Same here, I paid more than 500 Euro as well for the launch PS2, two weeks after the EU launch date, incidentally, which I think was a year after the Japanese release?

Compared to what the PS2 offered for the money, the 20Gb model PS3 really offers lots of value for me at launch, with the HDD, wireless controller, webbrowser, 1Gbit LAN, lots of media functions, online demo downloads, option to run Linux at no extra cost, bluetooth, and so on. Big improvement over last time, for sure.

I think in my area the PS2 launch price was something in between 420 and 440 Euros.
I imported an US model at launch and I paid about 380-400 total with shipping, duty and taxes.

In Finland the PS2 cost from 496€ to 580€ in 2000. I paid 496€ for it myself.

no US launchprice was 299US$ and they where still complaining it was expensive .

There's no way that is correct. If my scanner was working, i'd scan my old PSMs and OPMs showing the launch price was 300 dollars. you should be able to find it easily though: Look at IGN's archive and go all the way back to like early 2000.

The number you quoted for launch price has since been changed.
It was definitely always $299, though ebay prices (and probably the cost of production + shipping) could have averaged out to that $549 cost.

The PS3 cost estimate is $100 too high and the X360 one is $100 too low IMO.
