PS3 OS/Interface

Taken from the other thread by one
# The new PS logo button is used to raise the system menu, to turn on/off PS3, and to make the system recognise the controller. It's powered by a battery charged with a USB cable from PS3 to controller. The controller can't be used for PS2.
# PS3 has a standard web browser and a media player and XMB. It can play download contents and send data to PSP as a server. For the 20GB HDD PS3, PSP is connected via USB.
# Since PS3 has Linux installed Linux programming is allowed. License fees are not required for individual developers. Licensed PS3 game developers can get SDK and technical support by SCE, on the other hand in the Linux world they don't have to pay license fee but the support is minimum. In Linux, Cell is under the hardware layer of the OS supervisor, but things inlcuding SPE are expected to be open to developers. But we don't intend to mix the PS3 as a game platform and the PS3 in the Linux world.

Any mention of whether text scales for 480p/i if that is all you have for display?
I'm sure it would, otherwise SD tv's couldnt read the menu, which would be stupid, but ofcourse the menu will probably look better on HDTV's.

Anybody have that old leaked ps3 OS shot, the one that seemed cluttered with media playing in the background and a menu in the foreground. I cant seem to find it.
Just to compare ofcourse.
here you go.....

Actually, any word on scaling at all?! How are these 720p games being delivered to SD sets? Is there a seperate scaler chip or does the dev have to do this through software?

Appreciate it, seems some obvious changes. Either they took stuff out, or will be moving the menus around. And of course no more cluttered background.
I assume that was made to show off all the things you'll be ABLE to view: websites, videos, pics, webcam-displays, etc...

And who knows, maybe you CAN clutter your display with all that shit if you really want to. That'd be fun. ;)

Surely those pics are snapped by the boy (XBD) himself?

I'm not sure, is that his photostream? I wasn't paying attention. Jim at GAF didn't claim they were his, noted they were not in fact, he just highlighted them.

edit - I see the xbd reference now, so yes, very probably :D

So, if Linux is used and SCE allows programming for PS3 that also means that user can run unsigned code? Possibility to run other web browsers, Linux based games, Open Office, emulators, ...?

Any word that PS3 would be capable of playing divx/xvid movies? If my statement is correct than this is highly likely? Or I am wrong on that?

Yes, you can blow up 1 browser screen even if multiple are opened. The pages came up pretty fast too (caching ?).

In E3, they have 7-8 rooms each one demonstrating PS3 features (e.g., Eye of Judgement, Blu-ray, OS interface, motion sensing controller, ...). The browser screen is part of the OS interface demo.

In the OS interface demo, the "User" icon, the "Game" icon and the "Friends" icon are not enabled. The demo lasts 2-3 minutes so another group of 6-8 people can squeeze into the room to see it.

Thanks for the summary patsu, very interesting. I like the idea firmware updates are going to be the norm on the ps3. I like the idea of waking up one day and haveing new unexpected features. Homebrew would be nice for emulating old snes games, but I bet sony will have a lock on that this time around. Maybe someone will find a way through the linux stuff.

Anyways, heres a summary of all the menus.

Ok, here’s a summary of what's on the OS so far:

Well I won't feel the need to post the pics here... since they're already here. :p

Anyway yeah the browser design is clean and crisp, and you can actually have multiple pages brought 'up' to the front of the screen, side by side, at once... or the 'standard' one in the fore and others in the background.

As obvious, it bares a lot in common with the PSP interface, and I know this may sound strange, but browsing through the UI is very 'soothing' with the default background sound/music and the slowly flowing 'wave' on the bottom.

I got some footage of the thing, including the browser, but like Motorstorm it's likely the case that something higher res will be made available before I get to my transflash adaptor.

It's nice though - the interface - I like it!

It has its default music in the background? Any ideas if we can play our own music in the background say, while web browsing or talking to a friend? Are the psp sounds in the OS, you know when you move to one icon to the next it makes that noise.

Thanks for the report guys.

Well, I'm watching my own footage of the demo again as we speak, and it sounds like 'waves' sort of, but now that I think about it it's hard to say whether that might not just be the dull roar of the crowd outside, LOL!

But the 'wave' moving I still do like. And I do think it was making some sort of oceanic sounds... maybe someone else who saw the demo can comment and we can reach consensus. But you should be able to have a custom song as 'standard' I imagine; I was pretty surprised honestly that you could have multiple profiles per console - maybe I shouldn't have been - but from the level of customization implied it seems like custom background imagery and/or sound would be feasible in the final release.

By the way not sure if it's been mentioned, but of the demos running in the private booths, this was the only one running off of a dev kit. It was connected to the network, which is how they got the browser build overnight.

All the other demos in the private booths were/are running off actual PS3 consoles.

Yes I like the wave effect too. Even though it's turned off, the "User" icon lists passport sized photos of each users. So I assume we can customize the UI somewhat.

What do you mean turned off? It was on when I saw the demo at least...

Even the shot I took in my photobog - blurry as it is - has the profile/photo scrolling discernable.

The demonstrator did not go into each user to show what exactly it's all about. They just showed the list of users in "this family" and moved on. The word he used was "disabled".

For others like "Video" and "Music", he browsed to some random items to play them.

When did you see the demo? I got to see the new build of it today, but you and I may be talking about different things anyway. Mine had the profile 'passport' photos associated, but we didn't actually switch profiles I don't think before going to the photo browser.

I saw it today too. May be we were in the showroom at the same time also :D

That's what I meant, we can see individual users' photos under "User" but that's it. The rest of the "User" functions were not demonstrated (so we don't know what's in it really). He didn't even give concrete examples verbally.
