[PS3] Resistance 3 [SPOILER ALERT - Contains R2 story discussion]

Gamersyde showers it with love wholesale !!!

First excellent surprise of this end of year, Resistance 3 finally manages to become a PS3 exclusive worthy of its counterparts. Even though it is less lengthy than the previous episode's, the campaign mode is, by far, better paced, more spectacular and more exciting to play. It is also built on a crescendo that takes the player on an impressive roller-coaster ride. Mutliplayer and co-op add even more play time to the equation if the single player experience is not enough for you. Truth be told, I haven't had such a blast with a first person shooter in a long while, which is why I strongly advise you to give it a try. After all, Resistance 3 has no trouble besting Killzone 3 and other references of the genre in many departments.

Its not everyday you hear that ! I haven't read any of the reviews yet, I'll read them only after I am done with the campaign. Just reading the closing comments is enough to get pumped !

The game is excellent.

Best of the series. I enjoy it more than other shooters in recent memory so far. I need to sleep over it tonight and see if I still have the same feelings tomorrow. The game has some minor issues, but none of them matters (again, so far).

I forgot what the full name of R3 is. It should be called "Resistance 3: Let Me Catch My Breath". ^_^

EDIT: You should play it on Difficult, and then lower to Normal when in trouble.

Can't wait until I get home and put the game on my PS3!
Funny, but I hate that I have to decide whether I'd play it with 3D or 2D (some trade-off likely with visuals in favour of 3D), and with DualShock or Move.
I tried KZ3 with Move and 3D after I'd finished it with DS, and while it was very good, I was not sure if I'd like to play the whole game with them.
I don't think Resistance 3 has other name like "Fall of Man", it's just Resistance 2. Wasn't RE2 also just Resistance 2?

Ah ! Finally some B3D impressions ! Am wwaiting with baited breath for it now !

It should be called"Resistance : Play it u facking naysayer ! " :devilish:

Resistance had something that made it stand out from other FPS's. And has an existing fanbase wanting more of it. Yet ironically threw away all the made it unique, and replaced it with cliché FPS checklist features. They have and an active community that has spend the last few year explaining them why R2 didn't work, and here they are with R3 making the exact same mistakes. I'm not sure what happened to Insomniac.

/end rant. :p

My guess is that when they made RFOM, the multiplayer was much of an unknown quantity it being the first PS3 FPS. Given how long the campaign mode was and how story driven it was, I wouldn't be surprised if the MP started out as a relative 'quick' afterthought, but received more and more attention as the launch date came closer. The MP itself was rather basic - but that's IMO was its biggest strength and why the gameplay was rather balanced.

The more weapons and gimmicks you add, the more complex it becomes to balance things out. I don't mind killstreaks or perks, as long as they don't make good players even better. CoD didn't get this particularly right, but I do find there is a difference between a killstreak giving you radar or a helicopter that only shoots from above, rather than giving you super weapons or super abilities. The latter is a lot worse, as it breaks a balanced environment more.

I'm really torn between this and Dead Island for tomorrow's purchase. I'm really eager to play R3's campaign but also wanna try out Far cry with zombies:). What to do B3D?

Thanks for the info Shifty, looks like I'll be popping some chimera heads then and I know deep down in my heart it would be R3 first. Still Edge review is way too harsh.

Ignoring the MP aspect of R3, I have to say that I am excited about receiving my copy of R3 in the next few days. Even though I think there are better shooters out there (mechanic wise), the story-driven campaign makes up for it in a long way. It to me, is the only shooter that comes close to what I found great in Half-Life - being a one man (most of the time), in a big war fighting your way through to victory. I also love the sci-fi aspect of it and how there are fine shock-elements.

KZ2/3 come closest to this (between KZ and CoD - the two other franchises that I know well), but due to the fact that you are usually fighting an open-scale war with AI controlled friendlies, I'd say it's closer to the experience Call of Duty provides. In the Resistance franchise though, you have the gritty atmosphere of wandering narrow corridors, smaller scale fights followed by some open huge battles. The story and atmosphere are a lot more player centered. This to me is what makes the game a must buy title.

I can't wait! :)

Metacritic shows the usual range from 50s to 80s. I think with less polished games it comes down to whether the reviewer gains enough subjective, visceral satisfaction to overlook its faults or not. I'll take a scathing review as being more accurate in describing a game's faults but not necessarily as indicative of whether you'd enjoy the game or not. User reviews help there, but most useful is a demo. Clearly a game with an 83% metapoints and some 90s is going to be more polished and valued by owners on average than a game scoring 73% metapoints with some notably low review scores, and in this age of lots of games worth buying, reviews are going to be the deciding factor very often.

EDGE review awards Dead Island 3/10 and it sounds broken. That's really for a Dead Island thread, but going by reviews, R3 is hitting the high notes and Dead Island the lower ones.

