PSN and XBOX Live Post Mortem

What do you mean? Games are not region locked, DLC is.
game is region locked in PS4. You buy Game A on Indonesia PSN, you dont have the license for it in JP PSN.

and @Nesh

but in Xbox, you can buy Game A in US xbox live, then login using JP xbox live* to download the JP version.

*i dont remember whether you need to use proper US and JP account or you can simply change the store region.

thus my conclusion that, Xbox games are region free. PS4 are not.

EDIT:
on PS4, its the console that is region free. the PSN in cahoot with the game is region locked. But when they are not in cahoot, its region free (hence i say the console itself is region free)

I have no idea what you are talking about, I have both US and UK games - both playable on the same console using my UK PSN (inc. online) therefore region free.

Since PS3 was released I have never had a region issue outside the DLC needing to be from the same region as the game to work.

What you're talking about is a 'regionless' store front...the only difference is the store region you purchase from is the version you get on PS4. OOI why would you do that?

He's saying you can't buy a game on US PSN and then download the Japanese version from Japan PSN. The consoles can run content from any region, but the PSN content is locked to region. So you don't buy a game from PSN, but a specific regional license limited to that PSN flavour.

What if you want to play the game in the Japanese version with Japanese friends? You have to buy it again. What if you want the NTSC version of PS2 games? Need to use a US account. Then you want to play the PAL version in French - need to buy the game again.

As for the OP, I've just remembered that the PSN store is shit. Most games I view don't even have screenshots, let alone vids, and you have to search the internet (no links provided) to find what a game really is. Then search criteria can throw up false positives, as well as being slow and cumbersome. Is XB Store that bad?

Why would anyone want to buy the same game again? :s The one you buy more than will suffice to play against anyone around the world

Oh that I agree. The lack of screenshots or videos are annoying.

@Nesh
fully region-free PSN content will also helps people to buy all contents (including country-specific limited contents) in the best possible price (discounts).

for example, i have SG Xbox Live. Then easily moved to US xbox live (because windows 10 yelling at me with region error warning). Then JP xbox live got free xbox one game (i forgot). I "buy" it in Japan but the content also show as "bought" on US.

if PS4 allows that, i will happily download destiny japan version to "refresh" the game that now i remember almost all the dialogue in loading screen -______-

EDIT: i think the region-free xbox live is more useful for Mobile Device, where people can go around the world instead console where people normally never get it out of country. So only 1%-ers like me with weird discount hunting hobby that got affected.

I am curious because although I dont play much online, my PS4 has never failed to sign in, and it goes throughsome stress tests daily because I remote play with my Vita MGSV which is alway connected and my PS4 issigned in
This is me. I almost never play online so PSN for me is basic connectivity, the store and downloads and patches.

Having said that I can't remember the last time I couldn't login, which is as basic as it gets.

PSN is super bad.

Right with the start of PS4, it went completely downhill:

1.) brutal regular stability issues, where people cannot login, thus cannot play online

2.) you need plus to play online

3.) in comparison to PS3 era, there are no good games for free with plus anymore.

Thus, everything just got worse.

Sony sucks up all the PS+ money, but don't invest into software and hardware infrastructure.

What about a poll: will we be able to play PS4 online games during holidays...yes/no?

I fear I know the answer...

I don't know what to say. You live in some region where the PSN doesn't work? Brutal stability issues? If that were true Neogaf and the internet would be in flames. Black Firday morning was about the only time this year. There are objective measure of this, I'd love to see the data for brutal stability issues.

No good games for PS+? I think you mean no big retail games? Good is subjective, but even then many of the games they gave away had high metacritic scores. Even if you only played 3-4 games off the list, that is $30-$50 of value.

But I can do that anyway on PS4 - I check the prices and buy the best deal? I usually just compare the US & UK versions though. I get shifty saying you never have to re-buy - but again, why would you? The games are all region linked are they not meaning anyone can play against anyone from around the world? An example would be the US version of LoU had more gore online, I purchased that version and play with my US account an can be playing against anyone around the world.

Sorry, I just don't see the 'issue'!?

