PS3 OS Resources.

I thought the Italian channel schedule was fixed in the 1.02 patch?

Trust me... it was not... For several channels I have to record by time and only get channel's info for the currently playing show when I am watching the channel itself and even then not on the EPG view... there is still a lot of work to be done, but PlayTV IS a great product and PS3+PlayTV IS the best DVB/DVB+Recorder/TiVo-like product available today.

Being happy with a product is not mutually exclusive with wanting to see it improved :p.

It's SD. PlayTV is SD only as far as I know. I believe that PlayTV itself is simply a repackaged USB receiver - I seem to recall reading that people have got it running on PC using readily available drivers.
It was supposed to have dual HD tuners.

Yap. And supposed to upgrade to handle new HD standard in Europe once it's official. I just don't know if they have done it yet.

I have not played with one. Don't know if you can pull up a PlayTV pane via in-game XMB (Probably not).

PS Eye also has a PC driver. SIXAXIS has one too. PS3 uses standard PC interfaces, so it should not be a surprise to find PC drivers for these hardware.

PlayTV is HD capable right now, as long as the country broadcasts their HD on DVB-T (I've heard at least France and Australia do this, others might).

In the UK, the powers that be have elected to wait for DVB-T2 for HD broadcasting over Freeview, instead of using DVB-T now, and it's unknown whether the PlayTV hardware could support this as is, with a software update or would require a hardware update (i.e. new/additional tuner box).

It does, as clarified above. You can record a channel while watching another.

No you can't, as far as I'm aware (never tried it to be honest) - it's an app which takes ~10 seconds to load. If you set a recording and play a game, you get notifications when the recording starts and stops. Neither the game nor the recording are adversely affected in my experience.

It's a great piece of kit, my two favourite uses of it are a) exporting recordings out to external HDD, and b) watching live TV on PSP and/or setting up recordings when I'm away from home via PSP over Remote Play. It certainly beats my previous Freeview PVR (a Sagem 62xx, I think) in terms of price (even including 320Gb PS3 HDD upgrade), features and usability.

No, it's not.
But it was supposed to be.

Last November, in France, Sony declared that PlayTV was not and would never be HD compatible.
In fact, they proposed a refund to previous buyers (or a platinium game as a gift).

See the link below (Warning.. it's in French)

There's actual rumors about an update that would make it HD compatible, but honestly, seeing the rate updates are coming for the product , I don't belive it...

Depends what country your in.

My understand is that It would work fine for HD in australia, because we have shitty MPEG2 HD channels anyway.

I believe most HD broadcastings are now settopbox-conax card paired transmissions, or are heading to that direction. So it makes PlayTV hd quite obsolete for now. Most likely it takes years to have good selection of free-on-air HD channels.

You are probably right, we have a free HD-channel (test) in Sweden right now encoded in MPEG4-AVC. When I checked last night PlayTV just displayed a black image. My TV set shows it without problem.

To make PlayTV a more viable product here in Sweden they should have a slot for a subscription card just like any setup box or TV module. It would be an instant bestseller. I wonder if it is planned to come some day, maybe together with HD support?, since they´ve already translated PlayTV fully into Swedish, but are not selling it yet.

I don't know why Sony, who already have a deal with Tivo, don't utilize a "Tivo for PS3" app, a la "Life With Playstation".

The deal is several years old. It makes excellent business sense for both companies.

I personally love my Tivo. It is hands down the best piece of electronics I own, including my PS3. It does what it is supposed to, on time, without fail, every single time. Plus, they added features I never imagined they would, which has increased its value to me a hundredfold.

And so the circular discussion continues ad infinitum.

Is there at least a ballpark figure for the PS3's OS footprint? I'm assuming it's more than the 360's (which is 32 MB) is it less than 50 MB?

The last hard number we got was 43MB as of firmware 2.20. There is a rumor that it's < 35MB, but I won't trust a number until it's been officially confirmed. I also remember reading that the 360 was down to 24Mb, but I can't remember where and now I can't find that info. So it's still at 32MB for the 360?

My impression is that the PS3's OS is based on the TRON operating system, as is common with many Japanese products. If it's Hypervisor->TRON->PS3 specific bits, that could perhaps take up a fair amount of room right there.

Off the cuff hearsay from a friend, he said that Sony uses Windriver for some stuff in the PS3, his claims are based on the fact that Windriver licenses some parts from his company and Windriver told them that it could end up in the PS3 if Sony elected to enable those features.

Not saying its true or false I do not know, but that is what I have been told.

..I've been told multiple times that it's been well under 42MB for the base amount. I was last told it lies at 24MB.

the dev didn't specify if that includes the framebuffer though...

We -might- be able to tell if Guerrilla Games releases a PDF slide of their engine like Naughty Dog\Insomniac do.....

If they show all their memory uses, we just figure out the unused amount.

Told? You mean by that KZ2 video where no one else could figure out how you added everything together? Or by an actual dev? Cause all I could interpret from what Joker said was that the OS took up more space than the 360s and the lack of the 10MB edram for the framebuffer makes the situation even less desirable.

The base amount could well be 24MB. but extra features (I.E. voice chat, etc) could exceed 32mb or so. Thus "Being larger" + the 10MB of framebuffer space.

And yes, I was literally quoted by an ex-Insomniac dev who had a dev kit.

OSAlloc: 24MB

lol. why would that be? the non sports part i mean.

Perhaps that's just how new API's/SDK's/OS upgrades a doled out to different studios... on a schedule, and the last ones may the the sports developers due to their schedules (ie: not wanting to impact their release/production schedules)
