No "final" dev kits means no games, no games means no release.
I have not heard of final dev kits for xbox 2 either...

Just because you have not heard about them does not mean they do not exist. Did anyone hear when the xCPU taped out? Do we know what M-Systems is doing for the Xbox? Do we know what part Sis made and what parts TMC and NEC are manufacturing? What version and revion of the dev kit is MS on? There is a lot about Xbox 360 the general public knows very little about. Just because you have not heard about something does not mean it does not exist. People with vital information are under NDA.

That's probably the case. I just heard from other people on this board that they havent seen anything but alpha kits... maybe they have. *shrug*

so if PS3 is released in Japan late 2005, could we expect a 1+4 config in cell?
mabye an expensive 1x8 . I highly doubt its going to release in calander 2005 , mabye fiscal but that is still march of 2006 by sonys calander . Which will still give sony about 5 months from when the xenon launches here .

No, the Sony executive clearly targets calendar year, he's talking about holiday season of 2005.

Well if it happens the ps3 may be less powerfull than the x360 esp if it has a bluray drive and the x360 just has a dvd drive .

MS having been providing monthly updates to Dev kits from what I've read.

I just don't see why Sony would need to be in such a rush .. no matter what kind of lead ms takes, I would not be surprised at all if Sony catches up in one full holiday season (assuming supplies are available). The shorten lifecycle of the xbox console simply means that there are quite a few "new" xbox console owners, while there are a legion of ps2 console owners who have in all likelihood bought an xbox within the past year or two, and are ready for a new Sony console, but not necessarily a new xbox console. In the end, a better launch lineup would be more beneficial than a rushed inferior lineup.

If it comes out this year (which i'm skeptical about), i'm not sure it will have BlueRay. So the costs saved from that could go into a 1x8 Cell, which to me sounds much better than a PS3 with a 1x4 + Blueray.

Maybe that's why all these next-gen screenshots we've been getting haven't been overly impressive?

NP! Now that makes more sense ;) Lack of solid dev kits, moving hardware specs, early launches, too high of expectations, can all play into that.

My money is on 2007 2nd gen titles rocking though 8) Like last gen I think the first wave of titles will be cleaner and a little more detailed--but for the repetitive waves of AAA titles that really push on the machine we will have to wait. We will be lucky if more than 1 launch title for any platform is really impressive. My opinion of course...

Ok so what constitutes a dev kit upgrade?

firmware? middleware, hardware? By updates I thought the devs were talking about were hardware in terms of not seeing the final silicon CPU or the final GPU... I'm NOT in the know and never pretended to be... but I've never heard that anyone has received those final upgrades... again if they did then ... OK *shrug* :p

In a surprising twist on the next generation hardware race, a Sony representative has stated that a year 2005 release for the next generation PlayStation is a possibility. Responding to questions from Jiji news service, Sony Chief Financial Officer Takao Yuhara states, "For the year end sales season, simultaneously building up both the PlayStation Portable system in America and Europe as well as the next generation PlayStation is one option that we have."

Most industry speculation calls for a next generation PlayStation release in 2006. Sony's third party developers have backed this assumption up with a strong list of PlayStation 2 titles planned for the rest of the year and early next.

The state of the next generation PlayStation software shown at next week's E3 show should reveal if a 2005 release is a possibility for the new system, or if Yuhara's comments were designed to take some steam out of Microsoft's Xbox 360 unveiling later today.
