PS3 OS/Interface

LOL. You'll have to keep us updated on that exchange.

BTW, has anyone else broke the news on games running off actual PS3 consoles? If not, congratulations on breaking the story. Very cool.

Ok I'm back, and I've posted my first shot across his bow:

Well, I put up an additional, much longer post addressing Charlie's assertions in my blog, as well as a video on YouTube of me walking around the cords to verify they lead from the PS3 to something 'real.'

I have also heard some PSP users complain that overlays like this is hard to see on white background. I don't think we need to worry about this scenario because most background would be darker. White would be too glaring for a large TV screen. The icons are lit and shadowed at the same time. So it is viewable on black background (like my PSP).
On PSP, the icons are well readable on default themes, but often if you put a photogarph as a wallpaper, the icons are easily lost and hard to read if there is a lot of detail in the photo.
The sparseness also helps in usability for layman. But you could be right. They should also provide an expert UI for quick navigation. I hope they allow us to customize the UI for quick access/short cuts.
I'd guess the user profiles might allow for some sort of customizability, like arranging the icons in a different order and removing unneeded icons (like remove settings for the kids and wife etc...)
This is an issue since we will be sitting 6 feet or more away from the TV screen. I think the icons should allow magnification (like Apple's Dashboard). The problem is too fundamental/obvious to be missed.
I don't think they're too small (note I've only seen the pics), and being simple in design makes should make them easy to recognise. It might however be good if they accenuate more the icon that's been selected. In PSP it's just a slight glow and size increase to the selected icon, but because of the "cross design" it really doesn't need much else as it's virtually impossible to get lost.

You can still get lost in the media items. e.g., if there are lot's of photos/music/video files
In general, it's a plus to magnify the objects/part of the screen to improve accessibility. This is also true if wallpaper feature is turned on. In which case, I would expect the icons to enlarge, while the wallpaper size/resolution remains "as is".

The active icon is always the one on the "crossroads" or one below the main row, while there is less a direct visual cue as to what is active, you alway know where you are and where you're going.
All based on experience with PSP UI, PS3 could of course be different.

xbd, I am reading your blog...thanks a lot for posting it. There is so much to read there. Seemed like you had a good time with booth-babes. You are quite good looking too. ;)

LOL, thanks for the complement Deepak (you smooth-talker you). :)

Anyway glad you're enjoying it; truthfully there's not much written there save for my rant against Charlie; but some timely - if blurry - photos for their time, to be sure.

Hey xbd, was the Blu-ray movie quailty up the snuff? Or was it horrible?

I just want to add, Charlie is quite possibly the dumbest person to have editorial (at least in the sense that he can post whatever he wants, seemingly) access to a major website.

I don't generally like bashing people, but that man is just not very smart. It's amazing at times... it almost seems like he tries to purposely make as many mistakes per article as he can.

I hope you gave him a lashing!

Wow didn't even catch this! Sorry for response delay.

Yeah Mckmas, the Blu-ray looked great, but I mean you know it had to... high-def, top-end set, top-end receiver... honestly my attention was on the PS3 the entire time once I learned it was the one running the demo.

@Bobbler: Yeah, I don't think I pulled many punches addressing Charlie.

.

That's nice to hear. Let's hope Sony is smart enough to push Blu-ray movies on the PS3 in your local Wal-Marts, BestBuys, Circuit Cities, and Targets.

Also guys if you haven't seen it here's a video of the PS3 and it's OS/Interface in motion.

I like the picture that shows who the current user is by showing a picture a the user's face. Eyetoy needed here.
Yeah, I feel it just gives more proof that eyetoy will be available at launch, why would they have those pictures of the family if you couldnt incorporate your own via eyetoy.

I love the "redesigned" waves on the background. looks like it has way more variation..
http://the-magicbox.com/0605/menu11.jpg very small wave
http://the-magicbox.com/0605/menu9.jpg getting wider
http://the-magicbox.com/0605/menu10.jpg huge, almost like it were smoke

seems very relaxing heh

Pictures don't work :(.

Also, can't we just use the PS2 eyetoy to get user's pictures?

From the videos, it seems the "wave" is smaller and moving less and slower when in background of the UI, when in the background of the music player, the wave turns into more like a "lightshow" though it doesn't that much seem to pulsate with the music but gently waving.

I heard somewhere that they will not only allow you to take pictures for the settings using the eyetoy, but you can also let it recognise you by just standing in front of the eyetoy apparently. Not sure unfortunately where I picked this up.

Another thing I didn't see written down here yet is that the PS3 browser has button shortcuts to allow you to easily browse the internet using the controller (like on PSP). This was said by one of the Sony demo-booth ladies in one of the videos (I got it via QJ.net, but they're never the original source).

Yeah I read the sametime. Good reason to have an eyetoy if more than one person uses your PS3.

That would be sweet. Not that I think I would use user profiles unless there were major customizable settings, but I think thats pretty cool. Really reminds me of total recall, back to the future 2, or those crazy rumors of Bill Gate's house.

Imagine if you stepped in your room, your ps3 recognized who you were, and started playing music from your playlist with your pictures running in a slideshow, or turned on the last thing you were doing say if you were playing a movie before you left.

Not going to get my hopes up but I will say that idea has some real potential.