Other review sites have been giving DI some pretty good scores so Edge's review is one of the few that gave it a low score.Much like Game Informer's review of R3 where they pretty much slammed the game but its been getting good reviews from other sites. On a different note, it seems that R3 has a nice and lengthy campaign so i'll pick up the game in a couple of weeks or so.

Why don't you buy both? Serious question!

Game Informer pretty slammed Resistance 3's mp calling it generic while also ripping off Halo's bubble shield and hologram armor abilities amongst other things. Its just one review that doesn't dictate the quality of the game.My experience with DI is the exact opposite of what Edge has been saying.

well to be honest...it kind of felt generic for me too

but I read the review of german gamepro...and they really say that the campaign is super great and highly recommended! I am happy that I am interested in SP

Is the 3D broken in Resistance 3??
My display goes funky if I enable 3D in the game. The screen is divided horizontally in two and there's pinkish interference on the screen. The 3D is not working.
I tried a 3D movie and it worked, so it's not a fault with my TV or PS3.

I guess I'll delete the install data and try again...

Edit: Bugger! It didn't let me delete the game data file, it just hand there deteting... for almost half an hour before I forced a reboot. NOw the file is corrupted and still won't let me delete. Damn!!!
Must try safe mode, and restore file system.

Ask Patsu, he has been playing it in 3D !

What do you expect from a company that when asked why R&C All 4 One is 30 fps instead of 60 fps like the previous basically answered "We can make it look better!"?*

*Not an exact quote, read it on an interview on the PS Blog but I can not find the article now.

Yeah, and there was that. Although Resistance always was 30 fps. I'm kind of curious if we'll be able to notice the extra year of development time R3 was given. Or maybe Insomniac has spread itself thin between R3, R&C All 4 One, Overstrike, and starting that new studio.

You can end your rant now as a "Hardcore Mode" with no perks will be available via day 1 patch . Also you'll get 2 free maps too:p !

Also, I think I'll try co-op only in my second playthrough. and I can't play on difficult. Hard in RFOM was pretty hard for me, dunno how people played on Superhuman !

I'll have to play Hardcore Mode before it gets my approval. There's a lot more I want, or perhaps don't want, beyond no perks. Thing like weapon pick-ups, no killstreak rewards, an accurate Carbine.

I'm hoping we'll get another Superhuman difficulty that is equal to Rfom's. In R2 the difference between difficulty settings was negligible.

That was indeed the great thing about Rfom MP, it was simple yet deep.

Personally I don't like any kind of perks or killstreak rewards. Why should somebody else have to suffer for my doing well. Playing well is it's own reward. I don't need to cheapen that by taking cheap shots at others. I haven't seen a game that didn't further unbalance itself by adding perks and killstreak rewards.

It works for me. Looks like something went wrong with your game install. :(

Because of the way the developers craft the game, the 3D effect made R3 locations look "volumetric", somewhat on par with KZ3 but darker. KZ3 shows more variety and more Hollywood-style cinematic. R3 is more homely, or more trilling depending on where you are. It's not truly scary but occasionally, I wanted to know "Are they still behind me ?", "Where is that noise coming from ?". Don't go in with a horror game mindset, it's a shooter and you have a weapon wheel. ^_^

EDIT: FPS veterans should play in Difficult mode, and drop difficulty to Normal temporarily if you want.

Whatever you choose first doesn't matter, just don't miss R3 campaign. ;-)

Yeah, a few Gaffers mentioned that the game is like Half-Life, in the sense that the environments are crafted with a lot of details and the NPC react to you. It felt like you're a part of the "play".

However in terms of gunplay, it's like RFOM and R2 combined, but tightly paced. I decided to stop and take my time now that I'm half way through. Don't want this thing to end so quickly. :devilish:

Most of the friendly AIs are citizens, so they won't act like KZ3 ISA soldiers and Rico, or Halo marines. Don't expect them to tango with the Chimeras. They will hold their own, but not in the traditional military encounter way. In fact, the NPCs made it very clear that you're the man, and they are counting on you (You are Gandalf. They are Pippin, Bilbo, etc.).

The enemy AIs ? I'm still trying to find out. I find a variety of behavior from them. Occasionally, they may stand still like a dummy if you caught them unprepared. Twice, I turn around and one of them is behind me (which made me jump a little ). At one time, I retreated to get my serum and headed back to my cover. This Chimera attempted to hide there instead. Had I arrived half a second later, I would have run into his face. ^_^

In general, the enemy variety is like RFOM. You fight all sorts of enemy behavior type (Leapers, long limbs, those that jump around like grasshoppers, etc.)

A most definite yes. Day and night difference between the 2-year R2 and the 3-year R3. :p
Tech specs is lower in R3. But everything about the game is meatier in R3.

I think Insomniac is still fixing the MP. I hope the Hardcore mode doesn't have killstreak too. Carbine is still a little off compared to RFOM. Bullseye is superb.

Agreed !

That's good to hear. I'm still getting the game this friday. I might even play it if I can tear myself away from DE:HR for a moment.
