[PS3] Uncharted 2

Sigh, more horrible aliasing. Although from those screenshots it appears they try to hide much of it by having a "fuzzy glow" surrounding virtually everything.

Really nice character models with distinctive faces. I like that. But again "fuzzy glow" surrounding everything even when the part is in a shadow. The girl in the white shirt's arm for example.

Interesting that while the girl in the red shirt has a fuzzy glow also, it isn't on her right arm.

Some really nice draw distance, almost Halo 3'esque. But with much greater model/detail density. And looks especially nice compared to the massive DOF blur in Infamous.

Many textures seem to lack detail. Although this is probably done on purpose similar to KZ2 to mask the limitations of the PS3 by going for a certain art direction. The blur starts to bother me a bit too much looking at static screens though. I'd imagine this looks worlds better in action than in still pictures.

All together makes for a very nice visual presentation.

Is there a generic B3D PSN account that people could use to download the beta? I'm almost certain I won't use my code but I would rather more people were able to play the beta than fewer and I don't want to do the PM me thing.

You cannot share the Beta. The reason is that people won't be able to play it within 24 hours of another account playing it.

It's an artifact from the depth of field effect, not an attempt to hide anything.

Forgive me if this is ignorance...but is that not to do with the SSAO?

:???: We are talking yet about a multiplayer mode beta right? AA a part, I think it's normal some parts are reduced to avoid slowdown...

Yeah, by now they would have improved on rendering Elena for sure.

I was referring to the new girl vs Elena though. :)

Yeah I agree, I prefer last years model too! :devilish: I'm not fond of the new girl at all, though for some reason, I expect last years model to prevail in the end. Although...... remember Jak & Daxter, they kind of ditched the lovely Keira for the new girl in Jak 2 which was just... unacceptable.

Aaahh, I'm really looking forward to this game....

The new girl is probably going to end up being a double-crossing thief ... ;)

Arwin - before clicking on the "Show Spoiler" - could you define if it's a spoiler from Uncharted 1, Uncharted 2, Uncharted 2 Beta etc...? Depending on which it is, I'll know if it's safe to read it or not..

Thanks!

Nothing that can't be decided by a wrestling match in jello.

U2, I can never stay away from clicking spoiler tags :D

Uncharted 2. And it's not an actual spoiler ... it's just a guess. But even good guesses can spoil things. And narratives can be terribly easy to predict sometimes, especially for someone who studied narrative technology at university. ;) (though just general pattern recognition and watching a lot of movies, reading a lot of books can have the exact same effect of course).

Even the first Uncharted had great IQ, and the sequel appears to do better, so what horrible aliasing are you talking about ? And I don't understand the whole "to mask the limitations" thing...So the developer chose a style in order to fool us into believing the console is powerful and the game impressive ?
would you care to explain ? :???:

The aliasing is apparent in the top picture. The statues arms exhibit 0xAA. Taht said, the overall aliasing doesn't look at all bad to me. The DOF and bloom do hide it, but I don't think ND are trying to hide anything. These are naturally effects that just have the beneficial side-effect of reducing the jaggies. As for detail, all textures are hand-painted, so will have a softer, less detailed look. They still look incredible!

I think the hand-painted textures in U1 had a more detailed look to them. Highly detailed in fact. Not sure if they've toned it down for U2. Still they didn't show how high-res they were until you got really close (streamed in). Perhaps that's just not in yet, or not in the multi.

I think that fuzzy glow you are mentioning is their depth of field post process bleeding slightly over the characters silhouettes. You see it on Elena's arm because her right arm is far away from the background wall pixels that surround it so there is some depth of field going on there, whereas on the black haired girl her right arm is very close to the background pixels, in that case Nate's shirt, so there is no depth of field effect going on there.

Just a guess here, but I think they may have decided to not use the msaa hardware and instead have gone for some post process solution. On some of the shots you can almost see what looks like selective AA, some edges get no AA at all whereas others get some form of it.

Wouldn't that just be the typical issue with post-processing or tone mapping after AA resolve?

They also seem to be using that MSAA trick for shadows that we saw with the framebuffer for Lair and Harry Potter.

What trick was that?
