT, you'll most likely have NAT issues. Then you want the ISP device in bridge mode and let your own router do NAT.

I don't know what Nesh's setup allows for. I just thought I'd provide the info so Nesh could try it, if possible. It may fix Nesh's PSN connection issues, if the changes can be made. If the router is already setup properly, with one of the three options I listed, then it could be a dual NAT situation as you've described, if Nesh has a modem and a router, or a gateway and the router.

I dont know what is going on. My PS4 connected normally all this time. Now it doesnt connect to PSN. I have only one router. Enabling UPNP does nothing.
Regarding the solution on this link http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Arris/WTM652/PlayStation_Network.htm I need also to put an IP number but I dont know which one I should put. In the screenshots that part is empty

I forgot that to setup port forwarding, you need to set a static IP address on your PS4. Then the IP address you use in the screenshots is the IP you've assigned to your PS4.

If your PS4 has UPNP enabled you shouldn't have to forward your ports because it will happen automatically. If it's enabled and you can't connect, you could go to your firewall page on your router and under the DMZ settings put the IP address of your PS4 on the DMZ. That basically means your PS4 will not be protected by the router's firewall. If you can connect with the console set to DMZ, then it's likely a port or firewall issue that's preventing you from connecting. If you can't connect while in the DMZ, then there's something more complicated going on. DMZ is a pretty good test.

A lot of console users put their consoles in the DMZ and leave it there. I'm the paranoid type, so I don't. I guess it depends how you use the console.

I managed to fix the issue. I still havent figured what is the problem. But I simply connected my PS4 into a different ethernet port on my router while it was trying to sign in and voila.
Very strange

Bad port on the router? Home routers, switches and gateways tend to be built to last a pretty short period of time.
