PS3 ready for large scale global launch?

Maybe you guys are right, maybe their is no chance of a global launch...... :p

I never said that. You incidicated that they were stocking piling parts now to ship soon. Which we found out is not the case...

Ahh I see Pipo beat me to the punch and said it better then I did!

One million a month isn't going to be classed as mass shortages for long (except if demand is for 50 million at launch!). That's the difference between PS3 and XB360 and other consoles. They seem confident (could be wrong though I guess) that they can make these things quickly enough.

I think being the premium priced unit this upcoming holiday season (apprx. 50,000 yen, or $425.00, or higher) will work to their advantage. At this price range, they will be able to make demand much more managable because, while early adopters are likely to pay anything, the casual will be much more price limiting in their buying decision process. Sony thinks this should weigh out to demand = supply initially, with demand growing as supply grows.

the thing is if they can ramp up their production capacity to 1 million systems a month, then why are they only projecting 6 million systems available worlwide untill march 07?

My guess would be that they're bottlenecked by a tech that's not being produced until a month or so before launch. If it's making BRD drives that PS3 is waiting on, they can't stockpile whole systems. Actual final units will only be around a month or so before launch, but then with a steady stream afterwards.

It doesn't make much sense though, that they have final parts now and are releasing with all of 1-2 million on day one.

The hell there won't be any shortages. Best case scenario is 3.5-4 million shipped consoles for 2006 and another 2-2.5 until march 07. That means an average of 1.5-1.8 million units sold per region in the first 5 months - and as Japan would take a lot more from the overall supply, this means that the availability will be about the same as it was with the X360!
And even from then on, 1 million per month for all 3 regions meens 300.000 units per month for US, EU and Japan. Again, quite comparable to the Xbox and certainly not significantly more.

And that's all if they manage to hold on to those plans in practice. Remember, 1 million PS2s were promised for the US launch but only half of that was actually shipped; and MS has problems now as well.

I have to agree with Laa-Yosh on this one. There'll be major shortages for at least a couple of months. As with X360 it'll probably take half a year until the situation normalizes.

World wide launch for PS3 is a STUPID idea because:

- there will be massive shortages (even more than 360)
- 360 will have more compelling lineup, better looking games
- 360 will likely be much cheaper and AVAILABLE
- parents walk into store: can't find a damn ps3 anywhere, looks at 360, same games (mult-console), more games, CHEAPER, AVAILABLE, buys 360 instead.