@goonergaz like i said in bad english... the PSN content is region locked.

You buy game X on region 1. then there's a nice discount in Region 2 for the dlcs. you cant do that in PS4.
You buy game X on region 1 that is not in your native language, then sometime later the game got released on your country with proper language. You need to buy twice on PS4.

i also just checked on xbox.com that my JP purchase also valid in US account. you just need to change the storefront, the Xbox games license is not region locked. it was Forza Fast Furious edition, i bought it using xbox live japan storefront. But it shows valid license on my US account.

Note, i dont have an xbox one. But the license shown on the xbox.com should be correct.

EDIT: screenshot for JP and US

EDIT2:
dunno how on X1, but on X360 the game language (and content censoring) can be changed by changing the console language/locale.

I call BS then, sorry. 4-6 raids a month would equate to a huge amount of outages when accounting for all the times the raids are not attempted (unless you assert raids only happen during outages). I've been playing Destiny non-stop since summer and have yet to have an issue getting on the PSN. Sometimes there is scheduled maintenance, but random outages are extremely rare. The last I heard of a real issue was a morning of Black Friday, not exactly random though - it broke a bunch of PSN records.

The last time I could not log in was the DDoS crap with the Lizard morons.

Here. If you don't believe me, maybe you'll believe Square Enix.

Just a very small sampling of them.

Sony Computer Entertainment's "PSN" service is currently experiencing technical difficulties, causing players to be unable to log in to the PlayStation®3 and PlayStation®4 versions of FINAL FANTASY XIV.

* Players that are already logged in can continue to play as long as they remain logged in.

There were official PSN problems in Oct., Sept., Aug., etc.

When it's a Square Enix server issue, it affects all users and is not then denoted as a "PSN Technical Issue."

It's also not limited to FFXIV when this happens. Since the majority of our Raid members are PS4 users, they also can't play any PS4 game that requires you to sign into PSN while this is happening.

SB

So your evidence is scraping forums? No evidence of system wide PSN outages and no personal experience of you not connecting to the PSN? I wonder if I went to XBL, Comcast, Netflix, etc. problem forums if I would find post about people having problems?

What are you even talking about? There are going to be outages with any service. Even FFXIV has problems with their servers from time to time. But obviously not as frequently as PSN issues.

My evidence is playing with a raid group of 8 members. 6 of which are on PS4. And in a guild. 35 of which are on PS4. And in multiple linkshells. Hundreds of users on PS4.

I just pulled that from the forums because you don't seem to be able to accept that there might be flaws in PSN, which there are. It's better, but it's still horrible with regards to stability.

SB

This thread has a dearth of people ragging on XBox Live. So I'll fire a shot.

In my experience, the whole online experience on XBone is worse than it was on the 360, at least it was at launch. I don't play much anymore. It's just too damn cumbersome to do basic things that were simple and intuitive on the 360.

During the last Lizard attack, last year, I always had the impression that PSN was more affected than XBL. And I believe in @Silent_Buddha when he feels that PSN has generally more often problems than XBL.

But there are also more PSN users than XBL ones, so that could explain the general impressions if 2x more blue gamers are complaining than green gamers...

That's just my personal feelings, and I am a blue gamer.

I bought PS4 FFX from the jap shop and I can't play it unless I login to my jap account on the PS4. I guess I have to set the PS4 as the primary machine for my jap account if I want to be able to play it on my other account?

Has or had more problems? The Lizard attack was I think last year?
The sample of people replying on this thread is very small, and each is talking about different issues.

I was expecting more players of the popular multiplayer games to respond in this thread but so far none

I think that is true. There is data to support that.

And I believe in @Silent_Buddha when he feels that PSN has generally more often problems than XBL.

I personally don't care what he feels. He is making an assertion based on a pre-existing viewpoint mixed with some small sample of users from a forum where the only reason to post is when there are issues. It is not a random sampling of PSN users or data about general PSN uptime. So his confirmation bias does not confirm anything other than his bias.

No, he is providing anecdotal experience, just like you and everyone else provided.
