PS3 = Possible massive distribution of Linux?

Yeah, I suppose that means I would have to wait a bit and by that time it is likely that the price of an equivalently powerful PC would have fallen enough not to make it worth the bother. It was just an idea, as I would use it to mainly replace my media center pc, of course it would not have a HDTV tuner either soo I guess I was just letting a bit of thought get ahead of itself.

Define regular PC. You would have to recompile any application that you want to run on the PS3. Apps like Firefox and OpenOffice could be ported, but it won't be trivial. To my knowledge, Firefox doesn't run on the PS2 Linux kit yet. If you want a regular PC, you are better off getting a cheap x86. PS3 Linux only makes sense to develop apps that take advantage of the PS3 strength, e.g. distributed rendering, PVR, media center etc.

Mozilla is available for PS2/Linux, you can easily build it from source (and there are packages available). OpenOffice would take a little more work, you would probably need a JVM.

Though I agree it's not going to supercede a normal PC, particularly with only 256 MB of RAM.
