PS3 1080i problem fixed?

I have a friend(honestly I do) at work that is a huge PS2 fan and wants to go to a PS3. I told him about the 1080i issue and he has a CRT rear projection TV like myself.
I heard an update occured that sort of fixed the 1080i situation but didn't fix it completely. What I heard was 1080i res. is set as a higher priority than 720p,but that only matters if the game supprts 1080i and 720p .If the game supports only 720p then you still only get 480p. He doesn't want to spend $600 + for 480p.
Is this the situation as it stands now or am I missing something?

Its still the same as far as i know, apparantly there's a huge firmware update happening some time in March, maybe it'll be fixed then?

Blu Ray movies only play at 1080p, 1080i not 720p. ATM

games output at whatever res the game supports IF your TV natively supports that res. (otherwise down res to 480) so if no TV support for 720p, 720p only games will down res to 480 as you noted.

the firmware changed some settings but did not activate any kind of user scaler , the TV still needs to scale.

If someone has a tv that supports 720p and 1080i, they're golden

So basically the problem won't be fixed without a hardware revision. If it were as simple as a software update I would think Sony would have done it by now correct?

There are 2 remaining show stoppers I am aware of.
1. BRD playback on TVs that don't accept 1080p/1080i
2. Games on TVs that do not recognize 720p as a valid input.

Problem 1 with the video playback can easily be solved in SW with a firmware fix.

Problem 2 is more rare and it would require upscaling 720p content to 1080i. I expect it will not be solved with a firmware fix and you might need a new TV. And of course Sony wants consumers to go out and buy new TVs.

They were talking about upscaling SD DVD videos to 720p or 1080p in a future update. But I expect that upscaling will not take any effect games because of the video memory required. And of course, since upscaling DVD might be seen as reducing the value of BRD so there must be internal fights over when to release that patch.

Uh, do these TVs even exist? I've never seen an HD monitor or TV that could accept 720p but couldn't accept 1080i. This was really only a problem in as much as how the resolutions are prioritized. You have to enable 1080i as a supported resolution for Blu-ray, but then you don't want that to be preferred over 720p for games. I'm not sure if this has been sorted out as of the most recent firmware, but it isn't a serious problem like the lack of 1080i support in games.

I just wanted to post that I got back from a Walmart run (yay!) and personally witnessed about 6 PS3's on the shelf w/o people fighting to get one. It must have been a mirage? They were there. It was just dead calm and nobody seemed to even care that these machines were actually there, in full physicality. And the display unit was, as usual, frozen.

And in the last 24 hours NucNav and I saw the same thing at different stores.

i saw the same at a best buy on dec 23rd. I saw one guy in the sotre walking around with a PS3, his girlfriend was gonna buy it for him. I asked, "you actually found one of those?", he replied " there's a bunch of them in here at the front of the store behind a cage. There was about 15 of them. Sitting there without any sort of rush to get them.
