Yomiuri today ran an article stating that the "CELL" microprocessor, a joint venture between Toshiba, IBM and Sony, will go into mass-production in the second half of 2005. Toshiba spent 200 billion yen this year to construct a manufacturing plant for the 65nm chip, with Sony currently considering investment also.

gameonline.jp makes a simple comparison to Sony's PlayStation 2 cycle, saying it can be estimated that the PS3 may well go on sale in Spring 2006.

And this is sooo new news right? Like there was any question that Sony and Toshiba would be mass producing Broadband Engine mid 2005.

 次世代のネット家電や家庭用ゲーム機などに幅広く利用できる最先端の半導体について、東芝、ソニー、米IBM3社が21日、世界に先駆けて量産できる見通しとなった。

 「セル(CELL)」と呼ばれる超小型演算処理装置(MPU)で、半導体の回路幅が現在の最先端の量産モデルの半分の大きさで集積度が高い「次々世代半導体」として、2005年後半にも商品化が実現する。

 現在、パソコンや携帯電話などのデジタル家電に使われている最先端の半導体は、回路線幅が130ナノ・メートル(ナノは10億分の1)となっている。

 今回、東芝など3社は、65ナノ・メートルという超微細な回路幅の半導体を量産できる技術を共同開発した。2003年から一部で試作・量産が始まっている90ナノ・メートルの次世代半導体よりさらに微細な「次々世代」となる。

 東芝は今年度から計2000億円をかけて、システムLSI(大規模集積回路)の製造拠点である大分工場(大分市)に半導体の生産ラインを建設中で、「65ナノ」をここで量産する方向だ。

 ソニーも、「(東芝・大分工場への)投資を検討している」(首脳)としており、ソニー向けの製造装置をソニーが費用を負担し、同工場で量産する方向で協議を進めている。

 新開発のセルは、現在のMPUの数倍から10倍程度の性能を持つ。デジタル多用途ディスク(DVD)レコーダーやデジタルテレビのほか、エアコンや冷蔵庫といったネット家電など、あらゆるデジタル機器やネットワーク機器に幅広い利用が見込まれる。

 ソニーでは、子会社のソニー・コンピュータエンタテインメント(SCE)の家庭用ゲーム機「プレイステーション2(PS2)」の後継機種への搭載を予定している。

 高いデータ処理能力で、ブロードバンド(高速大容量)通信で動画像の大容量データを瞬時に取り込んだり、コンピューターグラフィックス(CG)も実写並みのなめらかな画像で再現したりできるようになる見込みだ。機器間でやり取りできる情報量も大幅に向上し、映画やテレビ番組、ゲームなどをすべてインターネット上で配信できるようになると期待される。
