PSN and XBOX Live Post Mortem

btw PSN also sometimes temporarily blacklist IP address. at least thats what i suspected. Because the popular cure for PSN down-time in my country is "reset your modem".

the internet works fine but only PSN cant connect and everybody else can connect. reset modem to get new IP, voila, can connect to PSN.

probably because my country is in lots of spam blacklist lol

I think that is true. There is data to support that.

Yes, if my memory serves me correctly, PSN had issues longer than xbox with that attack.

Then again it looked like somebody messed up the config on the ddos scrubber/cleaner. Since changing mtu got you back online when others was unable to.

again, no issues here and my kids play 3pm - 9pm most evening and longer over weekends - pretty much peek times in the UK.

You might wanna get them to do some homework. :p I must be a mean dad, my kids don't get much more than a couple of hours.

But yeah, to your point, I haven't noticed many issues - the only problem has been trying to find players in COD.

lol, I should mention I have 4 kids from 13 to 21 and 3 of them share 1 PS4! :p

I have three from 7 to 12. They mostly play together (Rocket League, Fat Princess, etc.) but the middle one plays Destiny whenever he can (after homework!). What I don't hear from him is "Dad, the PSN is down again!".

XBL is down for some it seems.

i misread that as phantom squid and i though my squid P.T. redownload app took down xbox live O_O
then clicked the link... oh.

Doesnt seem down for me at all.

So we can then assume that since not everybody is experiencing problems at the same time, some might still be experiencing problems, this goes for both PSN & Live.

Both of these networks are widely distributed, so local issues might be down to local CDN infrastructure, local isp issues, regional issues. Maybe even not all distributed nodes have the same resources available and the same protection from overload/attacks.

CDNs are usually hosted locally with ISPs and they might be on an underpowered server under some ones desk :)

I do not have Live, but reliability wise, PSN has not been better or worse than anything else that I use that is hosted online.
Yes, x-mas last year was crap and it will be interesting to see if PSN & Live are better prepared this year.
Especially since attacks have been announced, if I was a dba, server admin or network guy at Sony / MS, I would have made sure to be on vacation somewhere with no connectivity. :D

PSN (US) seems to be officially down, no reason listed as to why: https://twitter.com/AskPlayStation/status/684069164164714496
AskPlaystation: We're aware that some users are having trouble accessing PSN. Thanks for your patience as we investigate. http://bit.ly/22H7SGW

The company's network status tracker also notes that all of PSN's services are having issues. There's no word when service will be restored, but we'd imagine Sony is working feverishly to get things sorted ahead of its CES press conference tomorrow.

Why now and not during the xmas holidays? Did the ddos kids have to wait until Sony stopped paying for cloudflare? ;)

Release psvr the same time as oculus or we will keep attacking!

Probably like that? The attack is after Palmer said oculus is q1

Hey it's really down for real! Usually I'm not affected when it's sporadic like a ddos....

Oh well, I'll take this as an act of god ordering me to finish fallout 4, he turned it off with his noodly appendage.

I am doubting this is a ddos, because it doesn't take many hours for cloudflare to kick in, it's been 6+ hours. Could be a legitimate problem, like somebody messed up and will sadly lose his job. I am already sad for him. It's not his fault they assumed he was competent because of his fake resume and diploma he bought on the internet.

Oups sorry. Yes master! I'm playing fallout 4 right now!
